Myth as a topic and a commonplace in the post-Tridentine literary text : Interpretatio Slavica of the antique myth and soteriological myth in Vila Slovinka by Juraj Baraković
This paper reflects upon function and status of mythological topics and figures in the poem Vila Slovinka (1614) by Juraj Baraković. The poem in its entirety possesses a significant layer of antique figurality of mythological provenance, that was widespread in the literature of the early modern period, as a kind of humanistic legitimization of an educated writer, even whilst writing in vernacular. The post-Tridentine influences on the poem are reflected in genre and topical features of the second part of the poem, which represent a deflection in relation to its first part, originally conceived and written as a self-contained whole; and which are further reflected in interfering mythical topics and popular figures. Since mythological and Christian motifs, topics and figurations indicate both the author\u27s educational and ideological habitus respectively, it is interesting to contextualize the effort invested in the coexistence of the humanist and the post-Tridentine, the two patterns coexisting in the poem
Topic and shape issues of Horák\u27s work (between prose, film and theater)
Tvorba Karola Horáka osciluje neustále medzi prozaickým, filmovým a divadelným princípom. Karol Horák\u27s oeuvre is constantly oscillating between the prose, film and theater principles. In his work, elements from these three types of art interfere. Looking for new forms, experimenting with text, searching for new shapes, we could characterize the work of Karol Horák. Theme and shape, these are the two most important segments that Horak improves in the improvised way, constantly transforming, it is a specific workflow in creating the resulting text and shape. The theme is the original inspirational basis at the beginning of the process, gradually transforming into an individual form in a particular creative prose or theater presentation
Listiny a listy o protihusitské obchodní blokádě
The present paper studies the charters and letters originating during the Catholic trade embargo first imposed against the Czech Hussites between 1420 and 1436, and reassumed in the late 1460s and early 1470s. The different types of documents are first studied with regard to their formal characteristics and their classification in terms of late medieval diplomatics. Secondly, lost correspondence is reconstructed in order to demonstrate the great void of missing documents, preventing us from truly grasping the widespread use of the written word during the Hussite Wars. Thirdly, the publication of papal and royal mandates enforcing the anti-Hussite embargo is analysed to demonstrate both the practical use of the documents in question, and their importance for Catholic anti-Hussite policy
The role of the teacher in supporting students\u27 epistemic thinking in dialogic argumentation : a case study
The purpose of this qualitative research paper was to explore the role of a teacher in supporting students\u27 epistemic understanding and argumentation. The main subject of our research was expert teacher Daniela, who had been teaching Czech language arts for twelve years and undertook a developmental program on dialogic teaching three years prior to this study. Data were gathered through structured observations, six video recordings of teaching, and several interviews with the teacher and students. The findings showed that the teacher tried to depersonalise students\u27 arguments and sought to make the argument jointly owned by everybody in the classroom so that it was possible to discuss the nature of the argument and not the student\u27s personal opinion. The findings reveal that the depersonalisation is a unique procedure that could increase students\u27 participation in dialogic argumentation while preserving their personal opinions
The fragment of the "Gospel of Jesus\u27 Wife" : the end of the story
In Religio 1/2013 I reported on a newly discovered fragment of the Coptic text in which Jesus speaks about his wife. Many scholars have had strong reasons to regard this fragment, called the "Gospel of Jesus\u27 Wife" (GJW), as a modern forgery. My present article summarizes the new reasons leading to the conclusion that this particular text is a forgery and briefly discusses the problem of detecting forgeries of early Christian texts in general. On the example of the dispute about the authenticity of the Letter to Theodore (the Mar Saba Letter), we can see that with the absence of serious doubts about language, writing or material, and with a – however problematic – content making good sense in the ancient context it may be very difficult to determine whether a text is a forgery or not. The article also deals with several notions of the married Jesus as found in the history of biblical interpretation, the conclusion being that the idea of Jesus\u27 wife, most often recognized as Mary Magdalene, has been widely known only since the 20th century. These modern interpretations have arisen through a stronger emphasis on the human nature of Jesus. Perhaps the first person to come with the idea of a fully human (and married) Jesus was Nikos Kazantzakis in his novel The Last Temptation (1955)
"Do what thou wilt" : the history of a precept
Aleister Crowley is the most notoriously transgressive figure in modern Western esotericism, and his best known precept is "Do what thou wilt". This article seeks to elucidate the place of Crowley\u27s precept in the history of esotericism and transgression. More specifically, it seeks to make two points. First, it shows, through an investigation of its sources and influences, that the precept had highly transgressive overtones in the period when Crowley adopted and popularised it. These overtones extended to sexual excess, religious deviancy and fascist politics. Second, it argues that the precept was repurposed in a major way in the latter part of the twentieth century. The precept became domesticated, as the founders of the Wicca movement subsumed it into their own ethical maxim, the "Wiccan Rede". This development serves as an example of how some of the more transgressive and problematic elements of the Western esoteric tradition have come to be softened and obscured in contemporary mass-market, suburban forms of practice such as Wicca
