Get PDFChallenging the current poststructuralist interpretations of Foucault’s analytic of power, the article explores the materialist borrowings Foucault has taken from Althusser. Conflating domination and politics into a single term, the Foucauldian concept of power appears to be equivocal. Starting from this, it is shown how the Althusserian distinction between ideology and violence haunts the concept of discipline, how the critique of the juridical model of power leads Foucault to a positivistic command model of law, and how Foucault eschews to elaborate the collective character of political action. Finally, the article pleads for reconsidering both Foucault’s and Althusser’s approach in terms of the critical-realist debates on structure and agency

Get PDFFrom the mid 1980s onwards, successive deepening and widening of European integration has led to the emergence of a new European economy. Its mode of operation is increasingly subjected to the dynamics of global and European financial markets. This article addresses the question inasmuch financial integration has an impact on the transformation of continental European systems of production and innovation. It argues that this impact is rather negative. For, although financial integration is geared towards the US model, it is not able to capitalise on its economic advantages. On the contrary, economic indicators underline that the previous productive strength and innovative ability of continental European systems are impaired by the dominant role of securities markets

It describes the constitution of Hezbollah as a consequence of the regional and Lebanese context and points at the impossibility of disarming Hezbollah by external forces. There exist a number of unsolved issues in this contentious frontier area, i.e. the Israeli claim for the Lebanese water resources or the occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights. Get PDFOver the last decades, competitiveness has become the major driving force of European integration. The EU polity has gained significant influence in reshaping domestic policies and institutions towards a more market oriented path. The supranational constraints on nation states are reinforced by an increasing locational competition. Eastern enlargement of the EU is often said to reinforce the locational competition, and to ultimately lead the EU into a downward spiral of social and economic standards. This article proposes a more nuanced view. It shows that in contrast to the race to the bottom argument, it is not the neoliberal Baltic States that exert the strongest competitive pressure within the EU, but rather the Visegrad countries, who, with their interventionistic states and their comparatively generous welfare states, are closer to the current form of European capitalism

Get PDFIn the European Monetary Union (EMU) development of unit-labour costs and inflation rates differs substantially among regions. This shows that the different wage determination models in the EMU did not converge to create a EMU-wide coherent wage bargaining system. The result are huge regional imbalances. Germany the biggest economy and the country with the lowest increase in unit-labour costs in EMU already realises big and increasing current account surpluses against other EMU countries. Spain, Italy or Portugal suffer from big current account deficits. The financial power of the European centre is too limited to prevent increasing regional problems. What is needed in Europe is a deeper institutional and political integration to combine functional monetary, fiscal, wage and regional policies
