Bodying forth linguistic excess in The Book of Dave by Will Self
Get PDFAs it introduces the body into the text through reciprocal semiotisation and somatisation of text and body, Self’s novel entitled The Book of Dave makes the reader experience language as excess: indeed, the very physical experience of reading Self’s visually and orally modified language enables the reader to perceive the importance of the work of the remainder as that of the excess in and of language. The remainder, which is to be identified with the capacity of language to play with its own rules, is indeed foregrounded in Self’s experimentations with language, which flesh out the texture and the physicality of language itself, turning the reader’s experience of the text into an encounter with an opaque, elusive, unstable Other
La Transmission inquiétée dans The Years de Virginia Woolf
Get PDFL'article s'attarde sur le dernier chapitre du roman The Years, qui constitue une véritable méditation sur la transmission, que cela soit celle de l'histoire, de la culture, ou bien plus encore de l'expérience personnelle. Le chapitre ne cesse de mettre en scène un désir de transmission de l'expérience, dont les conditions échappent au topos narratif et, toujours précaires, sont à inventer, à saisir. La transmission n'emprunte pas au paradigme de la filiation qui est mis en cause et se trouve porteur de hantise, mais à une généalogie aux nombreux échos nietzschéens de certains de ses protocoles. Le champ de la transmission se resserre alors dans la seule scène intersubjective de la remémoration qui s'écrit à plusieurs voix et fait le vif du présent. Enfin la transmission s'adresse à l'à-venir, dont elle décline dans l'expérience des personnages plusieurs variations que l'on peut lire comme autant d'interpellations de l'intempestif
