Literary-critical views on the poetry of Maša Haľamová in the 20th and the 21st centuries (exegesis in the archive research)
The partial goal of our archive research in the Slovak National Library in Martin (unprocessed collection), aimed at the contextualisation of works written by Maša Haľamová (1908–1995), was to reconstruct the views of literary critics published in the press of that times or preserved in typescripts or manuscripts from the first half of the 20th century when her first collection of verse Dar (The Gift, 1928) came out. The summarised criticism (from 1928 to 2017) shows that the views of opinion-making specialists and literary scholars pointed out the specifics of her poetics, or intertextual and inter-literary relations towards the Czech literature, and confirmed her solitariness (she is difficult to categorise), but also her typical moral and ethical potential with the mark of nobility. As can be seen, it is the very spiritualness, confessionally anchored in the Protestant tradition, that gradually vanished from the perception of specialists which made room for alternative forms of expression, or even for the questioning the Christian spirituality
Židovskí hrdinovia vo filmových adaptáciách režiséra Jána Kadára
Director Ján Kadár (1918–1979) in his films portrayed national, cultural and social diversity not only as a generator of interpersonal conflicts, but often also as an inspiring environment. Kadár\u27s fascination with the heterogeneous cultural environment is closely connected with his fate, a Jew growing up in a Hungarian-Slovak environment, whose life experience was significantly influenced by anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. The study aims to focus on the interpretation of character of Jewish heroes in Kadár\u27s work with a focus on his three film adaptations – the Czech-Slovak film Obchod na korze [The Shop on Main Street] (1965) based on Ladislav Grosman, the American film Angel Levine (1970) based on a short story by Bernard Malamud and the Canadian film Lies my Father Told Me, which was based on a short story by Ted Allan. In addition to comparison of the mentioned film adaptations with literary works, the study will also focus on Kadár\u27s legacy for contemporary filmmaking and contemporary film audiences.
Photographs as a mirror of the historical visual character of towns (with the example of Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav)
In addition to the analysis of written sources and the study of maps, another source of information on the historical visual character of towns is pictorial works, i.e., vedutas and, since the 19th century, photographs. Photographs and postcards capturing public spaces and buildings that no longer exist are essential for the purposes of historical topography. Studying and comparing these materials might contribute to reconstructing past roads and urban developments, locating buildings, and defining their visual aspects and purpose. Despite the fact that photographs are a relatively recent source, one of the pitfalls might be the dating of them
Schallers\u27s Topographie des Königreiches Böhmen as a source of heraldry
In addition to a wide variety of data, mostly of an economic nature, Schallers\u27s Topographie des Königreiches Böhmen also provided information in several fields of auxiliary historical sciences. One of the questions in the questionnaire focused on the shape of the coats of arms of the cities and towns. This study deals with an analysis of two parts of Schaller\u27s Topographie for the Boleslav and Rakovník regions from the perspective of heraldry and attempts to give an answer to the question of how far this work is still useful primarily for research into the historical development of civic heraldry
Rieger\u27s "eights". Metamorphosis and possibilities of Rieger\u27s legacy in 1918, 1938 and 1948
This study deals with remembering of former "Leader of the Nation" František Ladislav Rieger in the annual years of his birth and death in 1918, 1938 and 1948. It will be focused on celebrations and commemorative acts, which took place in these years, and on the participation of the political representation, historians and Rieger\u27s family. The main questions are: how Rieger\u27s legacy was interpreted by different political parties and how Rieger\u27s place in the Czech historical memory changed owing to the events happened in the years ending with eight which are traditionally considered as an important milestones of the modern Czech history
T. G. Masaryk\u27s "second life" in Bulgaria (1937)
The aim of the current paper is to assess the Bulgarian reflections on T. G. Masaryk\u27s death in 1937. I am going to apply the theoretical approach of the German historian Reinhart Koselleck, who asserted that the "political cult of the dead" should be explored in a certain historical context and the commemoration of the "dead hero" was intended to reconstruct historical events and images. Therefore, before approaching my main objective, I will make a brief overview of the Bulgarian image of TGM in the context of the Bulgarian-Czechoslovak political relationship during the interwar period. I rely mainly on Bulgarian and Czechoslovak periodical press as well as on archival sources, published documents, and secondary literature, related to the subject. In my case study the periodical press assumes the role of intercultural communication and a mechanism of constructing cultural and national stereotypes
