THE EFFECTS OF EARLY INTERVENTION OF ORTHOTIC BRACING IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH CEREBRAL PALSY

    No full text
Early intervention of orthotic bracing, specifically in the form of ankle foot orthoses, can be effective in improving the ambulation status of children with cerebral palsy. Many previous studies have been done on this topic, but this study takes both qualitative and quantitative information into account. Through the use of gait analysis with motion sensor cameras, force plates, and market sets, biomechanical data shows improvements in gait deviations and effective ambulation. The qualitative data, in the form of a survey shows reasonings for non-compliance as well as perceived difficulties or improvements seen by caregivers of those participating. Using both sets of data there was an ability to analyze the correlation between the statements of the caregivers and how the participants were progressing. Practical applications of this data can be found in prescriptions and treatment plan design by the participants\u27 care team (physicians, physical therapists, orthotists). Using the information in this study as well as other research conducted on this topic, practitioners in the orthotic & prosthetic field can begin to provide earlier care to their patients

Female Retention and Participation: How have changing trends across the US affected the retention and participation of female track and field athletes at the NCAA level

    No full text
This study looked to identify key trends in female participation and retention in NCAA track and field. This will be accomplished through the use of a series of surveys and interviews to identify factors that led to a lack of participation, or not completing four years of eligibility. The study is designed to find common themes across a range of former student athletes, from several NCAA Division III track and field institutions across the country. Past research into participation numbers in HS Data analysis found factors that played a role in most cases, considered \u3e60%, and used them to develop a plan for future coaches and administrators to create a better environment to drive enrollment and participation. The study can be used as a template to continually grow female participation and used at the lower levels of the sport to foster an environment of growth and love within the sport of track and field

Second Language Acquisition Through Gaming: The Student\u27s Experience

    No full text
Gaming is often viewed as a hobby or a pastime activity, but its potential as a tool for education, particularly in language acquisition, is gaining attention. While games have been used in classrooms primarily for breaks, review activities, or gym classes, technology has introduced the possibility of integrating games more deeply into educational practices. However, the application of gamification in foreign language learning, particularly from the student’s perspective, remains unexplored. This mixed-method study employed action research that delved into the effectiveness, progress, and retention of language learning with high school students through gamification and game-based learning. Focusing on the student experience, this study sought to determine whether these methods can facilitate second language acquisition. The research was conducted alongside the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, designed to guide educators in integrating technology effectively into their teaching methods. This research aims to provide a new resource for students, teachers, and educators to use within classrooms or independently. After examining the potential of gaming to enhance motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes, this study aspired to contribute to the field of education by introducing innovative methods that could inspire students to continue their language learning journey. The study sought to answer the question: does gamification in language learning work? Several themes emerged. The first theme was the participants\u27 previous experiences with other language learning applications or general applications they used either in or outside of school. The second theme that emerged was the importance of proper implementation, as discussed by the participants regarding this particular type of application discussed in the study. The third theme was progress and ties to the validity of this application and the potential implementation in the classroom. While progress, in general, was not a big aspect of the study, it was worth looking at and comparing the progress scores from the quizzes to the participant’s thoughts and feelings in the interviews. The next theme was confidence. This theme focused on participant confidence from the beginning to the end of the study regarding the quizzes and interviews and what the participants felt while playing the game. The next theme was learning with gaming applications. This theme looked at the participants\u27 thoughts and opinions from their experiences from the study and discussed their experience with learning a second language through this application. The final theme that emerged was the discussion on the overall approach to this way of learning. In other words, what the participants believe about this approach to learning a second language and what they think worked well and what could be improved upon, as well as if they believe this approach worked and could work in their school. Stress and Trauma-related Concerns Among Law Enforcement

    Get PDF
Law enforcement personnel work in environments with routine exposure to high stress and trauma which can lead to increased risk for mental health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to learn about the prevalence and effects of PTSD and related mental health issues among law enforcement (LE) officers and how psychological issues are managed within the LE system. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design strategy was used that involved collecting quantitative data first and then explaining the results with in-depth follow-up qualitative data. In the first quantitative phase of the study, data was collected from articles citing statistical databases such as the FBI and related peer-reviewed articles to assess whether the way trauma and mental health is handled within law enforcement relates to negative mental health and behavioral issues among officers. The second qualitative phase was conducted as a follow-up to the quantitative results to help explain the results in greater depth. The insight gained explained the phenomenon and the relationship among variables in more detail. The study also examined suggested methods for improving the state of mental health awareness and methods for reducing the negative effects on law enforcement officers

Does Anyone Believe Me ?: The Traumatization of Domestic Violence Survivors in the Criminal Justice System

    Get PDF
Survivors of domestic violence are often subject to chronic trauma as well as a heightened risk of injuries and mental health problems and disorders. The intention of the author is to focus on how trauma impacts a survivor’s ability to maneuver and interact with the criminal justice system (CJS). Prior studies have shown how survivor’s behaviors, usually the result of trauma, can lead to misconceived notions and beliefs in court officials and those involved in the CJS. Survivors will often face judgment, doubt, and criticism in the CJS, and this can impact their willingness to come forward, report the abuse, and trust the CJS. Abusers in the CJS will often take advantage of this doubt and manipulate the survivor’s trauma to make them appear less credible. This paper looks to demonstrate how the proper responses by the CJS is important in order to encourage survivors to come forward and proceed with criminal charges. By encouraging education and training, compassionate and empathetic responses, and follow through by the court system, survivors can feel as though they have a voice and can reduce the likelihood of re-victimization

The Influence of Using Force Plate Testing in ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation on Re-Injury Rates

    No full text
Surgical repairs for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears are commonplace in any rehabilitation setting, totaling over 200,000 each year in high school alone. Due to a myriad of circumstances, up to 30% of those who had a surgical repair are going to experience a re-injury to that same leg, and while there are many who are not included in the re-injury population there are numerous others who will never return to their previous level of competition. Current objective measures for Return-to-Sport (RTS) criteria have not been raised to accommodate for the information clinicians have, and the bar must be elevated. Instead of relying on jump testing that measures distance or time alone, progress must be made to more advanced force plate technology that allows for more specific data collection and with this information, measured in a serial timeline, it is hypothesized that the re-injury rate can be significantly reduced. Collegiate athletes who have been cleared in their return-to-run protocol under supervision of their team physician can be enrolled in the study which will measure jump height, peak force, average force, peak braking force, and average braking force via Hawkins Dynamics G3 Bilateral Force Plate Set. Through the rehab process, athletes are expected to achieve 90% or greater limb symmetry in each of those variables through 24 months of post-operative rehabilitation before returning to sport. By advancing the testing criteria from standard hopping tests to dynamically measured variables, it is expected that the re-injury rate will significantly decrease
