Also in this image is Paula Stuart Warren\u27s father, the family dog (Barney, a St. Bernard), and a Cottonwood tree on the corner of her house\u27s lot. The Cottonwood tree was where Paula would sit and read or play dolls with a neighbor who lived two doors to the right. Paula\u27s dad threatened to cut down the tree because Paula was allergic to it, but she wouldn\u27t let him. The city finally cut it down during the 2010\u27s. Physiological adaptations in untrained adolescent athletes participating in concurrent training programs
The present study experimentally investigated the effect of the order of exercise in concurrent training programs and the role contrasting order plays in the development of physiological adaptations in untrained adolescent athletes. Male and female participants (n = 43) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups to test the hypothesis. We hypothesized that performing resistance training (RT) prior to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) would significantly and simultaneously improve strength and endurance measures versus HIIT before RT in the study\u27s target population. With the exception of deadlift performance in female athletes, the null hypothesis was satisfied for all testing metrics, proving no significant differences between experimental groups. Male athletes demonstrated improvements in all measures of strength and endurance when participating in HIIT before RT. In both sexes, HIIT prior to RT demonstrated a more favorable response for the development of cardiovascular adaptations. Though untrained adolescents were the focus for investigation, this experiment adds to the concurrent training body of literature and reveals insights to potential interference effects (exercise order) and the role gender plays in determining summative strength and endurance measures following training. These findings challenge existing theories in adult populations and warrant further investigation through longer duration experimental trials
3D Printed Prosthetic Sockets as an Alternative to Conventional Sockets
Traditional prosthetic fabrication is onerous, requiring substantial time, skill, and money. Three- dimensional (3D) printing offers a potential solution by reducing the need for skilled individuals to produce transtibial sockets that meet industry standards while also reducing costs. This study examined the strength and cost-effectiveness of 3D printed transtibial sockets fabricated from two different printing filaments. Particularly in underdeveloped nations, limited access to prosthetic care is pervasive and characterized by poverty, high unemployment, and low income. The research assessed 3D printing as an alternative to traditional fabrication methods, to provide a cost-effective solution to these countries. The hypothesis speculated that 3D printed ABS sockets were strong enough to pass ISO safety testing and the material cost of fabrication were cheaper than traditional methods
Assessment of Mental Health Factors After Amputation
This proposed study sought to gather an understanding of how an individual’s mental health varies over time following major limb amputation. Through a comprehensive questionnaire-based approach, this proposed study investigated the variables that influenced the mental health of individuals through the post-amputation and rehabilitation periods. With a set schedule of administration of a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale derivative questionnaire, researchers gathered an understanding at different time points within the rehabilitation process and the correlative perceived mental health of these new amputees. Alongside categorical variables such as sex, age, level of amputation, and cause of amputation, the intersection of time and mental health has been gathered from new amputees. Statistical analysis of the information gathered will be compiled and conducted to gain a better understanding of the relationship between variables and other findings. The findings of this proposed study hold implications for enhancing mental health care for future amputees as a more standardized approach can be formulated to fit each individual. With the lens of a more holistic approach, this proposed study looked at how each variable of amputation, rehabilitation, and mental health all combine and allow for all areas of psychological and physical care for new amputees
Athletic Funding Disparities Between Urban and Rural School Districts
While there have been many studies done on education finance, most of these studies have examined school finance through the lens of educational services and very few have been directed toward athletic funding (Burke, 1999). With nearly forty percent of states showing substantial variation in the distribution of educational resources the possibility for disparity in athletic funding between urban and rural school districts specifically is quite possible and is an aspect of public education that needs to be explored (Burke, 1999). Given the relationship between athletic participation, behavioral development, and academic performance, equalizing access and opportunities through adequate funding is an aspect of public education that needs to be addressed. Wisconsin’s funding structure which caps how much state funding schools can receive, puts schools in districts that generate less tax revenue at a distinct disadvantage. This study will shine a light on economic disparities through school financial reports in an attempt to level the playing field for high school aged athletes looking to experience the benefits of being a member of an athletic team
Perceived Socket Comfort, Suspension, And Gait Abilities In Transtibial Amputees Using Hybrid Gel Liners Compared to Gel and Silicone Liners
Prosthetic liners have revolutionized the way prostheses fit, function, and support the functional needs of persons with amputations. This study seeks to examine the impact of traditional thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) gel, hybrid gel, and silicone-based liners on K3 individuals with transtibial amputation, exploring how various material interfaces are perceived by the participants. Currently, there is insufficient research in the field to determine the user’s experience between different transtibial liners. The objective of the research was to assess the perceived comfort level of the socket, functional gait abilities, and suspension as it relates to socket control on the residual limb, as well as the liner/skin interface, in participants who switched from using a hybrid gel liner to a classic (TPE) gel liner and a silicone liner. Outcomes from participants were collected through self-reported measures after the fitting and gait trials. Participants completed a questionnaire with 15 questions in a 5-point Likert scale format for each liner used in the trial. After concluding all three testing trials, patients were asked to complete an open-ended reflection question, allowing them to expand on their personal feedback regarding the different liner interfaces. These questionnaires were completed by participants during the single-blind trials of both the gel and silicone liner following testing trials. Predicted outcomes from the study include better scores across comfort, suspension, and gait ability with Hybrid gel liners
