An application of Hegel\u27s critique of Spinoza on Marx
Předkládaná stať aplikuje Hegelovo "vyvrácení" spinozismu na Marxe. Nejprve osvětluje povahu Hegelova pojetí filosofické kritiky, kterou Hegel staví do kontrastu s pouhou polemikou – střetem jedné geniální mysli s druhou. The proposed paper applies Hegel\u27s "refutation" of Spinozism on Marx. First, it illuminates Hegel\u27s conception of philosophical critique and contrasts it with a mere polemic – the clash of one brilliant mind against another. Against this background, Hegel\u27s refutation of Spinozism excels as a case of philosophical critique and not a mere polemic. Philosophical critique demands for itself to be immanent. It does not enrich the criticised philosophy with anything external. Rather, it observes (zusehen) how the criticised philosophy overcomes itself. Hegel\u27s famous comprehension of substance also as subject, or as Spirit, can serve as an example of such self-overcoming. What this comprehension actually does is that it provides the ontological meaning for what Hegel calls "external thinking", which, at first sight, gives the impression to be ontologically meaningless, to be a mere ideology, affection or, more or less, adequate idea. This "ontologisation of thinking" is, for Hegel, the only genuine refutation of Spinozism. The paper proposes that the same "ontologisation" – let us call it the "ontologisation of ideology" – is to be observed in order to genuinely refute Marx\u27s philosophy. This self-overcoming of Marx\u27s philosophy is to be observed in Hegel\u27s deduction of the concept of the State form the concept of civil society. The logical or conceptual transition from civil society to the State developed by Hegel corresponds to the re-conceptualisation of substance into Spirit. This re-conceptualisation genuinely refutes Spinozism as well as Marxism
On non-reductive explanations of religion : self-reflexivity and the boundaries of rationality
The article is a response to the book Naturalismus a protekcionismus ve studiu náboženství (Naturalism and Protectionism in the Study of Religions) by Juraj Franek, who argues that there are only two ways of theorizing religion: the "naturalistic" one, which sees religion as an illusion and explains it by reducing it to non-religious terms, and the "protectionist" one, which sees religious experience as something irreducible that can only be understood in a specific sui generis manner. Contra Franek, I show that there is a third way, one that explains religion in non-religious terms without reducing it. The key to this kind of non-reductive explanation is the way theories react to their own limitations. A reductive explanation is one that attempts to fully subordinate reality to its own categories, refusing to accept the existence of some aspects of it that are unpredictable and cannot be reduced to rational algorithms. A non-reductive explanation, on the other hand, is one that grants reality the right to resist a full conceptual grasp by ever surprising us with its ceaseless abundance and creativity. A non-reductive explanation may explicitly thematize these unfathomable aspects of reality (Turner\u27s conception of liminality being a classic example), or it may just implicitly grant them, mapping various social, psychological, or cognitive mechanisms without seeing these as exhaustively capturing the essence of religious phenomena (in this sense, a large part of the anthropological explanation of religion may be said to be implicitly non-reductive). The non-reductive approach is dialogical, denying the hegemonic role of Western rational discourse and seeing the study of other discourses as an opportunity for encountering other possibilities of being, and thus for reflecting the rationalistic self-delusions of modernity. In this way it questions the post-Enlightenment myth of disenchanted secularism, self-reflexively confronting us with the non-rational roots of our own (post-) modern world
,This publication aims to provide a cultural analysis of the university environment, where the main analytical tool is the concept of the "myth," both as a cultural phenomenon linking academia\u27s present with its past, and as a Jungian archetype. The authors conceive of myths as firmly tied to symbols which abound in education, rituals, hierarchical symbols and various traditions. This book presents to English readers the university culture of the so-called Humboldtian academic tradition, while focusing on the Czech higher education system in comparison to those of˛Germany, Poland, Austria and other countries. Of significant importance are the characteristics of˛Central European universities whose development in the 20th century was marked by discontinuity. This book mainly looks at academic culture from the position of the nonmetropolitan universities that emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the authors have conceived of this book historically, they are also interested in current issues, particularly the dispute between the Humboldtian ideal and "academic capitalism," the search for university unity within the framework of pressures to diversify, trends which weaken university freedoms, and the various forms of university administration. The authors have tried to inspire debate not only within historical circles, but also amongst those interested across the university community
[Theatre, my destiny : encounters with Bořivoj Srba]
Kniha s názvem Divadlo, můj osud. Setkávání s Bořivojem Srbou sestává z deseti rozhovorů s předním českým teatrologem, historikem, dramaturgem a pedagogem Bořivojem Srbou (1931‒2014). ,The book entitled Divadlo, můj osud. Setkávání s Bořivojem Srbou [Theatre, My Destiny. Encounters with Bořivoj Srba.] consists of ten interviews with the important Czech theatrologist, historian, dramaturge, and pedagogue Bořivoj Srba (1931˗2014). These interviews were broadcast under the title Divadlo, můj osud [Theater, My Destiny.] by the radio station Český rozhlas Brno in 2000. In the 1950s, Bořivoj Srba worked as a dramaturge for the Mrštík Brothers Theatre, in the 1960s, he was chief dramaturge for the National Theatre Brno, and he was greatly responsible for the theatre\u27s performances of political drama inspired by B. Brecht. He also co-founded the Goose on a String Theatre. The published interviews aim not only to resurrect the memories of one of Brno\u27s most prolific theatre-makers on his own creative era in Brno theatres, but also to introduce his thoughts on theatre, which he elaborated in his historical and theoretical publications (focusing mainly on the theatre of the Czech interwar avant-gardes and theatrical activities during the Second World War) and his lectures on academic institutions (the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and the Faculty of Theatre of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts). The published interviews are supplemented with the memories of selected friends and students of Srba (Miloš Štědroň, Andrea Jochmanová, Veronika Valentová),which help us to fully understand the significance of this theatrologist. At the beginning of the 1990s, he significantly contributed to the restoration of an independent department of theatre studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. This was the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, which he headed between 1993 and 2000
