Calculating Empirical Sensitivity Metrics for Computer Experiments with Constrained Input Spaces

    No full text
Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) is the process of apportioning the variation in a simulator model’s output to each of its respective inputs. There are various approaches to GSA, but Sobol’s variance-based approach is perhaps the most utilized. This approach relies on centered main effect functions to quantify the magnitude of particular inputs\u27 effects on the response\u27s variability. However, this method heavily assumes a hyper-rectangular input space, which is not always the case, as input spaces are often constrained. This poster proposes an alternative method for GSA in the case of a constrained input space

Understanding Child Sexual Abuse Prosecutorial Decisions: The Influence of Race and Victim Cooperativeness

    No full text
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is pervasive yet frequently unprosecuted. Thus, we explored predictors of CSA case prosecutorial decisions. Legal professionals (N=262) read a mock case depicting a 9-year-old who disclosed sexual abuse perpetrated by her teacher. We experimentally manipulated the CSA victim’s investigative cooperativeness (uncooperative vs. cooperative), the victim’s race (Black vs. White), and the perpetrator’s race (Black vs. White). Although there were few effects of defendant or victim race, participants less often recommended prosecution when the victim was uncooperative (vs. cooperative)—effects mediated by reduced perceived victim credibility and beliefs that jurors would be skeptical of the CSA allegations

“Socialization” of Public Healthcare in Vietnam

    No full text
Under the Doi Moi reforms by the Communist Party of Vietnam, the healthcare system shifted from full government funding to shared costs between patients and their insurance provider, which is often the national health insurance. Recently, the government has pushed for hospitals to achieve greater fiscal autonomy, reducing or ending direct subsidies for their operating expenses. These policies are based on the Socialization of Public Services Theory (SPST). This project examines the current constraints of Vietnamese public hospitals to assess the viability of full fiscal autonomy

What’s the difference between fentanyl and Facebook? Vicodin and video games? Whippits and WhatsApp? They all have the capacity to be addictive, and your kids are much more likely to experience one over the other. Addiction is an umbrella term describing the use of something in a dependent and problematic way, often referring to specific clinical afflictions such as substance abuse disorder or gambling [1]. Addictions and their symptoms derive from neurobiological changes that occur throughout the nervous system in response to a certain stimulus, such as a drug. Common behaviors associated with addiction include preoccupation with and increasing tolerance to the stimulus, loss of outside interests, inability to stop interaction with the stimulus and/or experiencing withdrawal. While suffering from addiction, individuals might lie about using and continue to use despite negative consequences [1]. All of these characteristics are linked to the aspects of addiction such as dependency and desperation. They lead to heavy interference in the daily lives and relationships of those who are addicted
