Incidence of Physical Activity and Academic Achievement in Virtual Learning Students
Get PDFThe research assessed whether the incidence of physical activity was correlated with academic achievement. The population of participants included 43 students enrolled in virtual schooling. Academic achievement data was collected from participants’ virtual science/biology class, including their final semester 1 grade. Incidence of physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) created by Kowalski et al. (2004). The PAQ-A was adapted to a Google Form, and physical activity summary scores were extracted and organized on Google Sheets for data analysis. Physical activity summary scores and student achievement data were inserted into a Pearson Correlation Coefficient Calculator. Results from the calculator indicated no significant association between the incidence of physical activity and academic achievement (Pearson Correlation Coefficient Calculator, 2024). While no significant association was found, various limitations were discussed as possible influential factors for the study’s results. The next steps for research should include a broader discussion amongst virtual and in-person public schools and school districts regarding levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior amongst adolescent students and how these factors may play a prominent role in student achievement
Olympic Runners vs Trans-tibial Paralympic Runners: Gait Differences and How to Improve Trans-tibial Gait
No full textThe popularity of the Paralympic games raised many questions about how well athletes with amputations can perform. The proposed study aimed to determine if there are optimal limb angles that athletes with trans-tibial amputations could utilize to better their performance. 30 professional athletes, 15 with transtibial amputations and 15 with no amputations, ran on a treadmill while wearing reflective markers in a motion analysis laboratory. The testers analyzed the non-amputee and amputee hip and knee flexion angles and found the optimal limb angles for optimal performance from the non-amputee sprinters. The non-amputees performed an initial gait analysis to receive the initial baseline, while the amputees performed an initial gait analysis to determine where they were at. The amputees then trained with the optimal limb angles and implemented these, through a training regimen, for a second gait analysis. The study showed that with the newly implemented joint angles, the amputee runners showed an improved time on their treadmill. The results show that with these implemented joint angles and improved times, Paralympic athletes could improve their overall performance in their respective games

Get PDFThis dissertation evaluates the effectiveness of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within undergraduate Kinesiology programs and their impact on students\u27 career readiness. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from student surveys with qualitative open-ended probes to explore perceptions and attitudes towards DEI initiatives. Findings reveal that while students recognize the importance of DEI in educational settings, there is a discrepancy between the perceived implementation of these initiatives and their effectiveness in preparing students for diverse workplaces. The research highlights the need for more integrated and practical DEI strategies in Kinesiology curricula to enhance student preparedness for the increasingly diverse health sector. The study contributes to the understanding of how DEI initiatives are perceived in academic settings and suggests pathways for curriculum development to better align educational outcomes with the demands of a diverse professional landscape
Influence of solid ankle foot orthoses on plantar pressure mapping in pediatric patients with hindfoot equinovarus
No full textIn the realm of orthotic intervention for the pediatric population, there are varying opinions on when to brace or not to brace, and every diagnosis presents its own complication to the discussion. This study provided vital statistical data pertaining to pediatric patients afflicted with hindfoot equinovarus deformity, by identifying levels of improvement to functional mobility and positional correction of the calcaneus brought about by treatment with a solid ankle foot orthosis. Although no resolute answer exists to whether a solid ankle foot orthosis (AFO) should always be used in the case of hindfoot equinovarus presentation in pediatric patients, the level of correction achieved and benefits in functional mobility brought forth after treatment with the device suggests that providers ought to heavily consider this type of orthotic treatment for their patients
Student Achievement Through Project-Based Learning
Get PDFThis literature review investigated the effects project-based learning has on student achievement, with the objective of determining its value from an educational leader’s perspective. A comprehensive literature review of qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, and meta-analysis studies were conducted to provide an understanding of project-based learning’s impact. Three themes were identified: student achievement, student behavior, and the teacher’s role. Findings suggested project-based learning can significantly enhance student achievement by promoting critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and supporting a deeper understanding of subject matter. In terms of student behavior, it was found project-based learning can increase engagement, motivation, and collaboration among students. The teacher served an important role in which there needed to be a required shift from traditional instructional methods to student-centered learning. The teacher acted as a guide throughout the project-based learning experience. This transition posed challenges but proved to be critical in the successful implementation of project-based learning. Overall, the evidence indicated project-based learning is a valuable educational strategy that can lead to substantial improvements in student achievement, justifying its implementation from an educational leadership perspective

PROFESSIONAL SPORT EXPERIENCE – MINNESOTA TWINS
No full textOver the course of the last eight weeks, I was enrolled in the professional sport experience with the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We attended class sessions every Monday, where we had the opportunity to connect with guest speakers and ask questions. Throughout the eight weeks, we heard from twenty different staff members and picked their brains about their responsibilities and backgrounds. Outside of class sessions, students had the opportunity to shadow experiences and have special sit-downs with specific departments. These experiences included shadowing guest services, working with security, sitting down with the entire Target Field Events team, helping to guide ballpark tours, and much more. I was optimistic I would be able to make long-lasting connections with different staff members, as well as improve my skills in adaptability, active listening, and self-confidence. As a result of this program, I am still leaning towards a career within the events and hospitality side of sports, as I love the idea of creating long-lasting memories while providing exceptional service. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have had the opportunity to be a part of this professional sport experience and form lasting connections with many individuals at the Minnesota Twins and Target Field
Assessing the Use of Online Credit Recovery for Economically Disadvantaged Students
Get PDFAs online learning grows, many school districts have turned to online credit recovery (OCR) courses to allow students to retake previously failed courses and earn credit toward graduation. Research is relatively new in this area, and results from different studies contradict each other regarding the effectiveness of OCR programs. Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds represent a large percentage of those enrolled in OCR courses. Questions have arisen regarding whether OCR may contribute to a widening gap in achievement between advantaged and disadvantaged students. Results showed that OCR courses have the potential to help older high school students attain credit faster than traditional face-to-face credit recovery programs but often come at the expense of worse performance in college and lower workplace earnings. OCR courses in which instructors played a more active role in the classroom led to greater student academic success
Eliminating Barriers for English Language Learners in Gifted and Talented Programs in the U.S.
Get PDFThis paper investigated the underrepresentation of English Language Learners (ELLs) in Gifted and Talented (GT) Programs in K-5 settings across U.S. states. Nationally, only 1.5% of ELLs are enrolled in GT programs, with several states below that average (OELA, 2021). Schools often rely on achievement tests as a basis for recommending students for GT programs, usually during 2nd grade (Coronado & Lewis, 2017). However, several factors, including the fairness of evaluation tools used, may preclude or exclude a student from being considered for GT programs. Other factors include what definitions and guidelines were used to determine giftedness, specifically those whose first language is not English. Other factors include the demographics of states, their resources for ELLs, and whether they follow local or national guidelines for recommending GT services. According to Arundel (2021) finding equitable identification practices using multiple data points (MDPs) and using differentiation in instruction and assessment can help shift the underrepresentation of ELLs in GT programs at the elementary level and even benefit the retention of English Language Learners in these programs
Interfamilial Childhood Sexual Abuse
Get PDFThe purpose and intent of this capstone project is to spread light onto the very important, and often very taboo, topic of interfamilial childhood sexual abuse. This research aims to cover all bases of interfamilial childhood sexual abuse from the why’s, to the aftermath and care of the victims. The overall goal of addressing the issue of childhood sexual abuse within the family unit would be prevention of its occurrence. To prevent this from continuing to happen to so many children, there needs to be a full understanding of the entire situation from beginning to end. We need to look at childhood sexual abuse within the home as a cycle in the same way that we look at domestic violence as a potential cycle. If we can address the issue from the root cause, we can help to at the very least support the families trying to work through this insurmountable trauma. By addressing all aspects of interfamilial childhood sexual abuse, we can work from a multidisciplinary and trauma informed approach to best support the survivors of said abuse.
