Post-activation Potentiation for Firefighter Daily Preparedness
Firefighters commonly face dangers that call upon numerous energy systems to achieve fireground objectives. If firefighters could be put in a state of greater physical activation, then it may be possible to achieve better outcomes regarding speed and safety of objective completion. Post-activation potentiation (PAP) is a possible mechanism for achieving this readiness state that translates to firefighter activity. This paper is going to investigate whether a low volume, but high-power exercise routine will reduce time to completion of fireground simulating tasks such as a stair climb, charged hose line advance, and victim drag. Pre-intervention data will be collected before the firefighters are randomly divided into control and experimental group. Pre and post scores data will be analyzed. If PAP is successful at potentiating the firefighter’s neuromuscular readiness, then time to completion times should improve in the experimental group. This could have great benefits to improving firefighter performance and safety on the fireground, and future studies should examine the length of lasting effect with different PAP protocols
Evaluation of 3D Printing Technologies and 3D Printed Materials in the use of Orthotic and Prosthetic Devices
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is disrupting fabrication techniques, bringing new design possibilities with associated benefits of less waste, improved design, improved time management, and less cost. The field of Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) is investigating how 3D printing, a subset of AM, can be used for fabrication of O&P devices. Before this technology is fully accepted, it needs to go through rigorous testing to ensure the safety of the individuals using the devices and the longevity of the devices themselves to ensure long term-use as a viable option. Research needs to define which type of 3D printing technology and what printed materials practitioners can rely on.
This study will focus on three 3D printing technologies, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and Multi Jet Printing (MJP) along with multiple printable materials. These printed sockets will be identical to each other and undergo 600,000 repetitions on a Tinius Olsen machine. The sockets will be visually assessed, tested with dye to identify any defects, and brought to ultimate failure using the Tinius Olsen machine. Visual and numerical fail points will be recorded which will be compared to the ISO 10328 threshold of 4480N, identifying which 3D printing technologies and printed materials will best be suited for O&P devices. As 3D printing continues to evolve and integrate into the O&P community, this study will serve as a basis to know what 3D printing technologies and materials will keep patients safe while still serving the ultimate purpose of regaining and maintaining their mobility

Balance impairment is prevalent among the aging population. Mind-body exercises such as Tai chi, are effective in improving balance and preventing falls. The continuous fluid movements that shift weight increase muscle strength and flexibility result in improved postural control. Tai chi is a martial art that emphasizes health and well-being by having a foundation stemming from Taoism. Tai chi has a long and rich history that has helped refine the postures to what is practiced today. Research from 1993 to 2014 examined and confirmed the health benefits of Tai chi. Current research has focused on the mechanisms of action by which Tai chi improves balance, cognitive function, and mood among other factors. The Tai chi Yang 24 short form has proven to improve balance, well-being, and prevent falls. Illustrations, coaching instructions, and practice parameters are provided to ensure optimal practice. What is the Best Course of Treatment for Patients Diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
In the U.S. in 2009, “there were more than 3600 hospital discharges for spinal surgery to correct adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the total costs of which (approximately $514 million) ranked second only to appendicitis among children 10 to 17 years of age” (HCUP, 2009). In this proposed study it will analyze and record data to identify what bracing methods are best for specific spinal curves and the corresponding wear times needed for successful treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This will be done by treating patients with 4 different Spinal Technology Inc. scoliosis braces and assigning them randomly to 3 different treatment groups: no wear time, daytime, and nighttime wear schedules. While collecting the data through a temperature sensor to collect accurate wear times and taking EOS images every 6 months to check the progression of the spinal curve. This study has the ability to contribute to the O&P field by including concise data reflecting what bracing style with different wear times are most effective for patients with AIS
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIABETIC FOOT ULCERS, ORTHOTICS, QUALITY OF LIFE, AND AMPUTATION RATES
Diabetes mellitus is a growing epidemic in the United States, and the secondary complications that accompany the disease only increase the growing threat. Diabetic foot ulcers are a common occurrence for this population. Various types of orthotic intervention exist to help these patients and prevent further ulceration. Although a common treatment, little research exists that provides statistical data to back up these treatments for preventing future ulceration and even amputation. This study aims to follow 200 patients over a 5-year period in order to gain insight on how custom and prefabricated inserts, both a common application, affect the ulceration and amputation rate long-term
Functional Outcomes of the Graduated Length Prosthetic Protocol for Bilateral Transfemoral Amputee Prosthetic Rehabilitation
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the functional outcomes of the Graduated Length Prosthetic Protocol (GLPP) in individuals with bilateral transfemoral amputations. The GLPP is a rehabilitation program designed to facilitate a successful transition to full-length prostheses, enhance independence, and improve functional outcomes for bilateral transfemoral amputees. This study utilized a prospective design to assess the effectiveness of the GLPP compared to traditional rehabilitation strategies.
Literature was reviewed to determine the current limitations in research regarding bilateral transfemoral amputee prosthetic rehabilitation. The Concordia University St. Paul online library was utilized to obtain access to current published research. Studies included in the literature review were peer-reviewed and included case studies, survey-based studies, and gait comparisons between full-length and shortened bilateral transfemoral prosthesis users. Review of the available literature suggests that the use of shortened prostheses is an integral step in prosthetic rehabilitation for bilateral transfemoral amputees, however, further research needs to be conducted on the functional outcomes between those that do no begin their rehabilitation with shortened prostheses and how individuals functionally progress through a rehabilitation program such as the GLPP.
The results of this study will contribute to the understanding of the functional outcomes of the GLPP. By comparing the GLPP group to the control group, the study aimed to determine whether the GLPP leads to improved functional outcomes in terms of mobility, balance, and ADLs. The findings will provide valuable insights for rehabilitation professionals and contribute to the development of evidence-based rehabilitation guidelines for individuals with bilateral transfemoral amputations

Effects of RSPs Biomechanical Variables on Running Economy and How Optimal Settings Compare to Non-Amputee Athletes
Lower limb amputee athletes use carbon fiber running specific prostheses (RSP) to run. RSP stiffness, height, and alignment can be adjusted on an individual level to optimize the athlete’s running economy. With the advancement of RSPs, the question arises whether RSPs provide an economical advantage compared to than biological legs. Data suggests that RSPs do not fully replicate biological legs and their function. Rather, RSP stiffness improves a runner’s running economy to effectively store and return energy similar to a spring to propel the runner forward. Transtibial and transfemoral amputees must exert more energy and stimulate upper leg and core muscles to run an equivalent speed of an elite runner (Mengelkoch, Kahle, & Highsmith, 2016). Although social media usage is at an all time high, the tools and technologies that provide security and protection can be compromised. Users of social media platforms should be made aware of the risks and pitfalls of these applications. Our study identified that users of social media platforms are generally aware of insecurities within the platforms. The researchers determined that the frequency of posting does not cause risks for privacy concerns. Although the users had general awareness and concern, they were heightened after additional information was provided to them in regards to social media security and how personal data is collected and used on social media platforms
