Recovery Perceptions and Techniques of Ultramarathon Runners

    Get PDF
Ultramarathons have become increasingly popular over the last few decades. Ultramarathons are run on various terrains in different climates and are extremely distressing physiologically and psychologically. Recovery is crucial to restore physiological and psychological functioning yet is underappreciated. Compared to other sports, research related to ultra-endurance is limited, and a gap in research exists on effective recovery modalities and duration for ultrarunners. This study aimed to examine ultrarunners\u27 practice and perceptions regarding recovery techniques and duration. An electronic survey designed for this study collected participants\u27 perceptions about recovery and included physiological and psychological recovery factors. A total of 159 ultrarunners participated worldwide, with 68 males and 91 females, and an average age of 45.4 years. Sleep, hydration, active recovery, and post-race nutrition were the most used recovery techniques, while alternative and contrast therapy were the least utilized. Results showed that males were less likely to use massage (p = 0.001), heat (p = 0.02), and post-race nutrition (p = 0.004). As age increased, males were less likely to use newer strategies (p \u3c 0.001), and more experienced ultrarunners were more likely to use cold water therapy (p = 0.04). The average recovery duration was 11 days, with most runners using subjective means to determine if they had recovered. Experienced older female runners took longer to recover (95%CI, 0.10, 0.69). Four themes were identified for post-race mood changes: positive emotion, negative emotion, agitation, and low motivation. Age, experience, and gender appear to influence recovery technique and duration. The results suggest an opportunity for athlete education regarding the use of recovery modalities and recovery duration

Digital Game-Based Learning Activities in Primary Grade Mathematics Achievement

    Get PDF
The research paper has gathered and analyzed research from online databases to find how digital game-based learning activities were used in mathematics and how it influences the affective domains of academic engagement, motivation, and academic self-perception. The paper aims to inform primary educators of the benefits and limitations of digital game-based activities in primary mathematics. Digital game-based learning has positively influenced students\u27 academic engagement through interaction, play, and effort, which had a positive effect on their mathematical achievement. Increased motivation felt by students when doing digital game-based activities resulted in higher mathematical achievement and an increase in learning more mathematics based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Digital game-based learning activities have also promoted students’ academic self-perception such as confidence and judgment of their ability. Drawbacks include the below-average percentage of high mathematical improvement as educators may want an activity with full confidence. Another drawback is that the rise in mathematical achievement may not be immediate. Some studies have acknowledged that students would eventually exceed their paper assessment scores if given more time to play. In conclusion, digital game-based learning activities in mathematics may increase student learning factors but remain inconsistent in learning gains. The research found in this paper will provide educators with the benefits and drawbacks of digital game-based activities in primary mathematics and allow educators to decide if this approach is right for their classroom

    Get PDF
This paper analyzed 15 primary, peer-reviewed research articles about how to integrate game-based learning in elementary mathematics to increase conceptual understanding. The purpose of this paper was to inform teachers about how to integrate digital and traditional games, including factors to enhance effective implementation, in a way that increased conceptual understanding. Key factors were gleaned from the articles that had a significant impact on the effectiveness of game-based learning. In Chapter Two, traditional and digital games were divided into two sections to analyze the benefits and drawbacks of each method. These benefits and drawbacks were compared in the Appendices to create universal factors of both traditional and digital game-based learning. These factors included educational context, key characteristics, and the teacher’s role. Research had multiple gaps within the literature that could be filled to enhance the credibility and further validate game-based learning as a viable supplemental tool to instruction in elementary mathematics

Title: A case study to explore whether and how the impact of combat war trauma resulting in moral injury by significant adult caregiver affects young children through vicarious trauma.

    No full text
Abstract This study examined how vicarious trauma can impact young children in a military family. Vicarious trauma is the effect of living with a person who was directly impacted by trauma of war combat moral injury. Moral injury is described as cognitive dissonance and a shattered moral covenant due to the violation of deeply held beliefs and values, and a breakdown of trust. Through an in-depth series of interviews with a parent of children who have experienced vicarious trauma due to combat-related physical and moral injury, findings reveal the direct negative social and emotional impacts on young children through their relationships in their home and school environments. An overview of how moral injury affected the primary caregiver is examined, along with the description of negative impacts on the young children in their daily routine. The parental perspectives reflect on the children’s personal experiences, which include discussions of frustrations, avoidance, violent physical abuse, yelling and screaming, anxiety, fearfulness, expressions of anger, and impulsive and violent actions with a non-violent intent of the young children in their daily routine, all of which appear to be a result of moral injury experienced by a primary caregiver. The discussion also examined what can be done to change the negative impacts by using strategies including love and nurturance, community resources, and networking implemented for policy change in communities for the families in need, who have experienced domestic abuse or vicarious trauma. Finally, this case study identifies emotional intelligence training along with other strategies for intervening with young children who need help with vicarious trauma, arguing that advocacy for young children is needed to strengthen their moral courage when their lives are impacted socially and emotionally by vicarious trauma

Bridging the Gaps: Listening to Early Education Leaders as Minnesota Public School Districts Work to Align their Pre-K and K-12 Systems

    Get PDF
This qualitative study employed a grounded-theory approach to examine how Minnesota public schools align their pre-K to their K-12 systems. One-time, on-line interviews with eight early education leaders probed their districts’ catalyst for aligning the systems, how they continued the work after it was initiated, what successes and challenges they encountered, and their recommendations for other districts planning to do such alignment. Data were gathered using the built-in video-recording option in Google Meet, which also created closed captions and a printed transcript of the information. The resulting data were then analyzed via ATLAS.ti using eight main categories derived from Kauerz and Coffman’s (2019) Framework for Planning, Implementing, and Evaluating P-3 Approaches. Many themes surfaced from the analysis of the data. The first being that transitioning students and families to kindergarten was an easy and natural place to start for many districts. The importance of funding and the value of state-based initiatives to stimulate district change were also clear, leadership-related themes. District leadership needs to have a vision and commitment to the work, which opens collaboration between departments. Districts experienced the most challenges in the areas of the complex funding streams of early childhood, as well as turnover of learning spaces. The overarching theme that emerged was the critical role of leadership. The results of this study suggest that the superintendent must ensure that early education is held as an integral part of an entire E-12 district

Effect of Moderate Intensity Exercise with Low Frequency on the Mental Health of Physical Therapy Professionals

    No full text
With the rising prevalence of burnout, depression, and anxiety within the healthcare setting due to COVID-19, it is prudent to investigate how exercise plays a role in healthcare workers’ mental health. Additionally, there is a significant gap in the literature when the role of exercise is applied to physical therapists. The purpose of this research project was to examine how a low frequency moderate-intensity exercise regimen would impact the mental health of physical therapy professionals. Three participants engaged in three 30-minute walks per week for eight weeks. The scores from a burnout, depression, and anxiety survey were collected pre- and post-intervention. After running a paired t-test to determine if there was a significant difference in these scores, it was determined that three 30-minute walks per week were not enough to improve the mental health of physical therapy professionals significantly. This result may be due to a small sample size. While no significant change was found, the importance of researching the mental health of healthcare professionals remains high. It can be concluded that those who seek to improve their physical and mental health should adhere to the current exercise guidelines as prescribed by governing bodies such as the American College of Sports Medicine and the World Health Organization
