Experimental evaluation of enhanced antenna switching for CFO mitigation in DoA estimation

    Get PDF
Direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation in the Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded devices is typically performed using single-RF chain systems and antenna switching using time-division multiplexing. The accuracy of the DoA estimation is reduced due to the additional phase shifts between the samples on the antenna elements caused by the carrier frequency offset (CFO). We propose to use optimized antenna switching patterns (ASPs) to mitigate the effect of CFO on accuracy in DoA estimation using a multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. We evaluated two switching methods referred to as EvenCFO-SP and Mirror-SP with simulations and confirmed the validity with measurements. Performance is analyzed and compared with a standard sequential sampling (SS) method. Uniform linear and circular array configurations are considered to evaluate the impact of the noise and the CFO value on estimation accuracy. The results show that the optimized ASPs outperform the SS method, with lower performance gain at small signal-to-noise ratios. The ASP sensitivity to the CFO value is studied, and the frequency bounds within which the optimized ASPs maintain high estimation accuracy are identified. A coarse CFO correction, effective for frequency estimation errors within the kHz range, extends the frequency bounds. Compared to a fine calibration, this reduces computational requirements, making it a viable option for embedded and IoT devices with limited hardware resources

CD74 and proteases: impact of location on immune and cellular functions

    Get PDF
Proteases represent a diverse family of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of peptide bonds, modulating numerous biological processes. Among their substrates, CD74—also known as the invariant chain—has received increased research attention due to its multifunctional roles in both innate and adaptive immunity. This review provides an overview of current knowledge on protease-mediated interactions with CD74. The protein was originally identified as a chaperone for major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) molecules. Proteolytic cleavage of CD74, most notably by cathepsin S, is essential for the release of MHC-II and the initiation of antigen presentation. However, CD74 has since emerged as a central regulator of processes extending well beyond antigen presentation. More recent findings reveal that CD74, acting as a receptor of macrophage migration inhibitory factor, also participates in signaling pathways in non-immune cells, independent of its classical chaperone function. Proteolytic processing of CD74 can trigger signaling cascades that modulate gene expression, underscoring its multifunctionality. Dysregulation of CD74 cleavage and its interaction with proteases has been linked to diverse pathological conditions, including cancer and autoimmune diseases, where aberrant protease activity disrupts CD74 function and promotes disease progression

Internationalisation at home and internationalisation of the curriculum in higher education – conceptual demarcations and implementation practice

Globalisation, internationalisation, and other dynamic factors require higher education institutions to foster the development of graduates who are well-equipped to function in a multicultural and rapidly changing world. It is crucial for higher education institutions to respond effectively to the needs of a global, multicultural environment by systematically and holistically integrating international and intercultural dimensions into their study programmes. This can be achieved through implementation of internationalisation at home and internationalisation of the curriculum. In this article, the theoretical foundations of these concepts are presented and justified, beginning with theoretical definition of the internationalisation of higher education and focusing on key aspects of this process, with a particular emphasis on the motivations for and approaches to introducing an internationalised curriculum. Concrete examples of the implementation of an internationalised curriculum are provided based on the theory of constructive alignment. The article concludes with a critical discussion on the challenges faced in the practical implementation of an internationalised curriculum

Convex geometries yielded by transit functions

Let VV be a finite nonempty set. A transit function is a map R:VtimesVrightarrow2VR:Vtimes Vrightarrow 2^V such that R(u,u)=uR(u,u)={u}, R(u,v)=R(v,u)R(u,v)=R(v,u) and uinR(u,v)uin R(u,v) holds for every u,vinVu,vin V. A set KsubseteqVKsubseteq V is RR-convex if R(u,v)subsetKR(u,v)subset K for every u,vinKu,vin K and all RR-convex subsets of VV form a convexity mathcalCRmathcal{C}_R. We consider the Minkowski-Krein-Milman property that every RR-convex set KK in a convexity mathcalCRmathcal{C}_R is the convex hull of the set of extreme points of KK from axiomatic point of view and present a characterization of it. Later we consider several well-known transit functions on graphs and present the use of the mentioned characterizations on them

A quarter of a century of specialization in medical oncology in Slovenia

Systemic therapy has been shown to improve survival in many cancer patients. The number of anticancer drugs has increased dramatically in recent decades and more than half of all cancer patients are treated with these drugs. The specificity of the disease, the specificity of the treatment, and the drugs, which often have a very narrow therapeutic window, have necessitated the development of a new specialty, medical oncology, separate from internal medicine. Since 2000, medical oncology has been recognized in Slovenia as an independent specialization separate from internal medicine. The incidence of cancer in Slovenia is increasing, and there are more and more patients who need systemic treatment and management by medical oncologists. Unfortunately, the number of oncologists is not increasing at the same rate as the number of patients, and the existing facilities are becoming inadequate
