Kapitalistische Macht und neoliberales Regieren
Neoliberal political projects strive to discipline people according to principles of market and competition. "Governementality- studies" have contributed to a better understanding of strategies used in order to transform human beings into market actors or human capitalists. However, Foucault\u27s idea of governmentality is problematic insofar as it is based on a too narrow conception of power and freedom. Relations of power in capitalist societies cannot be analysed without taking into account the uneven distribution of power resources - mainly of economic means - and Its negative effects on the freedom of action making possible the subjection of people to the rules of competition
Antiessentialismus und Wahrheitspolitik: Marx, Foucault und die neue Wissenschaftstheorie
Discussing aspects of Marx\u27s critique of political economy and Foucault\u27s analytic of power, the text seeks to separate the reflexive stance of anti-essetialism from two positions wich are often seen as being part of it: judgmental relativism and the ,anti-depth war\u27. To recognise the historical and social relativity of knowledge does not necessarily imply the view that all theories are equally true. And to analyse social structures and dispositions as underlying conditions of events and behavior is not tantamount to a search for metaphysical parallel universes. Criticising Badiou, the paper concludes with a plea for a realist politics of truth as an alternative to either relativist or rationalist conceptions of this topic
"Endlose Transaktionen": Eine hegemonietheoretische Aneignung Foucaults und deren Nutzen für die feministische Staatstheorie
What is the use of appropriating Foucault· s studies of governmentality out of a Gramscian perspective for a feminist state theolY? In order to give an answer to this question we suggest four aspects of convergence between Gramsci\u27 s theolY of hegemony and Foucault\u27s studies of gouvernementality. In doing so, we also argue that Foucault\u27s approach to state/power can be interpreted within a materialist state theory. In a second step we discuss how these aspects can be used for a feminist materialistic approach to the state in order to explain both, how state structures are gendered and how the state governs gender and gender relations
Ein anderer Blick auf die Subprime-Krise
What is called the "subprime mortgage crisis" reflects an underlying crisis in the housing system: the inability of the market to provide adequate and affordable housing for large numbers of Americans. Household income is too low, and profit expectations by the private housing market are too high. Until today, this problem was met by government programs that tried to maintain the two causes of that inadequacy: promoting for lower-income households private home ownership, in homes supplied by the private market. Re-regulation of this market or mild answers like relief for distressed homeowners won\u27t solve the problem. A radical change is needed. At the ideological level we need an educational campaign to illuminate the limits of home "ownership" and the range of available alternatives. At the economical level public financing has to cover the gap between even regulated housing costs and ability to pay until adequate incomes are guaranteed
Das Vergessen der sechziger Jahre: Entpolitisierte Politik und Hegemonie im neuen China
After the end of the "Cultural Revolution" an increasing process of depoliticized politics took place in China combined with a state-party rigidification. This process is analyzed and some similarities and parallels to developments in Western countries are shown
Leistungspolitik als Feld "umkämpfter Arbeit"
Proceeding the assumption that the crisis of Fordism has led to a new regime of rationalisation which can be characterised by a market-oriented mode of production this article argues that the three major trends of development within the area of policies on performance - precarisation, standardisation and subjectivation - should not be seen as different or even rival interpretations of the current developments but rather as contradictory but stIll mterrelated elements of the process of "marketisation"o Therefore, a critical labour policy needs to address all of the three trends and to combine a perspective of resistance with a strategy of appropriation of the new forms of market-oriented control
Peripherer Staat oder ‘failed states’? Zur Analyse von Staatlichkeit in abhängigen Formationen am Beispiel Mexiko
How can structural aspects as well as agency be taken into consideration when analyzing states in dependent societies? The application of important critical approaches such as dependency theory and the state derivation debate as well as the mainstream discussion on failed states remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, an alternative critical approach is proposed which draws from regulation theory, gramscian ideas and the materialist state theory developed by Poulantzas. The value of such an approach is illustrated with regard to the Mexican transition towards neoliberalism and the transformation of the Mexican developmental state towards a competition state
Baby-Bataillone: Demografisches Aufmarschgebiet: Von Müttern, Kinderlosen und der „Schuld“ der Emanzipation
The present argument over the „demographical crisis“ in Germany is characterised by only women being considered as potential mothers. Childless women however are accused of selfishly pursuing their careers and are predicted to spend their remaining years alone. Thereby, the gap between those women with children and those without is reinforced. This article examines these ideological formulas, contrasts them with women’s actual attitudes (convictions) and living conditions, and finally raises the question why politically active women remain so conspicuously silent in this discussion
Neoliberale Stadtpolitik im globalen Kontext: Ein Überblick
The paper gives firstly, a summary of the literature on neoliberal urban governance of the past decade - especially on the "entrepreneurial city" - and more recent tendencies like the renewed focus on local communities. In the second part we show some important processes and phenomena of urban development in the global south - from the consequences of structural adjustment programs on the urban up to violence economies, gated communities and social urban movements - without claiming that that would encompass all of them and without the necessary distinction between different countries and localities. Finally, we open the discussion on the implications of these developments for critical urban theory and practice
