Loss of miR-378 in prostate cancer, a common regulator of KLK2 and KLK4, correlates with aggressive disease phenotype and predicts the short-term relapse of the patients
Get PDFA large number of prostate cancer (PCa) patients receive treatment without significant benefits, strengthening the need for accurate prognosis, which can be supported by the study of miRNAs. In silico specificity analysis was performed for the identification of miRNAs able to regulate KLK2 and KLK4 expression. Total RNA was extracted from prostate tissues obtained from PCa and benign prostate hyperplasia patients. Thereafter, RNA was polyadenylated and reverse transcribed to cDNA, which was used for qPCR analysis. miR-378 was predicted to target both KLK2 and KLK4 and downregulated levels detected in PCa patients (p = 0.050). The reduction of miR-378 was correlated with higher Gleason score (p = 0.018), larger diameter tumors (p = 0.034), and elevated serum PSA (p = 0.006). Regarding prognosis, miR-378 was able to improve risk stratification according to Gleason score or tumor stage, while higher risk to recur highlighted for the patients expressing lower miR-378 levels. Finally, the loss of miR-378 was able to predict the short-term relapse of ‘high’- and ‘very high’- recurrence-risk patients, independent of Gleason score, tumor stage, PSA, and age as indicated by Kaplan-Meier survival curves (p = 0.030) and multivariate Cox regression analysis (p = 0.018). In conclusion, loss of miR-378 expression increases the risk for PCa progression and relapse, despite active treatment

No full textClimate change and future ozone concentrations in high resolution over Europe
Get PDFIn this study a methodology is developed that applies the ozone concentration change signal from a global climate-chemical modeling system with a coarse horizontal resolution to a finer resolution. To this aim simulations with two different configurations of the GEOS-CHEM chemical transport model are conducted a) driven from the GISS III general circulation model (4ox 5o) for a present (1999–2001) and a future (2049–2051) period and b) driven by assimilated meteorological data (GEOS, 0.5o x 0.667o) for the year 2005. Results indicate highest increases between the future and the reference period in the north west and the south west Europe for both the average mean (~ 5 ppb) and average daily maximum ozone concentrations (~ 10 ppb) whereas the highest decreases (~ 4-6 ppb) are shown in the south East Europe for the same statistical targets. Moreover, these results are of the same sign to the results of the global climate-chemical modelling system in the North-west and the South-east Europe. Nevertheless changes in the GISS/GEOS-CHEM between the future and the present climate are in the range of ± 2 ppb and ± 3 ppb for the average mean and the average daily maximum ozone concentrations respectively

No full textΤο ανά χείρας πολυσέλιδο πόνημα αποτελεί την 1η έκθεση Αυτοαξιολόγησης του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου, που συμπίπτει με τη συμπλήρωση 30 ετών ευδόκιμης λειτουργίας του και 190 ετών από την ίδρυση της Ιονίου Ακαδημίας, της οποίας αποτελεί τον φυσικό διάδοχο. Η Ιόνιος Ακαδημία ιδρύθηκε το 1824 στην Κέρκυρα και υπήρξε το πρώτο πανεπιστημιακό ίδρυμα της νεώτερης Ελλάδος. Η Πρυτανεία που στεγάζεται στο ίδιο αυτό ιστορικό κτίριο της Ιονίου Ακαδημίας, έχει αποδυθεί στην αναδιοργάνωση και τον οικονομικό εξορθολογισμό του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου με αδιαπραγμάτευτο στόχο την ομαλή συνέχιση της λειτουργίας του Ιδρύματος στους τωρινούς χαλεπούς και απαιτητικούς καιρούς. Με γνώμονα τον στόχο αυτό, σημειώνονται ενημερωτικά τα ακόλουθα: Η αναδιοργάνωση και ο οικονομικός εξορθολογισμός του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου επιχειρήθηκε με μεγάλη περίσκεψη, μετά από μακρά και επίπονη μελέτη εκ μέρους των Πρυτανικών Αρχών και επετεύχθη αδιατάρακτα για τη λειτουργία του Ιδρύματος χωρίς να απολεσθεί ούτε μία διδακτική ώρα. Επιτελέστηκε συντονισμένη και ταχύτατη μεταστέγαση όλων των εγκατεσπαρμένων Διοικητικών Υπηρεσιών, Βιβλιοθήκης αλλά και Πανεπιστημιακών Τμημάτων - εν μέσω θερινών διακοπών - με τη βοήθεια Υπαλλήλων και μελών ΔΕΠ, που αγκάλιασαν την προσπάθειά μας θυσιάζοντας αφιλοκερδώς όλες τις καλοκαιρινές διακοπές και τις αργίες τους. Υπογραμμίζουμε ότι όλοι τους προσέφεραν για τον σκοπό αυτό εκουσίως και με ενθουσιασμό τουλάχιστον δεκάωρη καθημερινή εργασία.
