El Papel de los Abuelos Varones: Un Análisis Comparado de la Sociedad Mejicana y Española
In analysing the importance of the current roles of grandfathers in the family in Spain and Mexico, this study attempts to deepen knowledge of these roles in two different social contexts which share similar cultural roots. In respect of gender and from a cultural and generational perspective, the research aims to shed light on the figure and role of grandfathers, who have long been overshadowed by their spouses – the grandmothers. As author (2010) and Mann et al. (2013) highlight, changes at both the demographic and social level have contributed to grandfathers playing an increasingly important role in the lives of their grandchildren. It is important to underscore the originality of this research, since little attention has been paid to date to this area of research; indeed, the invisibility of the grandfather’s role almost underpins a false belief in its non-existence. It must also be stressed that this is the first comparative, transnational analysis of this type. The qualitative analysis reveals generational idiosyncratic characteristics among the grandfathers studied here and their own grandfathers, in Mexico and Spain, as well as a change in traditional gender roles, with certain country-specific nuances. In all the cases studied grandfathers interviewed express feeling a state of happiness. In addition, it can be appreciated a perception of a break with the role’s characteristic of the own grandparents.
There is an extensive literature on the importance of the use of scientific evidence on teaching methods in higher education institutions. However, there is a gap in how evidence is used for decision making that affects students and staff in universities. This article is a contribution to the existing gap, making the analysis of a specific case on how Catalan universities have managed the decision making regarding their staff in the face of the pandemic situation with the COVID-19. In this article, through the interview with managers and faculty from different Catalan universities, it will be shown to what extent these university institutions have opted for decision making in the management of the situation based on scientific evidence or simply compliance with government regulations.
Mathematical resilience is a student's ability to survive and be positive when facing difficulties and anxiety in learning mathematics as indicated by the ability to work collaboratively with groups, and have language skills to communicate mathematical understanding. Learning mathematics online caused various negative conditions for students; reduced learning interactions, internet disturbances, material that was not optimally explained, even low support for studying at home. This study aims to find out about students’ mathematical resilience when taking online mathematics lessons during the Covid 19 Pandemic. A qualitative phenomenological design was used, in which 20 high school students in Medan, participated. Data was collected through an open online questionnaire and interview, due to the implementation of social restrictions in Medan. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. The results are summed up: (1) Implementation and use of mathematics learning platforms during the Covid 19 Pandemic; (2) Adaptation of students learning mathematics; (3) Students' belief in learning mathematics; (4) students' communication skills during mathematics learning; (5) The Support for learning mathematics. This study recommends several suggestions to strengthen students' mathematical resilience in order to overcome mathematical difficulties and problem when taking online mathematics learning. Stories and experiences of long-distance care, the case: Israel and Mexico
The aim of this paper is to present the experiences of long-distance care amongst Spanish-speaking immigrant women in Israel and women living in Mexico, and to compare their experiences of care, where geographical distance is the constant variable. The research was carried out through an exploratory, transversal and non-experimental qualitative study, with non-statistical sampling, for continuous inclusion for convenience. The instrument used was an open questionnaire, based on Patton's in-depth interview structure. The main findings show the need to recognize and value the role of the long-distance caregiver in research and support approaches because of the potential impact of migration and caregivers on acculturation, stress experienced by the long-distance caregiver, the support they both may receive in the country of origin and in the country where they live, as well as the family's perception of them in terms of what caregiving means, all through critical analysis perspectives from gender, interculturality and intersectionality. Finally, the stories of the six participating women show important contributions in the care they provide to their sick family member, the primary caregiver and the rest of the family. Also, the experience of long-distance care was not determined by the length of the distance; the feelings and emotions that these women experience are the same, international migration or migration within the country were not determined
The Phenomenon of Leading without Guidebook: Educational Leadership Practices of Philippine School Principals in Virulent COVID-19 Times
The school principals play a pivotal role in leading educational institutions. Their lived experience as educational leaders in the context of a virulent crisis, however, is largely unexplored. This paper sought to discover the essence of educational leadership practices of school principals in the context of the current COVID-19 crisis. Following phenomenology as a research design, the researcher explored the world of six Filipino school principals through interview procedures. The analysis method developed by Colaizzi (1978) was used. The results revealed six emerging themes of educational leadership practices during a crisis as follows: 1.) navigating the crisis with adaptive leadership; 2.) cultivating practices in crisis management; 3.) managing through the machine; 4.) freezing the standards and patterns; 5.) promoting inclusivity in the new normal, and 6.) caring first for what is essential. These themes form the basis of the description and structure of the phenomenon offered at the end of the paper. Considering the present scarcity of knowledge on how school principals respond in times of crisis, this paper provides insights into educational leadership practices within the context of the COVID-19 situatio
Leadership approaches of principals heading National Strategy Learner Attainment Schools in South Africa
This study examines the leadership approaches associated with sustained improved academic performance of principals heading National Strategy for Learner Attainment (NSLA) schools. This article reports on a qualitative multiple-case study focused on five successful NSLA secondary schools in Cape Town, South Africa. Data was collected from principals, teachers and selected School Management Team (SMT) members via questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to understand the leadership practices and personality traits that characterised the leadership approaches of principals to facilitate teaching and learning for improving academic performance of learners. The findings indicated that an integrated leadership principal leadership framework would be most effective because it would cultivate community between teachers and learners and result into improved academic performance. This approach encapsulates the various leadership approaches and the leadership personality traits or characteristics of the principals as well as taking into consideration the situational context for effective leadership and decision-making
The study represents a contribution in the field of notions and practices of teachers in Infant, Primary and Secondary Education regarding curricular materials in the areas of Natural and Social Sciences. Particularly it focuses on the use of teaching materials in relation with curricular elements (key competences, methodology, activities, content, resources and materials, evaluation, and environmental context). A mixed methodology is used based on survey and interview instruments with a sample of 962 Andalusian teachers. The results reveal consensus between the three groups regarding the need to supplement textbooks, considering its limitations in developing key competences and meaningful learning, with other materials to enrich the teaching / learning processes. However, at a methodological level, Infant and Primary teachers consider to a greater degree the role of textbooks in promoting conventional and transmissive teaching practices. The conclusions underpin the need to enhance the curricular competence of teachers and support the design, development and evaluation of curricular materials experienced in classroom practice.
Learning Online amid COVID-19 pandemic: Exploring students' lived experiences
This paper explores the lived experiences of online learning by 2020 first year students in institutions of higher education in South Africa, students with no prior experience of online learning before COVID-19. Using a qualitative approach, a sample of 50 students was interviewed. Findings indicate that students’ online experiences were impacted upon by various factors which resulted in both positive and negative experiences. Factors that impacted learners’ online experiences include those linked both directly and indirectly to technology and learning online. Such factors include online preparedness, lecturer support, student-to-student engagement, flexible learning pathways, connectivity, learning technologies, digital literacy and self-management skills. Generally, students who received proper induction and support from their lecturers and institutions experienced online learning in a positive manner. Some institutions were not prepared for online learning and offered less support to students which affected students’ experiences of online learning. The paper thus argues that there is need for institutions to invest in online learning technologies, for Government to address issues of digital literacy and readiness and ensure that the right infrastructure is available. With the fourth industrial revolution having been fast-tracked by COVID-19, it is prudent to ensure that learners are technologically savvy
History of MeToo University movement in Spain
The precedents of the MeToo University movement, both in USA and Spain, has been led since the 1990s both by people who have taken a stand against sexual harassment in universities. The present study reflects the history of the MeToo University in Spain with an emphasis in the start of organized movement in 2013, also simultaneously with the one organized in the USA. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with people who led this transformation since its beginnings, as well as with others who have joined recently, in order to learn about the historical scope of this movement from a qualitative approach. Those people have suffered from isolating gender violence for daring to break the silence, being a loudspeaker and putting a name to a problem still silenced in Spanish universities and in the world. The movement has achieved great advances in academic settings, such as the obligation of all universities to have protocols for action in case of sexual harassment or gender violence, the legislation of isolating gender violence, and an unstoppable number of people who come out to tell their cases.
