Die Halbierung der Bürgerlichkeit: Zur Form „neo-bürgerlicher“ Diskurse in der massenmedialen Öffentlichkeit

    Get PDF
This article discusses the diagnosis of a rising \u27neo-bourgeois\u27 movement. Three different dimensions of \u27Bürgerlichkeit\u27 can be distinguished. The first is the historical idea of \u27Bürgerlichkeit\u27 as the starting point of all social theory. The second is the empirical rise of \u27Bürgerlichkeit\u27 as a strongly loaded concept in the self-description of mass medial actors, who deny the rights of the ‘underclass’ and the merit of the welfare state. The third is the idea of \u27Bürgerlichkeit\u27 in the Marxist sense of bourgeois, which is often used by the critiques of the mentioned discourse. A constructivist analysis shows that what has been recently discussed as the rise of a neo-bourgeois movement, can be described more precisely as a mass media phenomenon which does not necessarily find its correspondence in the social structure

Von Chancen und Statuskämpfen: Klassenverhältnisse in der Erziehungsgesellschaft

The authors explore how education policies of increased individual and institutional competition affect class relations. They assume that especially the middle classes, whose strategies of social closure and social mobility are mainly based on education, react with intensified and extended private educational investments. Contrary to what the dominant political discourse suggests, this dynamic would even reinforce existing class boundaries. To substantiate their assumption, the authors analyse recent changes in the educational institutions and the employment system. Moreover, they study recent social and discursive conflicts on educational reforms and their legitimacy

Exportorientiertes Wachstum in China, Deutschland und Japan – Herausforderung oder Bestandteil der US Hegemonie?

The article compares export-led growth and world market integration in present-day China with the respective processes in Germany and Japan during the post-war boom. It is argued that the growth successes of these three countries represented or represent a challenge to US hegemony. From the 1990s until the current crisis, Germany and Japan were actually falling behind the US in terms of economic growth. China’s extremely high dependence on exports and investments makes it equally prone to sluggish world market growth that is still largely dependent on the US. If there is a challenge to US hegemony it comes from capitalism’s tendency towards stagnation that is leading to recurrent outbreaks of crisis. The overcoming of crises and US hegemony depends on political action by subordinated classes; it can’t be expected from the rise of new hegemonic powers

After having been one of the world’s most prosperous countries China fell back and into disarray in the course of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The causes of this process are mostly interior, but exacerbated by the assault of Western and Japanese imperialism. It is before this background that the present regime is to be looked upon

    Arbeitsrecht unter Druck

The article throws a critical glance at recent tendencies of development in labour law. In Germany, the Bertelsmann Foundation, part of the Bertelsmann publishing group, initiated a draft bill for a labour contract act. Under the pretext of simplifying the application of law, the proposal undermines legal standards. At the European level a number of judgements of the European Court of Justice show a new quality of neoliberal jurisdiction. The Court classified in some cases industrial action against wage dumping and national collective labour law from EU states as illegal and contradictory to the European Common Market. The current events challenge not at least European trade unions to develop counter- strategies and new concepts of collective cross- border action

Marx, Foucault und das Projekt einer Wissenssoziologie der Wirtschaftswissenschaften

The paper argues for carrying forward the project of investigation and critique of economics in the tradition of the Critique of Political Economy. It first examines Marxian and Foucauldian perspectives on economics before turning to more recent attempts in the field of Social Studies of Science (namely Mirowksi and Yonay). Various modes of critique are discussed and compared. Two of the main questions regard the problem whether the discussion of economic theories should rely on a strong concept of truth and how to discuss correlations between structural and semantic dimensions

Der Aufstieg Chinas und die neuen Kräftekonstellationen in Ostasien

In the wake of the global slump, China emerged as a major „winner” of worldwide economic and political rebalancing. The paper tries to evaluate the effects of the ascent of China with special regard to current power relations in East Asia. Although China gains in importance and has spearheaded several of the steps toward regional cooperation, there will be no far-reaching political integration under the hegemonic leadership of Beijing in the foreseeable future. In a world marked by economic turbulence, nationalist backlash and American and Japanese challenges to „Sinocentered” Asian regionalism, disintegration tendencies and rivalries will not easily come to an end

Afrika und die neuen asiatischen Wirtschaftsmächte: Entwicklungspartnerschaft oder Balgerei um Rohstoffe?

The increasing role of the emerging economies of Asia, particularly of China, has changed the economic and political environment of Africa. Data on trade, foreign investments and development cooperation indicate that Africa’s dependence on industrialised countries is decreasing. African countries prefer partnerships with China and India because these do not come with policy conditions imposing the cures of the Washington Consensus. At the same time, South-South Cooperation is a mechanism for increasing Africa’s bargaining power in global affairs. However, the current pattern of economic relations with Asia replicates the capitalist character of Africa’s trade with Europe, in which Africa exports commodities and imports manufactures. The regional diversification of economic relations and the increasing international importance of Asia open more policy space for African governments. But it depends on the capacity of African governments and civil society organisations to transfer these opportunities into development progress

"Thermodynamische Überlegungen zu Fragen der Energieerhaltung, der entropischen Dissipation durch Reibung sowie zur Wechselwirkung physikalischer Kräfte spielen im ersten Band des Kapital eine zentrale Rolle. Sie finden sich vor allem im Kapitel über Maschinerie und große Industrie, das den zentralen Teil der Marxschen Untersuchung der industriellen Entwicklung im Kapitalismus darstellt...
