Robin Axelrod, Oral History Interview, 2025

    No full text
Robin Axelrod is CEO of Axelrod Coaching and Consulting and a member of the Center for Jewish Studies advisory board. A licensed social worker and established leader in the Metro-Detroit area, she became part of CJS after first hearing about it while working at the University of Michigan. Axelrod\u27s time with U of M has provided her with a unique insight to the experiences of Jewish college students, which she is able to bring forth into her work in the advisory board here. In this interview, she talks about the things that helped shape her Jewish identity, being one of the first graduates of Judaic Studies at U of M, and the opportunities CJS provides to EMU students and beyond.https://commons.emich.edu/oral_histories/1246/thumbnail.jp

A path forward: A critical race mixed-methods study of social justice teacher education

    No full text
Teacher preparation programs are being called to comprehensively engage preservice teachers (PSTs) in expansive learning about equity issues beyond one “diversity” course or superficial approach. Our interdisciplinary faculty collaborative within a Midwestern predominantly-white institution met this call by implementing a Critical Social Justice Teacher Education (CSJTE) framework, redesigning three foundational PST courses around social justice. We then conducted a critical race mixed-methods (CRMM) study to measure the impact upon PSTs’ social-justice dispositions and commitments to action in their future classrooms. The results yielded findings that were both expected and unexpected and present a path forward for critical social justice work in teacher education

Workplace violence, work-related exhaustion, and workplace cognitive failure among nurses: A cross-sectional study

    No full text
Aim To examine the relationships between nurses\u27 exposure to workplace violence and self-reports of workplace cognitive failure. Design A cross-sectional study. Methods An online questionnaire was administered in April 2023 to nurses in Michigan, US. Structural equation modelling was used to examine effects of physical and non-physical workplace violence (occupational stressors) and work efficiency and competence development (occupational protective factors) on workplace cognitive failure. Results Physical violence was a significant predictor of the action subscale of cognitive failure. There were no direct effects of non-physical violence, workplace efficiency, or competence development on any of the workplace cognitive failure dimensions. Both types of violence and efficiency had significant indirect effects on workplace cognitive failure via work-related exhaustion. Work-related exhaustion predicted significantly higher scores for workplace cognitive failure. Conclusion Workplace violence and work efficiency exhibited primarily indirect effects on workplace cognitive failure among nurses via work-related exhaustion. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care Nurses experiencing workplace violence may be at increased risk for workplace cognitive failure, especially if they are also experiencing work-related exhaustion. Workplaces that nurses perceive as more efficient can help to mitigate the effects of violence on nurses\u27 cognitive failure. Impact This study addressed the possible effects of workplace violence as well as work efficiency and competence development on nurses\u27 cognitive failure at work. Analyses revealed primarily indirect effects of workplace violence, and indirect protective effects of work efficiency, on nurses\u27 cognitive failure via work-related exhaustion. This research has implications for healthcare organizations and suggests that efforts made by healthcare workplaces to prevent violence and work-related exhaustion, and to enhance work efficiency, may help to mitigate workplace cognitive failure among nurses. Reporting Method We have followed the STROBE checklist in reporting this study. Patient or Public Contribution No Patient or public contribution

Digital forensics & artificial intelligence: Senior honors project research report

This project studied how current artificial intelligence large language models could be used to learn digital forensics and anti-forensics techniques compared to traditional search engines such as Google Search. This project aimed to answer the question “Can an ordinary person use AI to learn both anti-forensics and traditional digital forensics skills effectively and efficiently?”. The project research was divided into two distinct phases. Phase one consisted of the creation of a fictional case by acting as a layperson using the help of the Microsoft Copilot AI tool. This case consisted of a layperson “suspect” attempting to learn multiple anti-forensics techniques to obfuscate and/or delete information from their computer to impede the efforts of a potential investigation. Phase two consisted of two parts, the first of which was a person attempting to learn digital forensics techniques using the same Microsoft Copilot AI tool to undo these actions that were taken within phase one. The second part of this phase consisted of the researcher using their existing forensics knowledge to attempt to gain as much information as possible from the case that was created in phase one. After these phases were completed, the results were analyzed and compared with one another to determine the effectiveness of the AI tool compared to methodologies learned through traditional means. The results of this project showed that the Microsoft Copilot AI tool was able to provide significant legitimate information on performing both forensics and anti-forensics actions with only a few errors when using specific tools. However, some of these errors made a substantial impact on the research as they would cause laypeople to be unable to use said tools without additional knowledge they would not have. Once the project experiment was completed, ethical considerations of these tools were also discussed

The effectiveness of UN sanctions when dealing with countries of varying global influence

The United Nations is a complex and multifaceted organization that has attempted to maintain peace and security since its inception in the 1940s. As an organization, it has used many methods to varying success in order to achieve that goal, one of which is the act of sanctioning a nation. This study analyzes the effectiveness of United Nations sanctions on countries of various global influences and international ability by exploring the methods countries use to circumvent sanctions in various geopolitical contexts. It questions the effectiveness of these sanctions for maintaining peace when placed on states of greater or lesser global influence. The research analyzes sanction effectiveness through regime compliance, the ability to achieve diplomatic goals, and economic and humanitarian impact. Ultimately, this research attempts to determine the conditions under which United Nations sanctions are effective in promoting peace and stability. And argues that the effectiveness of United Nations Sanctions decreases as the global influence and strategic alliances of the targeted state increases
