Exploring the Mental Health Impact of Incidents of Mass Violence on First Responders
Get PDFThe mental health impacts first responders face due to work-related stress can be extensive and severe. These impacts are understudied and often simply not considered. First responders, while trained to perform superhuman acts, are simply human beings who are not impervious to feeling the effects of the extraordinary events they are called to witness and partake in. Common mental health impacts can include sleep disorders, substance disorders, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and suicidal ideation. First responders are deserving of more time, attention, and study by great researchers who are willing to better understand associated risk factors, the severity of negative mental health cognitions, and most importantly resilience factors that can proactively be put into place. Furthermore, the prevalence of Incidents of Mass Violence such as mass shootings, warrants an additional look into the impacts of such events. This paper discussed historical incidents, both in America and in other countries, and the known mental health impacts first responders endured. This paper also provided insight into where opportunities of growth exist to better equip first responders for the incidents yet to come.

H.H. Holmes: One of America\u27s First Recorded Serial Murderers
Get PDFHerman Webster Mudgett, aka Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, is one of America’s first noted serial murderers. He killed at least 27 women during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition (e.g., World’s Fair) in Chicago. In addition to murder, Holmes enjoyed performing extreme forms of torture and mutilation on those he lured into traps. He is perhaps best known for what would later be dubbed the Murder Castle, a two-story maze designed by Holmes with numerous trap doors, hidden passages, and torture chambers. Many researchers have been fascinated with peering behind the façade that Dr. Holmes contrived and looking into his formative years for clues to what might have led to his later atrocities. FASD and Art Therapy: An Exploratory Review
Get PDFThe purpose of this paper is to review art therapy (AT) and its effectiveness as a treatment approach for individuals diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). In 2008, Gerteisen explored the use of AT as a viable intervention model for individuals affected by FASD. This paper identifies applicable therapeutic AT approaches identified by Gerteisen’s research. The literature review offers a comprehensive overview of FASD and comorbid diagnoses. Finally, this paper presents future research considerations for the use of AT as a successful treatment modality for FASD in all settings
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): A Call on Educators to Become Informed
Get PDFResulting from prenatal alcohol exposure, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is characterized by a range of cognitive, social, and adaptive impairments. Although the effects of FASD vary in range and severity, students with FASD often offer unique challenges and dilemmas to teachers and parents alike. These difficulties may include unusual learning and behavior patterns, requiring specialized assessment and individualized educational planning with a collaborative focus. Educators could benefit from advanced training in early intervention strategies for accommodating instruction to support students with FASD. Despite the fact that students with FASD usually do not outgrow the disorder, early diagnosis along with intensive and appropriate intervention can make an enormous difference in the child’s life
Implementing Evidence-based Curricula and Professional Development to Improve Student Reading
Get PDFThis paper examined research on equitable reading curricula and reading professional development to improve students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade reading scores and levels taken from NAEP. The research analyzed were qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods. These research studies shared school interventions, reading data points, curricula being analyzed, phonemic awareness importance, and The Science of Reading implementation. The curricula, professional development, and evidence-based instruction work together to increase student phonemic awareness and reading abilities for all students on an equitable level. The three themes within the paper are phonemic awareness, professional development, curriculum and standards. The research suggested the importance of evidence-based reading strategies and curricula to improve student reading abilities and scores. Teacher and administrator professional development was supported by data to improve the instruction of reading to students. Professional development investigated were LETRS. The curriculum and standards investigated were McGraw Hill, Orton-Gillingham, Core5, Corrective Reading, and Common Core Standards. Phonemic awareness importance was investigated through student reading fluency and comprehension. Professional development, curriculum, and phonemic awareness research support the evidence-based Science of Reading to increase the closing of the student achievement gap
