The article reveals the methods and techniques of formation of the Christian context, the form of representation of which is the symbolic space of the novel text, which are actual for N. Příspěvěk se zabývá možností porovnání poetiky dvou spisovatelek – Daniely Hodrové a Svetlany Velmarové-Jankovićové. Komparaci literárních témat a poetiky obou autorek lze demonstrovat na trilogii Hodrové, symbolicky nazvané Trýznivé město (jež obsahuje romány Podobojí, Kukly, Théta), doplněné esejistickou prózou Město vidím, u Svetlany Velmarové-Jankovićové se jedná o díla Dorćol, Vračar a román Lagum (Žalář).The study analyzes the possibility of comparing the poetics of two writers – Daniela Hodrová and Svetlana VelmarJanković. The literary work of Czech and Serbian writer is mainly based on presenting the space of their hometown which they both do in a similar manner – by interweaving their personal memories with collective history. Contact points between the two authors are to be seen in their interest in buildings, monuments and other cultural city sights. Both writers reflect their hometown in themselves which could be read in their prose. The comparison of their interests and poetics could be conducted on Hodrová\u27s trilogy symbolically named as The Tormented city (which contains the novels The Kingdom of Souls, Cocoons and Theta), supplemented with the book of essays I see the city, and Velmar-Janković\u27s documentary prose Dorćol, Vračar and novel The Dungeon

Jackie the Greek: the Onassis marriage and the hellenization of an American icon

    Get PDF
A 1968 series of satirical audio sketches concerning the marriage and lifestyle of Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy provides an opportunity to re-examine the reputation of this famous couple. These recordings connect with well-known negative assumptions – both in the contemporaneous media and in the previously restricted governmental files from the British National Archives used here – about Kennedy\u27s cynicism and Onassis\u27 Greek heritage. It will also be argued here that Jackie\u27s attempts to engage with Greece, especially Modern Greece, were a deliberate choice as part of her new identity, but in reality merely contributed to her damaged image

Negotiations between Christian communities and authoritarian China : some comments on the current state of scholarship on Christianity in China

    Get PDF
This article aims to critically evaluate the current state of research into the Protestant and Catholic Churches in the Chinese context. It introduces two main academic discourses on Christianity in China; it also mentions some challenges connected to the use of the triple-market approach proposed by Yang Fenggang, and extensively used by many scholars of Chinese religions today. Instead of employing the market approach, I believe in the need to confront the main discourses with empirical data. In the article, I use the example of the official Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which is categorised as a "red" religious market supporting communist rule. As such, the churches united under this body are often neglected by researchers, as they are perceived as "unproblematic" – and, therefore, do not support the narrative of Christian groups victimized by the Chinese government. Nonetheless, the Christian churches (or any religious groups within the "red" market) need our scholarly attention, as choosing cooperation instead of opposition is not unproblematic – and various processes of negotiation between a religious group and the government should be included in the research

Entering higher education after 30 : what can be learned from biographical narratives of non-traditional students

    Get PDF
The needs of the market and of knowledge society, combined with democratic ideals, have justified policies that encourage the adult population to continue their studies. Portugal has been following this political movement, which in turn drives non-traditional students to higher education. In order to uncover the reasons that lead these students to enter higher education and the challenges it poses to them, research was conducted using biographical narratives. These narratives revealed the existence and effects of intrinsic motivations related to the satisfaction of learning and to the pleasures of taking part in stimulating activities and of achieving or overcoming something. They also showed the importance of having strategies to combat dispositional, situational, and institutional barriers in order to prevent non-traditional students from dropping out
