Die Paradoxien der eurozentrierten kolonialen Moderne

    Get PDF
Modernity cannot be separated from colonialism, we have to consider the specific colonialist mode of power, which is characterised by “rassialisation” on the one hand and a combination of all forms of exploitation under the rule of capital in order to produce commodities for the world market. Colonial modernity is in several aspects eurocentrical: providing the conditions of existence for a eurocentrical industrial capital and constituting a special horizon of meaning. The paradoxes and contradictions included in this process are analysed with focus on the history of “Latin America”

Provincialising Multiculturalism: Postkoloniale Perspektiven auf Multikulturalismus, Diversität und Emanzipation

This article builds on a postcolonial critique of contemporary discourses and politics of diversity management in Germany. It traces the colonial legacy of this form of governing migration and analyses it as a new articulation of racism. Upon critically discussing liberal theories of multiculturalism as well as concrete discourses and policies in Germany the article ends with claims to alternative academic as well as political practices that build on a postcolonial critique

Struktur, Handlung und der ideale Durchschnitt

The first part of the article argues in favor of an anti-hermeneutic strategy of reading Marx, taking into account the always shifting character of the meaning of his theory due to historical transformations generated by social struggles and the partisan and interventionist character of any Marxist theory. This has effects upon how the relation of structure and agency has to be conceptualized as a specific historical relation – very often ignored by a misled sociological reading of Marx in the tradition of Weber and Parsons. Decisive is the argument that in Marx’s theory the differentiation and opposition of structure and agency is in itself not pertinent but has to be explained in terms of historical struggles. At the centre of the argument is a reformulation of the law of value as a logic of collective practice and the important meaning of what Marx calls the “ideal average” as a subject of his theory

Extreme Rechte in der Krise – Kämpfe ums Subjekt

The success of right wing parties in Europe is closely linked to the lack of representation that went along with the neoliberal shift of the social democrats. Feelings of injustice going along with altering the trans-national mode of production, concepts of the welfare state and labour politics were taken into account by rightwing “critics” that fight globalization in fighting immigrants. The crisis and bail-out-politics enforced feelings of injustice but at the same time brought the state – and the unions – ‘back in’ e.g. in creating a ‘clash-for-clunkers’ project. That seems to have weakened right-wing parties in Germany and France presenting themselves as an authoritarian fordistic option, but at the same time strengthened racist campaigns in other countries

Vergesellschaftung und Partizipation oder: Was findet man auf der Suche nach sozialistischen Alternativen im VEB?

The article illustrates the fundamental difference between socialization and nationalization at the industrial plant in the GDR. The real "situation of the workers" did not correspond with the official image of a privileged class, workers and simple employees in the GDR were also at the bottom of the social hierarchy, Furthermore the real participation opportunities of the workers were extremely low. Actually the functlOnanes had the power within a domination structure, based on absolute party discipline and the uncontrolled authority of a central power. In such a society was no room for participation

Ökonomische und soziale Kosten von Steuersenkungen: Das Beispiel der rot-grünen Steuerreform

From 1999 to 2005 the former Red-Green government in Germany enacted a series of ambitious tax cuts that were snpposed to boost the German Economy. The article argues that these tax cuts instead of boosting the economy involved major costs. The revenue losses induced substantial expenditures cuts which reduced citizens\u27 utility from public goods and services and at the same time dampened economic activity thereby extending Germany\u27s stagnation. Additionally, they increased income disparity. In spite of these disillusioning experiences it is likely that German tax and fiscal policies are going to repeat their errors in the future

Große Krisen seit den 1930er Jahren

The Great Depression of the 1930s was a breakthrough to ‘One Big Wave’ of accumulation under US hegemony. This wave reached its crest with the stagflation crisis of the 1970s, which also saw a first challenge to US hegemony, and has reached its limits in the present crisis. Though no successor hegemon is in sight, the US has increasing difficulties to lead the world economy out of the crisis. Theoretically, the article draws on Rosa Luxemburg’s theory of capitalist accumulation. Considering the criticisms that her original theory met, a slightly modified version is presented here. From this angle, complementary processes of outward and inward expansion of capital marked the period between the 1930s and the 1970s. The following period saw a shift towards outward expansion, namely into former developmental states in the South and formerly state socialist countries in the East, and financialization. The latter is a symptom of continued limits to capital accumulation, eventually leading to financial crisis and a Great Recession in 2008/09
