Get PDFDiscourses around financial education and literacy in Germany are examined and contextualised within recent theories of financialisation as a social process. Recent campaigns for financial education can be understood as aiming at the establishment of a „Finanzbildungsbürgertum“ (financially educated middle class). This concept can contribute to an understanding of financialisation as a process that comprises social differentiation and appeals to aspirations of social distinction

Get PDFThis article traces the complexity of anti- and post-colonial answers to Fascism and Nazism by looking at debates about fascism in India. By avoiding the often employed Euro-centrist approach of a generic concept of fascism, it tries to decentralize European experience. After reconstructing those post-colonial historiographical arguments which use the term ‘fascism’, we examine the historical reception of Fascism and Nazism in the anti-colonial movement. In doing so, the article first outlines the debates about Hindutva as a Fascist ideology and subsequently analyses Indian discussions about Italy, Germany and European Fascism in the 1930ies

Get PDFThis article discusses the use of “paradox” and “ambivalence” as key terms of social theory as suggested by modernization theories instead of the dialectical term “contradiction”. It is shown that the underlying assumption of these concepts – the “paradoxical force to freedom” – is based on questionable and not thought-out premises. In contrast, the use of Hegel’s dialectical idea of freedom and Marx’s Theory of Productive Forces offers a perspective in which “paradoxes” stated by the modernization theories can be conceptualised and in which the underlying changes can be identified as a momentum of a Dialectic of Liberation. The historical basis of the “Paradoxes of Individualization” are changes in the relation of autonomy and heteronomy related to the radical change in the organisation of work

Get PDFThe article explores the relevance of postcolonial studies for critical social analysis. It introduces core themes of postcolonial studies as well as their critique as a basis for an exploration of postcolonial perspectives on resistance and transformation, feminism and globalisation. The authors demonstrate the thematic variety of postcolonial studies and the ways in which they combine investigations of material and discursive aspects in their analyses of colonial inflections in past and present power relations. Drawing on foundational anticolonial as well as current postcolonial literature, the article points out the implications of epistemological and methodological innovations/ reconceptualisations within postcolonial studies for critical social inquiry

Get PDFThe colonization of Korea by imperialist Japan between 1910 and 1945 has created a colonial consciousness that even after decolonization is still an influential factor in determining the guiding principles of Korean society and the images Koreans have from themselves. For postcolonial studies, the special issue of the colonization of Korea is that one Asian country has been colonized by another one. Even though eurocentrism has an important role in this context, because the colonizing country, Japan of the Meiji times, already was following a European model of development. An analysis of the works of authors like Lee Kwangsu, Dassuo Mitarei and the Japanese propaganda as well as of more contemporary cultural phenomena in Korea shows that reaching high levels in the process of modernization continuously is at the center of the general orientation since the times of colonization

Die (Semi-)Peripherie ins Zentrum rücken: Eine Kulturelle Politische Ökonomie der „BRIC“ und der Fall China
Get PDFA cultural political economy (CPE) approach is adopted to examine the rise of discourses about the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) economies and about their implications for power shifts in the world system. Forces such as international investment banks, economic strategists, international organizations, national governments, business media, etc. contributed in constructing and circulating ‘BRIC’ as a new economic imaginary and investment form. These involved constructions of ‘hope’ and ‘strength’ over three overlapping stages: an investor story, an investor-consumer story, and now an investorconsumer- lender story. This amalgam of discourses and practices (which are subject to continuing renegotiation in response to changing circumstances and further shifts in the balance of forces) has facilitated the gradual sedimentation and naturalization of BRIC as a potential ‘group’ and has mediated particular power shifts in the global political economy. Specifically, this (trans-)national privileging and popularization of ‘BRIC’ is contributing to the (re-)making of investment patterns and neoliberal social relations
