Die Aneignung der "Schwarzen Stadt": Illegalisierung, Transnationalität und migrantische Kämpfe im kosmopolitischen Raum Tel Avivs

    No full text
After the ousting of Palestinians from an ethnically segmented labour market, Israel has recruited large numbers of nonJewish labour migrants to fill the country\u27s low wage sector. As elsewhere, restrictive migration policies could not hinder migrants from staying on, organising, and collectively struggle for their rights. Within the urban space ofIsrael\u27s most cosmopolitan centre, the so-called \u27White City\u27 of Tel Aviv, they have appropriated a space with a long history of social, economic, and cultural exclusion from Israeli mainstream society, the southern \u27Black City\u27. In 2002, Israel adopted a deportation campaign of migrants who had become \u27illegals\u27. As subsequently tens of thousands of Tel Aviv\u27s residents were forced to leave the country within a short period oftime, Israel, and in particular migrants\u27 main residential area in southern Tel Aviv, became an increasingly unhomely space. In the wake of this change, migrants\u27 everyday lives in Israel were \u27transnationalised\u27, and orientations shifted towards the \u27greener pastures\u27 of Western Europe and Northern America. Within this process, Tel Aviv became one of the Mediterranean\u27s \u27border cities\u27, a transnational gateway, which the notion of\u27 global city\u27 cannot fully grasp

Warum Irak? Die Politik von Bush II

    No full text
If we look at the Iraq war in terms of the economic and geopolitical interests that drove US imperialism throughout the postwar epoch, the current adventure of the Bush administration in the middle east remains inexplicable. Instead, we have to understand the current US-foreign policy in the context of domestic class struggles and the emergence of the far right in the US

Verschiebungen im Verfassungskompromiss von den deutschen Landesverfassungen zum europäischen Reformvertrag

    No full text
Hesse was the first state in Germany after the second world war, with a new constitution. This constitution differs in many ways from the German Grundgesetz and more from the European reform treaty. The Hessian Constitution prefers a democratic control of the economy, the Grundgesetz follows a neutral concept concerning the economy which means the democratic process is in charge to define the relation of society and economy. The significant difference of the European reform treaty is its radical market oriented concept of the economy

Zwischen Wahlfreiheit und Entscheidungszwang: Zur Ökonomie des "entlastenden" Sterbens

The "Patientenverfugung" (advcance directive/living will) as well as the passive and indirect euthanasia is expected to be completely legalized in Germany. The patient\u27s "autonomy at the end of life" is a key concept in the contemporary debate. The law is expected to enable each individnal to enact the medical-assisted preterrn ending of one\u27s life - not only in case of approaching death, but also in all cases in which the patient is not able to express his or her will (e.g. vegetative state, dementia). On the one hand, normalizing the need for a living will activites social fears of becoming a "burden" to relatives or society in times of "limited resources." On the other hand it presents itself as an option to regulate and appease those fears. Such hidden links are analysed

    Die Ost-Erweiterung der EU

The recent expansion of the European Union to the Easter European countries was preceded by the 2004 Treaty of Nice through which the stronger countries retain their dominant position within the EU institutions also after the expansion. The traditional imperialist motives still play a role but the basic aim of this expansion is the enlargement of the Euro area within the context of the strife between the Euro and the dollar for international seignorage

Sozialräumliche Konflikte in der unternehmerischen Stadt: Eine Berliner Fallstudie über städtische Bewegungspolitik unter den Bedingungen von New Public Management

Entrepreneurial urban politics not only aim at up-grading a locality for interurban competition. Under the label of New Public Management, they also remodel the city administration according to economic criteria of efficency. As a result, the political arena for urban social movements is undergoing severe changes. In the case of Berlin, New Public Management reforms seem to disadvantage grassroots groups that protest the privatization of public space, and lead to a political gap between social movements and left political parlamentarians

The article critically confronts the response of German media to the revolte in the French banlieues of November 2005. It outlines differences between the living conditions and legal status of youths with migration backgrounds in France and Germany, stresses the chance that the struggle of the youngsters for respect offered to the French society and how this chance was destroyed by the repressive actions of the government. It finally argues that Germany might even miss such a chance and in its own way risks to alienate and exclude people with migration background

Governanve im Zeitalter des Terrors: Der Fall Irak

    No full text
The war in Iraq can neither be understood as a sectarian nor as a civil war, rather, it implicitly refers to internal struggles for power within the governing cliques and their opponents. The civil war artefact is presented by the occupier and the governing cliques in Iraq. The rational behind the construction is to further legitimize the occupation and the presence of an ever-increasing number of troops, on which the position of power of the governing cliques relies immensely. Rather than a civil war, what exists is a correlation of political power and economic interest between the Bush administration and the ruling cliques in Iraq in as much as both political agendas depend on the compliance of the other

Die G7/G8-Gipfel in der internationalen politischen Ökonomie: Das Beispiel Währungs- und Finanzpolitik

    Get PDF
The G7 was established as a reaction to the economical and political crises of the mid-nineteen seventies. Its further development towards a complex G7/G8-system becomes especially apparent in the example of politics of currencies and finance. The group’s possibilities to act effectively are increasingly proving to be limited; furthermore the group is not able to react adequately to criticism and protests coming from various social movements
