Traditionally left thinking hat its centre in equality, while right thinking stresses freedom. Here an approach of radical equality of chances is discussed. A “social-liberal” position is favoured and political consequences are drawn like strong interventions in the law of inheritance or the right to a fair share of paid labour
Die Evolution indigener Politik in Bolivien
This study examines the emergence of indigenous movements as powerful new social and political actors in Latin America. Bolivia’s indigenous movement, in particular, stands out for its mobilizational and organizational capacity in uniting diverse sectors of civil society in the struggle against neoliberalism. The study explores the evolution of indigenous movement strategies in Bolivia, beginning from the transition to democracy in the early 1980s until the presidential victory of indigenous leader Evo Morales of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party in late 2005. Special attention is paid to the rise of contemporary indigenous-based parties rooted in established social movement organizations as well as the role of the indigenous movement in the Bolivian ‘Water War’ of 2000 and the ‘Gas War’ of 2003. The study contends that the success of Bolivia’s contemporary indigenous movement is largely the result of its two-pronged strategy based on unwavering opposition in both the streets and in parliament and its capacity to combine competing class- and ethnic- based demands
In schlechter Verfassung? Ursachen und Konsequenzen der EU-Verfassungskrise
After the failed referenda in France and the Netherlands the European Union is in trouble. The integration process is confronted with a double crisis. Firstly the legitimacy of the EU in the population, particularly in lower income groups, has been weakened because of the negative social effects of neoliberal integration projects such as the Lisbon strategy. Secondly the EU is faced with a crisis of leadership. The Franco-German project of making the EU a global player in security policies that also rivals the US failed because of resistance of other European Governments

In his life-long fight the Brazilian caoutchouc worker Chico Mendes combined social and ecological claims. He successfully organised workers. In December 1988 he was murdered by order of the latifundistas
Uruguay. Ein lateinamerikanisches Modell?
A history of social struggles in Uruguay is given, from the fights against the Spaniards in early 19th century until the present time. These fights were always influenced by imperialist appropriation of the country. After the Spain has withdrawn it was at first the English Imperialism, later the US-Imperialism which forced Uruguay’s economy to serve its needs. A comprise between rival fractions of Uruguay’s ruling class brought the country a long lasting period of stability and also some social reforms. Economic crisis, increasing social protest and a brutal military regime ended this period in the early seventies. A broad coalition of the Left Frente Amplio could not only survive the military regime, it grew continuously under democratic conditions. Since 1989 Frente Amplio rules in Montevideo, capital and biggest department of the country, and in 2004, its candidate won the presidential elections, starting a new economic policy as well as a new foreign policy
Es gibt Alternativen zur ALCA: ALBA und warum der ALCA-Prozess gestoppt wurde
The Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) could not be set up in the way and time the US-Government firstly wanted. Among others, one of the main reasons was the wide spread network resistance that involved trade unions, social movements and grass roots organizations from North and South America, who worked together to pressure their governments to stop negotiations. A new space for action has emerged in the last few years with the election of left-wing Presidents in South America, converging interest of governments with demands from social movements to overcome neoliberal regional integration. A concrete alternative project against FTAA came up from the cooperation agreement between Venezuela und Cuba, but extended to other countries: The "bolivarian" Alternative for the Americas and Caribbean (ALBA) seeks to establish solidary ways of integration in Latin America
Die Notwendigkeit einer alternativen Entwicklungsstrategie: Der Ansatz von Celso Furtado
Furtado was one of the most important economic thinkers of Latin America. Together with Raul Prebisch he was the founder of Latin American Structuralism in developmental theory. In this article, Furtados approach is discussed in view for an economic model alternative to the neoliberal one. Three main points are emphasized: income distribution and its implication for the development of capitalism, the tendency increasing external debts, and the role of monetary and currency politics
Der AEG-Streik in Nürnberg: fast ein Erfolg
The AEG-strike: nearly a success. The workers of the AEG-factory in Nuremberg striked during 43 days against the delocalisation of the production to Eastern Europe. The strike was supported by an amazing regional, national and international solidarity. In the end, the union agreed to a compromise, obtaining relativly high payments of damages, but consenting in the closure of the plant. The article retraces the development of the conflict, analyses the ‘resources of solidarity’ and tries to evaluate its outcome and the underlying union strategies
Venezuelas „bolivarianischer Prozess“ Mit Gilles Deleuze in Caracas
The „Bolivarian Process“ in Venezuela is the result of a profound crisis of representation that affects the Venezuelan society since the economic crisis of the 1980s. The election of officer Hugo Chávez in 1998 has brought, through the years, an important change of government policies, but it is not identical to the radical social processes that overthrew the old system. To understand what is going on in Venezuela, it might be useful to discuss Deleuzes/Guattaris concept of rhizomes and machines. The French philosophers argued that changes (in society and elsewhere) should not be understood as “evolutions”, but as complex combinations of singularities. The Venezuelan transformation in the last years can be analyzed in this sense as a process without central leadership, representation, and subject – in spite of the overwhelming figure of president Chávez
Von Wasserwerfern und Mikrowellen: Überlegungen zu einer Typologie innovatorischen Scheiterns
Innovation failure, not success, is the norm. As such, it is of major importance for the understanding of technological change. In this paper four examples for failure will be presented. By snatching these “blots” from oblivion some typical reasons for failure shall be elucidated
