Climate Movement without Class? On the Crisis of Event Politics and the Way Out of an Ecological Class Politics
No full textIn diesem Artikel argumentieren wir, dass dominante Akteure der deutschsprachigen Klimabewegung eine Strategie der Ereignispolitik verfolgen, die die herrschenden Verhältnisse nicht hinreichend adressieren kann. In einem ersten Schritt veranschaulichen wir, dass die Strategie der Ereignispolitik sich unkritisch auf den Staat bezieht, Arbeit und Klasse ausspart, daher kaum materielle Macht aufbauen kann und auch auf dem ideologischen Terrain fehlschlägt. In einem zweiten Schritt argumentieren wir, dass eine Strategie der ökologischen Klassenpolitik das Potenzial hat, Staat und Kapital ideologisch und materiell etwas entgegenzusetzen, und diskutieren ihre Probleme.In this article, we argue that dominant actors in the German-speaking climate movement are pursuing a strategy of event-politics that cannot adequately address the prevailing conditions. In a first step, we show that the strategy of event-politics refers uncritically to the state, omits labour and class, can therefore hardly build material power and also fails on the ideological terrain. In a second step, we argue that a strategy of ecological class politics has the potential to oppose the state and capital ideologically and materially and discuss its problems
A Political Economy of Socialism: Democratic Planned Economy in the Light of the Labour Time Accounting
No full textIn der PROKLA 215 wurden sowohl politische Grundsätze als auch technische Fragen wirtschaftlicher Planung diskutiert. Ansätze einer Arbeitszeitrechnung, wie sie insbesondere von der Gruppe Internationaler Kommunisten (GIK) 1930 entwickelt wurde, wurden dabei aber weitgehend außer Acht gelassen. Dabei könnte eine Theorie dezentraler und arbeitszeitbasierter Planwirtschaft auf der Grundlage selbstverwalteter Betriebe die verschiedenen Probleme demokratischer Planung sichtbar machen und zugleich prinzipielle Merkmale einer politischen Ökonomie des Sozialismus generieren.PROKLA 215 discussed both political principles and technical issues of economic planning. But the concept of labour time accounting, especially in the sense in which it was presented by the Group of International Communists (GIC) in 1930, was largely left out of consideration. A theory of decentralised and working timebased planned economy on the basis of self-managed companies could make the various problems of democratic planning visible and at the same time gain fundamental characteristics of a political economy of socialism

Getragen wird er vom radikalisierten Neoliberalismus der Tech-Milliardäre und von der »Make America Great Again«-Bewegung. Zugleich beobachten wir eine ökonomische Weltmacht, die sich ihrem Niedergang mit einer neuformierten imperialen Politik entgegenzustemmen versucht. Beides trägt auf den ersten Blick irrationale Züge, die gleichwohl einer eigenen Logik und Zielstrebigkeit folgen. Diese ist nicht auf Rückschritt aus, vielmehr auf eine Zukunft, die im Interesse einer neuen herrschenden Klasse demokratischen Interventionen entzogen sein soll.We are witnessing a political upheaval in the US that is aimed at destroying institutions and the rule of law. It is being driven by the radicalised neoliberalism of tech billionaires and the »Make America Great Again« movement. At the same time, we are observing a global economic power that is attempting to counter its decline with a newly formed imperial policy. At first glance, both seem irrational, but they nevertheless follow their own logic and determination. This is not aimed at regression, but rather at a future that is to be withdrawn from democratic intervention in the interests of a new ruling class

Jedes Wochenende pilgern weltweit Millionen von Menschen in die Stadien und auf die Plätze, um sich Fußballspiele anzuschauen. Von einem ursprünglich emanzipatorischen Arbeitersport hat sich der moderne Profifußball weit entfernt. Die globale Industrie, die sich seit den 1990er-Jahren rund um den Fußball entwickelte, steht heute für die »schlimmsten Auswüchse des ungezügelten Kapitalismus« (Correia).Football is a fascinating sociological phenomenon. No other sport captivates more people globally today. Every weekend, millions of people around the world go to stadiums and fields to watch football matches. Modern professional football has come a long way from its origins as an emancipatory working-class sport. The global industry that has developed around football since the 1990s now represents the »very embodiment of unbridled capitalism’s worst excesses« (Correia)
Essential, but Disposable: Rassification and Fragmentation Based on the Example of Austrian Parcel Logistics
No full textIn welchem Verhältnis stehen prekäre Arbeit und fragmentierte Beschäftigung zu Rassifizierung und Ungleichheiten entlang von Migration/Citizenship? Auf Basis der Debatte um racialisation of labor und Forschungen zu prekärer Beschäftigung von Migrant*innen in der Paketlogistik in Österreich zeigt sich, dass Hierarchisierungen von Beschäftigten entlang unterschiedlicher Aufenthaltsrechte und daran geknüpfter sozialer Rechte und rassifizierender Zuschreibungen als konstitutive Aspekte von Fragmentierungspolitiken betrachtet werden müssen. Es wird eine Surplus-Arbeitskraft geschaffen, die dazu dient, auch die gesicherteren Teile der (migrantischen) Arbeiter*innenschaft unter Druck zu setzen und Spaltungen und Ausbeutbarkeit zu forcieren.What is the relationship between precarious and fragmented employment and racialisation and inequalities along citizenship? Based on the debate on racialisation of labour and research on precarious employment of migrants in parcel logistics in Austria, it is argued that hierarchisations of employees along different residence rights and associated social rights as well as racialising attributions must be regarded as constitutive aspects of fragmentation policies. A surplus labour force is created that serves to put pressure on the more secure sections of the (migrant) workforce and to force divisions and exploitability
Dysfunctional for Capital: Current Debates on »Surplus Populations« in the Global Economy
No full textDie »surplus populations« des Globalen Südens rücken wieder stärker in den Blick kapitalismustheoretischer Debatten. Denn die Mehrheit der weltweiten Erwerbsbevölkerung muss ihr Überleben nach wie vor weitgehend außerhalb der im engeren Sinne kapitalistischen Produktionsweise sichern. Dabei vertrete ich in diesem Beitrag unter Bezugnahme auf jüngere Veröffentlichungen im Feld der kritischen Entwicklungstheorie die These, dass die »surplus populations« vielmehr als dysfunktional oder zumindest afunktional für das Kapital begriffen werden müssen. Ihr Überleben ist daher in hohem Maße eine Frage politischer Kräfteverhältnisse und nicht ökonomischer Funktionalität geworden.The »surplus populations« of the Global South are once again becoming the focus of debates on capitalist theory. This is because the majority of the world’s working population still has to make its living largely outside of the capitalist mode of production in the narrow sense. In this article I argue, with reference to recent publications in the field of critical development theory, that the »surplus populations« must rather be understood as dysfunctional or at least afunctional for capital. Their survival has therefore primarily become a political question rather than a question of economic functionality

No full textIm Beitrag werden die Ausprägungen von sozialstruktureller und symbolischer Marginalisierung infolge von Wohnen in prekären Quartieren untersucht. Auf Basis der Konzepte der Surplusbevölkerung sowie der territorialen Stigmatisierung werden am Beispiel von drei Immobilien der Universitätsstadt Göttingen multidimensionale Abwertungsprozesse analysiert. Neben der ohnehin deprivierten sozialen Lage der Bewohner*innen offenbaren sich Elemente einer symbolischen Surplusifizierung, die als alltagskulturelle sowie (sozial-)räumliche Erweiterung der Surplustheorie verstanden werden kann.This article examines the manifestations of socio-structural and additional symbolic marginalization as a result of living in precarious neighbourhoods. Based on the concepts of surplus population and territorial stigmatization, multidimensional devaluation processes are analysed using the example of three properties in the university city of Göttingen. In addition to an already deprived social situation of the residents, elements of a symbolic surplusification are revealed, which can be understood as an everyday cultural and (socio-)spatial extension of surplus theory
Authenticity and Capitalism: Is Football a Product of Bourgeois Society or an Anti-Capitalist Phenomenon?

Wenn von der Faszination des Fußballs gesprochen wird, bezieht sich dies fast ausschließlich auf den von Männern betriebenen Weltklassefußball der großen europäischen Profiligen. Trotz seiner bürgerlichen Herkunft wird von Fußballfans eine Authentizität im Fußball behauptet: Echte, wahre Anhänger des Sports und eines Klubs zu sein, vertrüge sich nicht mit kapitalistischen Charakteristika. Diesem Widerspruch wird in diesem Beitrag nachgegangen.Like all sports, Association Football (soccer) is a product of bourgeois society. When we depict this game’s unique global aura, we refer to the sport’s very core, its most valued global representation, performed by men in the major European professional leagues. Arguably the most important ingredient of soccer fandom is the fans’ authenticity. But this authenticity clashes with capitalist exigencies that have come to define the modern game’s very existence. It is a study of this contradiction that comprises the essence of this article

Full text linkIn dem Artikel werden die überraschenden Wahlergebnisse der Partei DIE LINKE und des Bündnisses Sahra Wagenknecht bei den Bundestagswahlen 2025 analysiert. Während bisherige Wahlanalysen primär taktische Faktoren betonen, wird im Beitrag eine strukturell-theoretische Perspektive entwickelt. Die zentrale These lautet, dass sich in der divergierenden Entwicklung beider Parteien unterschiedliche Verständnisse von Gemeinschaft und politischer Solidarität manifestieren. DIE LINKE griff erfolgreich auf das proletarische Gemeinschaftskonzept zurück, das subjektive Zugehörigkeitserfahrung mit praktischer Klassensolidarität verbindet, während das BSW mit seiner kommunitaristisch-republikanischen Gemeinschaftsidee daran scheiterte, dieses von völkischen Konzeptionen abzugrenzen.This article examines the surprising electoral outcomes of DIE LINKE and Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht in the 2025 federal elections. Whilst previous electoral analyses have primarily emphasised tactical factors, this contribution develops a structural-theoretical perspective. The central thesis argues that the divergent trajectories of both parties reflect distinct conceptions of community and political solidarity. DIE LINKE successfully drew upon the proletarian concept of community, which reconciles subjective experiences of belonging with practical class solidarity, whilst the BSW, with its communitarian-republican understanding of community, failed to distinguish this conception from right-wing ideologies
Lack of Productive Employment: Colonial Legacy and Post-Imperialist Practices

In dem Beitrag frage ich nach den ökonomischen, sozialen und politischen Gründen. Die Antwort basiert auf einem historisch-materialistischen Ansatz, der die geopolitischen Kontexte und den Stand der Produktivkräfte der frühen und der nachholenden Industrialisierung vergleicht: der lange Schatten der Kolonialzeit, das deutlich größere Produktivitätsgefälle zwischen Industrie und Landwirtschaft, das erheblich schnellere Wachstum der Erwerbsbevölkerung (medizinischer Fortschritt und engeres Migrationsventil) und weltwirtschaftliche Regeln, die ein Aufholen erschweren.More than half of the global labour force is only precariously employed – there is a lack of productive, formal employment. This article examines the economic, social and political reasons for this. The answer is based on a historical-materialist approach that compares the geopolitical contexts and the state of the productive forces of early and catch-up industrialisation: the long shadow of the colonial era, the significantly greater productivity gap between industry and agriculture, the significantly faster growth of the working population (medical progress and a narrower migration valve) and global economic rules that make catching up more difficult
