Analysis of the indoor air quality in greek primary schools
Get PDFThe exposure of children to indoor air pollutants in school classrooms might cause them adverse health effects. In order to confront this issue, the in-depth study and evaluation of the indoor air quality in classrooms is necessary. The aims of this study are to characterize the environmental factors that affect indoor air quality. Several indoor air pollutants such as the concentrations of the particulate matter (PM) of several different size ranges, carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and VOCs, were simultaneously measured in classrooms as well as the outdoor environment in nine primary schools in Athens, Greece during April 2013. Measurements were performed for more than 7 hours per day, for a period of one to five days in a classroom, per school. The first results indicate extreme PM10 concentrations in many cases with varying fluctuations throughout the day, mainly attributed to the presence of students, inadequate level of ventilation and chalk dust while the ultrafine particles (UFP) remained in rather low levels. In most of the cases the indoor concentrations exceeded the outdoor ones by more than ten times. Carbon dioxide concentrations in many cases exceeded the recommended limit value indicating inadequate levels of ventilation
Integrating Serious Games in the Educational Experience of Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Towards a Playful and Integrative Model
Get PDFThe purpose of this paper is to present a series of observations made by researchers and educators on the integration of serious games in the educational experience of users with intellectual disabilities (ID). Data were gathered from four different studies and different games were used, in order to identify a successful model of games based learning application. Moreover, results that highlight the motivational importance of playful integration towards the promotion of self determination in students with ID, will be presented. According to the authors’ findings, special education can be benefited from the successful integration of digital games in the educational scenario, creating a safe and personalized educational environment for the students, as well as a valuable motivational tool for the educator - especially when the educator takes a threefold role, able to support a hybrid model of digital and non digital play. Trying to assist the educational efforts of special education teachers, the authors will present the results of a series of case studies and applications, the role of the educator, as well as practical considerations that resulted in the sketch of a model of playful game-based learning integration

Selective and potent GVIA iPLA2 inhibitors can be used to study its role in various neurological disorders. In the current work, we explore the significance of the introduction of a substituent in previously reported potent GVIA iPLA2 inhibitors. 1,1,1,2,2-Pentafluoro-7-(4-methoxyphenyl)heptan-3-one (GK187) is the most potent and selective GVIA iPLA2 inhibitor ever reported with a XI(50) value of 0.0001, and with no significant inhibition against GIVA cPLA2 or GV sPLA2. We also compare the inhibition of two difluoromethyl ketones on GVIA iPLA2, GIVA cPLA2, and GV sPLA2

Η προτεινόμενη μέθοδος εκμεταλλεύεται την 3Δ και 2Δ πληροϕορία, ώστε με τη χρήση τοπικών περιγραϕέων μορϕής να εξαχθούν υποψήϕια σημεία ενδιαϕέροντος, που στη συνέχεια θα αναγνωρισθούν και θα ονοματισθούν ως ανατομικά ορόσημα.
In this dissertation a novel method for 3D landmark detection and pose estimation, suitable for both frontal and side 3D facial scans, is presented. The proposed method exploits 3D and 2D information by using local shape descriptors to extract candidate interest points that are subsequently identified and labeled as anatomical landmarks
Structural and phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA intergenic spacer region of Verticillium dahliae
Get PDFThe nuclear ribosomal intergenic spacer (IGS) region was structurally analyzed and exploited for molecular discrimination and phylogenetic analysis of vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) of Verticillium dahliae. A structural study of 201 available IGS sequences of the fungus was performed, and four classes of ubiquitous repetitive elements, organized in higher-order repetitive structures or composite blocks, were detected in a variable IGS subregion. This subregion was amplified from an international collection of 59 V. dahliae isolates covering all VCGs, together with nine representative V. albo-atrum and V. longisporum isolates, and sequenced. Structural and phylogenetic analyses of the sequences of this polymorphic IGS subregion were consistently informative and allowed the identification of two main lineages in V. dahliae, that is, clade I including VCGs 1A, 1B, 2A, 4B, and 3 and clade II containing VCGs 2B, 4A, and 6. Analysis of IGS sequences proved a highly suitable molecular tool for (a) rapid interspecific differentiation, (b) intraspecific discrimination among VCGs of V. dahliae, facilitating high-throughput VCG confirmation and prediction/profiling, and (c) phylogenetic analysis within and among V. dahliae VCGs
