The Critique of Antidemographic Reason: Population Theory After Marx and Malthus
No full textAusgehend von der anhaltenden Polarisierung zwischen malthusianischem Pessimismus und techno-optimistischem Fortschrittsglauben analysiere ich in diesem Beitrag zentrale ideologische Konfliktlinien in der Bevölkerungstheorie. Während ökologische Warnungen vor planetaren Grenzen einem liberalen Vertrauen in die Innovationskraft wachsender Bevölkerungen gegenüberstehen, rückt die feministische Kritik die sozialen Folgen bevölkerungspolitischer Maßnahmen ins Zentrum. Zugleich bleibt in dieser Perspektive häufig die Frage nach den strukturellen Ursachen des Bevölkerungswachstums unbeantwortet. Daher plädiere ich für eine kritische Rückbesinnung auf die marxistische Malthus-Kritik, die demografische Dynamiken als Ausdruck historisch-spezifischer Produktions- und Reproduktionsverhältnisse versteht.Starting from the ongoing polarization between Malthusian pessimism and techno-optimistic faith in progress, I analyze key ideological fault lines in population theory. While ecological warnings about planetary boundaries confront a liberal belief in the innovative potential of growing populations, feminist critiques have foregrounded the social consequences of population policies. Yet this perspective often leaves the structural causes of population growth unaddressed. Therefore I call for a critical return to the Marxist critique of Malthus, which interprets demographic dynamics as expressions of historically specific relations of production and reproduction
Labour Struggle in German Seasonal Work: The Unlikely Strike at »Spargel Ritter«
No full textWir analysieren den Streik rumänischer Saisonarbeitskräfte auf dem Betrieb »Spargel Ritter« im Mai 2020 und untersuchen, warum es hier zur seltenen Anwendung von Widerstandsstrategien kam. Anhand der Trias von »Loyalty«, »Exit« und »Voice« werden die Handlungsspielräume und Hürden migrantischer Arbeiter*innen im System der deutschen Saisonarbeit rekonstruiert. Im Fall Ritter verschmolzen scheinbar gegensätzliche Strategien der Arbeitenden zu einer einzigartigen Konstellation von betrieblichem Kontrollverlust, pandemiebedingten Mobilitätsrestriktionen und zivilgesellschaftlicher Unterstützung. Mit einer rechtsgeografischen Analyse beleuchten wir dabei nicht nur die strukturellen Bedingungen migrantischer Arbeitskämpfe, sondern auch deren transformative Potenziale.We analyse the strike of Romanian seasonal workers on the »Spargel Ritter« farm near Bonn, Germany, in May 2020 and examine why resistance strategies were used as an exception in this case. The triad of »loyalty«, »exit« and »voice« is used to reconstruct the scope for action of migrant workers in the German seasonal work system. In Ritter’s case, seemingly contradictory strategies of the workers merged in a unique constellation of loss of company control, pandemic-related mobility restrictions and civil society support. The legal-geographical analysis thus sheds light not only on the structural conditions of migrant labour struggles, but also on their transformative potential

Full text linkIn dem Beitrag steht ein Segment der einheimischen Fußball-Szene im Zentrum ökonomischer Reflexionen: der Erst- und Zweitliga-Fußball der Männer. Als Ausgangspunkt wird Profifußball als Dienstleistungsproduktion – nicht als Warenproduktion – definiert. Das zugrunde liegende Geschäftsmodell beruht darauf, dass auf verschiedenen Feldern durch Rechtsetzung bzw. Rechtsprechung spezifische Bedingungen geschaffen werden, die von der Betriebsweise des »gewöhnlichen« Kapitalismus signifikant abweichen und kommerzielle Verwertbarkeit auf dem heute erreichten Niveau überhaupt erst ermöglichen. Das Liga-»Ökosystem« ist im Ergebnis eines, das Kapital aus anderen Wirtschaftssektoren absorbiert, ohne in nennenswertem Umfang selbst neues Kapital hervorzubringen.The article places one segment of the German football scene at the centre of economic reflections: men’s football of the first and second division. As a starting point, professional football is defined as service production – not commodity production. The underlying business model is based on the fact that specific conditions are created in various fields through legislation and case law that deviate significantly from the way »ordinary« capitalism operates and make commercial exploitability at the level achieved today possible at all. The league’s »ecosystem« is, in effect, one that absorbs capital from other economic sectors without generating any significant amount of new capital itself
Labour Struggles, Space, and Socio-Ecological Transformation: For an Environmental Labour Geography
Full text linkIn dem Artikel bringen wir Environmental Labour Studies und Labour Geography in einen Dialog, um daraus eine ökologische Arbeitsgeografie zu entwickeln. Wir argumentieren, dass Naturverhältnisse und die ökologische Krise widersprüchliche, durch Arbeiter*innen mit-produzierte Räume sind. Am Beispiel der Automobilindustrie schlagen wir drei Konzepte vor, um diese Arbeitsprozesse zu fassen: 1. entfremdete, räumlich situierte Stoffwechsel, 2. ökologische Arbeitsregime; und 3. Geografien des metabolischen Risses. Aus dieser Analyse heraus argumentieren wir, dass die Arbeiter*innenbewegung ihre räumlichen Strategien erneuern muss, um offensiv für eine sozial-ökologische Transformation kämpfen zu können.In this article we bring Environmental Labour Studies in dialog with Labour Geography in order to develop an Environmental Labour Geography. We argue that the social relations of nature and the ecological crisis are contradictory spaces co-produced by labour. Using the automobile industry as an example, we propose three concepts to capture these labour processes: 1. alienated, spatially situated metabolisms; 2. ecological labour regimes; and 3. geographies of the metabolic rift. Based on this analysis, we argue that the labour movement needs to renew its spatial strategies to be able to fight pro-actively for socio-ecological transformation

Insbesondere die in sich widersprüchliche Trump-Koalition ist für das Verständnis der künftigen Politik der Trump-Regierung relevant, weshalb die Positionen der die Koalition tragenden Gruppen (MAGA-Basis und führende Vertreter diverser Wirtschaftssektoren) in den Feldern Migration/Abschiebungen, Handelspolitik, Haushaltsdefizit und Staatsumbau beleuchtet werden.Starting from a post-election analysis that traces shifts in voting behavior since the 1990s in their historical context, which resulted in the two parties becoming increasingly similar in terms of demographic categories, the article focuses on the shifts in ideologies and interests of both established and emerging capital groups. As the contradictions within the Trump coalition might well shape the options of a Trump 2.0 regime, the text then discusses the positions and expectations of the components of this coalition (the MAGA basis and leaders from relevant industry sectors) in the policy fields of migration/deportations, trade and tariffs, budget deficit, and transforming the state

No full textDer Stadionbau für die Afrikameisterschaft 2027 in Kenia, Uganda und Tansania verdeutlicht die politische Ökonomie des Fußballs, in der sportliche Infrastruktur weit über ihren ursprünglichen Zweck hinausgeht. Stadien dienen als Symbole geopolitischer Macht, ökonomischer Interessen und nationaler Prestigeprojekte. Besonders Chinas »Stadiondiplomatie« macht deutlich, wie Infrastrukturprojekte Teil globaler Einflussstrategien sind. Zugleich verstärken Auflagen des afrikanischen Fußballverbandes und internationale Vermarktungslogiken den Investitionsdruck, während die sozialen Kosten, wie Verdrängung, Verschuldung und die Instandhaltungskosten der neuen Arenen, häufig von der Gesellschaft getragen werden.The construction of stadiums for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania illustrates the political economy of football, in which sporting infrastructure goes far beyond its original purpose. Stadiums serve as symbols of geopolitical power, economic interests and national prestige projects. China’s »stadium diplomacy« in particular highlights how infrastructure projects are part of global influence strategies. At the same time, requirements imposed by the African Football Confederation and international marketing logic are increasing the pressure to invest, while the social costs, such as displacement, debt and the maintenance costs of the new stadiums, are often borne by society
Existed and Exists in Germany an »Industrial Reserve Army«?
No full textDie bekannte These von Marx, die Industrialisierung führe zu einer wachsenden »industriellen Reservearmee«, wurde von ihm selbst relativiert, wenn er anmerkte, dies würde in der Realität »durch mannigfache Umstände modifiziert«. Die These wird für zwei historische Fälle diskutiert: das Deutsche Kaiserreich und die Bundesrepublik vor und nach der Deutschen Einheit. Es geht erstens um die Entwicklung des kapitalistischen Sektors mit einer Orientierung an Gewinnmaximierung und Veränderungen innerhalb des Sektors, zweitens um Selbstständige sowie kleinere und mittlere Betriebe mit einer Orientierung am »Bedarf«, also Veränderungen außerhalb von ihm.Marx’s well-known thesis that industrialization leads to a growing »industrial reserve army« was qualified by himself when he noted that in reality this would be »modified by manifold circumstances«. The thesis is discussed for two historical cases: the German Empire and the Federal Republic before and after German unification. Firstly, it is about the development of the capitalist sector with an orientation towards profit maximization and changes within the sector, and secondly about the self-employed and small and medium-sized enterprises with an orientation towards »needs«, i.e. changes outside of it
How Does the New Come into the World? On The Prefiguration of a Post-Extractive Future
Full text linkPräfigurative Politik zielt darauf ab, gesellschaftliche Alternativen im Hier und Jetzt zu erproben. Anhand der Anti-Lithium-Proteste in Extremadura, Spanien, untersucht dieser Beitrag, inwiefern präfigurative Praktiken zu einer post-extraktivistischen Transformation beitragen können. Dabei zeigen sich sowohl ihr Potenzial als auch ihre Grenzen: Während sie ein Lernraum für alternative Beziehungsweisen und post-transformatorische Subjektivitäten sind, bleibt ihr Einfluss auf institutioneller Ebene begrenzt. Die Analyse reflektiert zudem das Spannungsfeld zwischen präfigurativen und staatszentrierten Strategien anti-extraktiver Proteste.Prefigurative politics aims to experiment with societal alternatives in the here and now. Using the example of the anti-lithium protests in Extremadura, Spain, this paper examines how prefigurative practices can contribute to a post-extractivist transformation. It highlights both their potential and their limitations: while they provide a space for learning alternative relational practices and post-transformational subjectivities, their influence at the institutional level remains limited. The analysis reflects the tension between prefigurative and state-centred strategies in anti-extractive conflicts
Peripheralised, Marginalised, Absorbed: The Production and Reproduction of Rural Surplus Populations
Full text linkIn unserer Forschung zu ländlichen Peripherien setzten wir uns mit dem marxistischen Konzept der Surplusbevölkerung auseinander, um damit ein charakteristisches Element von Prozessen der Klassenbildung in den »inneren Peripherien« Ost- und Westdeutschlands zu erfassen. Als Surplusifizierung theoretisieren wir den dynamischen und räumlich kontingenten Prozess der Herstellung vermeintlich überflüssiger Bevölkerungsgruppen. Auf der Basis empirischer Forschung und eines erweiterten Begriffs von Arbeit werden drei Dimensionen dieser aktiven Produktion und Verwaltung von Surplusbevölkerungen – Peripherisierung, Marginalisierung und Einverleibung – in ihrem Zusammenhang ausgelotet.Our research on rural peripheries is engaged with the Marxist concept of »surplus population« to examine a characteristic element of class formation in the »inner peripheries« of East and West Germany. This article theorises surplusification as a dynamic and spatially contingent process of producing supposedly superfluous populations. Drawing on empirical research findings from rural poverty regions in Germany and an expanded concept of work/labour that includes the sphere of social reproduction, we exlore the interrelation of three dimensions of this active production and management of surplus populations: peripheralisation, marginalisation and incorporation
Media Conflicts about Postcolonial Studies and Antisemitism in Germany
Full text linkDie zunehmende Anerkennung postkolonialer Studien rief eine revisionistische Gegenbewegung auf konservativer Seite hervor, die bis 2019 weitgehend unbeachtet blieb. Im Zuge medialer Konflikte im Antisemitismus in den letzten Jahren bildete sich jedoch bis ins liberale und linke Lager eine Mehrheitsmeinung, die postkoloniale Studien grundsätzlich des Antisemitismus verdächtigte und kritisierte. Der Beitrag zeichnet einige dieser Konflikte in der deutschen Öffentlichkeit nach (um Achille Mbembe, den sogenannten Zweiten Historikerstreit und die Reaktionen auf den 7. Oktober 2023) und entwickelt ein Modell dreier Ansätze (entgrenzter Antisemitismusbegriff, historischer Kontext der BRD, Eurozentrismus), um diese Hegemonie zu erklären.The increasing recognition of postcolonial studies gave rise to a revisionist countermovement on the conservative side, which went largely unnoticed until 2019. In the course of media conflicts over anti-Semitism in recent years, however, a majority opinion emerged in the liberal and left-wing camps that fundamentally suspected and criticized postcolonial studies as antisemitic. The article traces some of these conflicts in the German public sphere (around Achille Mbembe, the so-called Second Historians’ Controversy and the reactions to October 7, 2023) and develops a model of three approaches (delimited concept of antisemitism, historical context of the FRG, Eurocentrism) to explain this hegemony
