‘You don’t know that country’: Mapping Space in Randolph Stow’s To the Islands
Get PDFIn 1959, while stationed in the Trobriand Islands as a Cadet Patrol Officer, Randolph Stow drew a mud-map in the back of his diary, coloured with red and green pastel. Titled ‘Forrest River Mission from Memory,’ it shows the layout of the Mission near Wyndham in the Kimberley, complete with rivers and tributaries, place names in two languages, a scale and a compass rose. This paper suggests that the drawing balances pride in precision of representation of the space with a sense of desire in remembering it across time and from a distance. This paper considers this act of mapping and compares it to the representations of space in Stow’s novel To the Islands (1958). It discusses the manoeuvres it highlights within Stow’s creative practice, and the tension it invokes in relation to his growing consciousness of his own settler-colonial subjectivity
What is the Impact of the Changing Distribution of Public Housing in Sydney on the Systems’ Emancipatory Potential for Vulnerable Children and Families? Social Work in the 21st Century: Critical Issues for Practice
Get PDFAs Sydney’s inner city rapidly gentrifies, so too does the long-standing egalitarian fabric of its suburbs. The New South Wales government is currently facilitating a rapid shift in the spatial distribution of its public housing stock, particularly in relation to the provision of housing for families. This paper seeks to interrogate the impact of this changing spatial distribution, with a particular focus on the emancipatory potential of the system to provide opportunities for children and families. Analysing this issue through a critical and post-structuralist lens, this paper identifies a split in the literature in which there is a discord between how public housing tenants are framed – as either an economic equation or as service users with valuable lived experience. This differential is interrogated and then grounded in the context of social work, where I explore the role social work can play in bringing equality to the debate in relation to public housing and its changing spatial distribution
European banking sector and bank lending amid COVID-19
Get PDFThe unprecedented economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic might also have a negative impact on banks. Banks in the euro area play an important role as the main source of external financing for the private sector. Hence, the negative impact of COVID-19 could translate into both deeper economic contraction and hinder banks’ ability to finance the post-pandemic economic recovery. Therefore, this study provides a review of the bank lending and banking sector situation in the first year of the pandemic. It presents changes in bank lending and conducts a descriptive analysis on the following main potential determinants of bank lending growth during the pandemic: bank lending supply and demand, public sector lending guarantee schemes and monetary policy easing. It also describes how the overall situation of the banking sector was influenced and the perspectives for the medium term. The descriptive analysis is complemented with a simple econometric analysis on the determinants of bank lending across the euro area countries
