Worked Example Mid-Semester Intervention in College Algebra: English
The enrollment in lower-level mathematics courses has been on the increase in the last decade. It has been estimated that the DFW rate may rise to the level of 50% in courses that can be classified as college algebra. Numerous interventions have been utilized for college algebra and other mathematics classes to help students, including supplemental instruction, peer-led team learning, group learning, flipped classrooms, and integrating technology. In this study, we offered a half-semester course that implemented worked example worksheets, which were used in a previous full-semester intervention, to help students with the college algebra material. Results showed that the thirty students who participated in the worked example pass/fail mid-semester class significantly outperformed the college algebra students who did not participate in the intervention on total points in the course, quizzes, and tests 3 and 4. In addition, participants earned a significantly higher course GPA, attended significantly more regular class lectures, and earned a higher final exam score. Finally, we analysed the qualitative data to develop five themes about the worked examples and intervention. We conclude that the mid-semester intervention is a good just-in-time mechanism to implement after the semester has started to help students succeed in the class
El Feminismo en las Series de Ficción de Amazon Prime
Television series are interesting objects of study to observe the representation that is performed on different social subjects. In this sense, it is interesting to know how serial narratives represent a movement traditionally denigrated by mass media: feminism. Under this premise, this article analyzes three fiction series announced as feminists on the consumer on demand platform Amazon Prime. The study universe has been composed of the series broadcast on the platform during the first quarter of 2020, a total of three series: Good Girls Revolt, Little Fires Everywhere and Dietland. A methodology has been developed for the study that includes concepts of audiovisual narrative and feminism. The results have shown the prevalence of liberal feminist values, with an emphasis on individual fulfillment and sexual liberation.
Universities as traditional institutions imply that they are highly masculinized in terms of formal and informal organizational dynamics. This work is part of a qualitative and national research on gender violence and masculinities in traditional and private universities in Chile. For this, 24 discussion groups were held: 8 mixed groups, 8 groups of men and 8 groups of women, taking as field of observation 8 institutions of higher education, located in the four cities with the highest university enrollment in the country (Santiago, Valparaíso, Concepcion and Temuco). Using the guidelines of the Grounded Theory for the analysis of the information, the results show the presence of the hegemonic model of masculinity as a transversal element in higher education institutions, in addition to models of masculinity that have been called masculinities in transition in the which elements of transformation are observed, but nevertheless persist with traditional elements of masculinity. This type of masculinity tries to distance itself from the hegemonic model of masculinity in terms of violence mainly, which would account for a process of change in young students. However, patterns of hegemonic and traditional models continue to be reproduced, particularly with regard to the gender relations of young Chilean students.
Communication between parents and their university offspring and sources of personal and social support
Communication allows the interrelationship of family members and has an influence on the personal and social adjustment of offspring. This research paper analyzes the types of family communication that exist between parents and their offspring and the sources of personal and social support available to university students. The link between the gender and the search for parent-offspring support variables are studied against the types of family communication. A quantitative analysis has been performed based on a descriptive, correlational and comparative design, and taking 906 students from a European university as the sample. The results indicate it was found that, overall, university students had a positive relationship with their parents. It was further discovered that daughters develop more negative behaviors and hurtful attitudes toward their mother than sons. University students tend to value and turn to different sources of support depending on the issue they wish to solve, with differences being noted based on gender. We conclude that university students have an open and satisfactory friendly relationship with both their parents, and value the family support they receive positively when they have personal and social problems. The variables analyzed are discriminative and predictive elements of how the relationship between parents and their offspring works.
The objective of this essay is to document how hegemonic masculinity is socially reproduced through almost imperceptible processes of androcracy, and concomitantly, to demonstrate how androcracy strategically influences the professional development of Mexico's social capital, since meritocracy from androcracy is a simulation game of female promotion. All these androcratic processes exclude men and women of the high academic profile from high and mid-high positions, thus originating alterations in daily politics. To document this androcratic process, the text is divided into three sections: the first part presents the state of the art of masculinity; in the next section, using qualitative techniques and participant observation methods, three examples of androcracy are described, in different geographical and socio-political scales: the international example analyzes the case of the NXIVM sect, the national example analyzes the case of the National System of Researchers of Mexico, and the local example analyzes the case of the Universidad Veracruzana. The most relevant results, which indicate that psychological control continues to be an androcratic mechanism used to try to manipulate women with a high academic profile.
Misconceptions of Upper-Secondary School Students on Doing Behavioral Sciences Research
With its long tradition, research on misconceptions helps to understand how concepts are learned and how learning in the disciplines can be supported. Up to now, research on misconceptions has focused on natural sciences, while research on misconceptions in behavioral sciences is scarce, not to say absent. In this study an attempt was made to reveal upper secondary school students’ misconceptions on doing research in behavioral sciences. The starting point for the study were research proposals of upper secondary school students. As part of a larger study, students were asked to write a research proposal in maximum two pages. A two-steps approach was adopted in the analysis of these research proposals. First, using a codebook containing both deductive and inductive codes, two-pagers were analyzed in order to identify ‘errors’. In a second step, an interpretative analysis aimed at inferring potential misconceptions underlying these errors. The study can be considered as a starting point for research on misconceptions in behavioral sciences which is currently missing in the field
This article explores the gender dimension of young people participation in Tunisian civil society organizations (CSOs) that emerged largely after the 2011 "revolution". The main aims are, first, to provide information on the Tunisian context; second, to characterize this new activism marked by a large participation of young women; and, third, to identify whether there are elements typical of a gender division of positions, responsibilities and activism work. The Tunisian case is very interesting because political transitions are crucial moments for women's rights and associations. Based on two surveys, we put forward the hypothesis that inequality between men and women in the allocation of responsibilities will increase or decrease depending on the degree of gender inequality in the possession of skills and resources (educational, linguistic, socio-economic) and previous experiences of associative socialization. After outlining the national context, we find that the profiles, resources and socialization of activists are relatively homogeneous. However, while women and men gain access to positions of responsibility with some equality via elections to the executive bodies of CSOs, male leadership prevails in ad hoc activities that grant greater individual public recognition and leadership.
Moving from a segregated to a coeducational context: Exploring Iranian female medical students' ownership and investment in language learning
The present study examined Iranian female medical students' transition from a segregated school system to a coeducational university context to uncover how they invested in their learning in the new context. The participants of this qualitative study were 23 female medical students, taking a general English language course in a mixed class of 54 students. This was their first experience of being in a coeducational environment. During the term the researchers/instructors observed the class, and also the students were interviewed to examine their understanding and feelings about this experience and its influence on their learning. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Taking Norton's (2015) investment model as a point of departure, the findings showed that female students invested in language learning by focusing on the capital, identity, and ideology that they were dealing with in the coeducational class. The findings showed that despite the common belief in the Iranian society that female learners are shy in coeducational settings, the participants invested in learning and owned their identity as medical students. They considered the class as a miniature setting to learn how to cooperate effectively with the male students to be ready for the mixed environment of their future profession
Amotivation: A Key Predictor of College GPA, College Match, and First-Year Retention
Two studies examined the relationships between motivational orientation, college student success, and first-year retention. In Study 1, 523 college students completed measures of motivational orientation and student success. Results indicated that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were positively related to college GPA, student-university match and adjustment to college. In contrast, amotivation was negatively related to these dependent variables. Study 2 examined a mediational model in which motivational orientation, most consistently amotivation, predicted lower college student GPA and poorer college match. These, in turn predicted a decrease in first-to-second-year retention among 385 first-year college students. These results suggest that colleges may wish to address amotivation among students as a way to enhance student success and retention.
There is a remarkable number of papers on community participation and on the debate about its promotion from the institutional power (top-down) or from the citizens themselves (bottom-up). However, there is a gap in the scientific literature on the key elements that achieve social impact with community participation promoted from below (bottom-up). This article presents a case study of the Adult School La Verneda-Sant Martí, which has been in existence for 44 years. Based on the communicative methodology, 5 in-depth interviews have been conducted with people who have participated in the school project. The main finding is that dialogic leadership has been a key element for the social impact of this school.
