Comparative metabolic fingerprinting of olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars under boron foliar fertilisation
Olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars often exhibit genotype-specific responses to micronutrient management. In this study, we investigated the metabolic leaf fingerprinting of three cultivars ‘Rošinjola’, ‘Leccino’, and ‘Istarska bjelica’ at two sampling periods (SP-I = 64 days after treatment (DAT) and SP-II = 118 DAT), following boron foliar fertilisation (+B = 41.62 mM B−B = 0 mM B) applied 50 days after anthesis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide such a detailed evaluation of boron-induced shifts in phenolic metabolism in olive leaves. At harvest (SP-II), all three cultivars showed higher concentrations of total identified phenolic compounds in +B plants compared with the −B controls. Notably, the concentration of verbascoside at harvest was higher in +B plants of ‘Istarska bjelica’ and ‘Leccino’, but not in ‘Rošinjola’. Oleuropein content increased in +B plants at harvest to a level higher than 4870 mg/100 g DW, irrespective of cultivar. Conversely, apigenin-7-glucoside declined from SP-I to SP-II in ‘Leccino’ regardless of treatment, whereas in ‘Istarska bjelica’, this decrease occurred only in control plants, with boron preventing the seasonal decline. These findings confirm the prolonged effect of boron foliar fertilisation on phenolic metabolism in olive leaves and highlight cultivar-specific differences in metabolic responses. Further research is needed to clarify how these metabolic shifts relate to primary plant metabolism and how they influence olive oil quality traits among cultivars grown under Croatian conditions
Reading assessment and eye movement analysis in bilateral central scotoma due to age-related macular degeneration
This study investigates reading performances and eye movements in individuals with eccentric fixation due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Overall, 17 individuals with bilateral AMD (7 malesmean age 77.47 ± 5.96 years) and 17 controls (10 malesmean age 72.18 ± 5.98 years) were assessed for reading visual acuity (VA), reading speed (Minnesota low vision reading chart in Slovene, MNREAD-SI), and near contrast sensitivity (Pelli-Robson). Microperimetry (NIDEK MP-3) was used to evaluate preferential retinal locus (PRL) location and fixation stability. Eye movements were recorded with Tobii Proglasses 2 and analyzed for reading duration, saccade amplitude, peak velocity, number of saccades, saccade duration, and fixation duration. Individuals with AMD exhibited significantly reduced reading indices (worse reading VA (p < 0.001), slower reading (p < 0.001), and lower near contrast sensitivity (p < 0.001)). Eye movement analysis revealed prolonged reading duration, longer fixation duration, and an increased number of saccades in individuals with AMD per paragraph. The number of saccades per paragraph was significantly correlated with all measured reading indices. These findings provide insights into reading adaptations in AMD. Simultaneously, the proposed approach in analyzing eye movements puts forward eye trackers as a prospective diagnostic tool in ophthalmolog
Impact of incretin-based therapy on skeletal muscle health
Skeletal muscle is the largest insulin-sensitive tissue in the human body, playing a crucial role in glucose homeostasis, body mobility and overall metabolic health. In obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), skeletal muscle undergoes structural, functional, and metabolic alterations, including reduced muscle mass, impaired contractile function, increased myosteatosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic low-grade inflammation. Incretin-based therapies such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) or dual GLP-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) RAs are highly effective treatments for T2D and obesity, producing substantial weight loss. While clinical trials suggest proportional loss of fat and lean mass when using incretin-based therapies, emerging preclinical and translational data indicate potential muscle-specific beneficial effects such as attenuation of atrophy, improved myogenesis, enhanced mitochondrial function and reduced myosteatosis. This review comprehensively summarizes the current preclinical and clinical evidence on the impact of incretin-based therapies on skeletal muscle mass, composition, metabolism, and performance, focusing on mechanistic insights from animal models and translational findings from human studies
Glacial environments are extremely sensitive to climate change and associated phenomena such as deglaciation and changes in snowfall patterns affecting the glacial mass balance globally. However, as an essential part of the Earth’s water storage, glaciers are of significant importance for the geo-biologic stability.
As documented in many locations, landslides on glaciers can trigger altered glacier responses, i.e., glacial advance or glacial surges, which is approached via a literature collection in three categories: cases, inventories, and detection. This publication presents the complexity of landslides on glaciers, statistics based on the literature collection, and a possible index stacking approach towards pattern and shape recognition.
Novi beg
This article examines a cultural reversal in the logic of escapism: whereas vir-tuality once served as a refuge from the burdens of reality, it is now increasingly experienced as the domain from which individuals seek escape. practices such as digital detoxes, offline retreats, and slow living signal more than technological fa-tigue—they reveal a deeper existential longing. Through a phenomenological lens, this article identifies the experiential qualities people seek in their retreat from vir-tual life: silence, solitude, interiority, timelessness, and non-responsiveness. These characteristics closely parallel the structure of religious experience across traditions. Rather than returning to a pre-digital world, today’s disconnection practices often reflect a search for a different mode of experience—one that resists algorithmic log-ic, commodification, and performative visibility. paradoxically, even these retreats are often documented and shared online, reproducing the very conditions from which they aim to depart. Still, this movement suggests something significant: a largely unarticulated yet widespread desire for depth, stillness, and meaning. This article argues that contemporary escapism, though secular in form, reveals an implicit re-engagement with the sacred—less as belief or doctrine, and more as a structure of experience.
