The concept of scientific literacy in the Czech Republic : an analysis and comparison

    Get PDF
Scientific literacy is a term which has been internationally used since the 1950s. In recent decades, the term has often been connected to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The term also appears in the context of the Czech educational system, though it has multiple definitions. The objective of this study is to analyze and compare four documents on scientific literacy (of which three are Czech and one international). Content analysis and comparison of the documents show that individual definitions of the term share the following features: knowledge and the use of scientific terms, knowledge and the use of the scientific methods, reflection of scientific work, and the broader context of scientific knowledge. The definitions differ only slightly, mostly in their emphasis on the environment, the connections between the development of scientific and reading literacy, how they deal with information obtained from the media, and other minor details. The study concludes by showing that implementation of scientific literacy in the current revised curriculum seems to be possible without major difficulties

Asi třetina učitelů vnímá problémy nadaných v soc. oblasti a uvědomuje si obtížnost pedagogické činnosti s nadanými (sociokulturní koncepce). Menší část učitelů zastává koncepce konzervativní, liberální, nesouhlasí s integrací nadaných žáků a dokonce evidujeme i negativistické postoje k nadání. This article examines conceptions of giftedness and their influence on pedagogical practices. It aims to identify the conceptions of giftedness hidden in metaphorical terms stated by primary school and multi-year gymnasium teachers. Using metaphor analysis, we identified 20 thematic codes, which were sorted into respective conceptions of giftedness. The survey involved 432 teachers and resulted in 521 codes. We determined that nearly half of the metaphors described gifted pupils as highly efficient and endowed with brilliant characteristics (performance conceptions). About one third of the teachers were aware of the problems that gifted students face in the social area and the difficulty that accompanies pedagogical work with gifted pupils (socio-cultural conceptions). A smaller proportion of the teachers held conservative or liberal conceptions and did not agree with the integration of gifted students. We even registered negative attitudes towards giftedness among these teachers. The study further divides the conceptions into modern conceptions, which we consider to be developmental, and traditional ones, which develop talents only to a limited extent. The study shows that there is a strong preference for the traditional concepts

Three dimensions of dialogicity in dialogic argumentation

    Get PDF
Three dimensions of dialogicity are emphasised in the literature: dialogic teacher talk, students\u27 dialogic moves and organising for dialogic teaching. In this article, we examine these dimensions and the interplay between them in supporting dialogic argumentation in the context of whole-class discussions in mathematics and physics. Three seemingly different seventh-grade lessons were selected for further analysis from the database of a research project on dialogic argumentation. In this paper, we focus on whole-class discussions after a group assignment. The lessons were video recorded with multiple cameras and transcribed. We characterised dialogic features of teacher talk, more general teacher decisions and organising for dialogic teaching, as well as students\u27 dialogic and justifying moves. In addition, we examined how these were connected. According to the results, the three dimensions of dialogicity played out differently in the lessons. Furthermore, the results give insights into the interplay of the three dialogicity dimensions and students\u27 justifying moves in dialogic argumentation
