From prima donna to teacher. Two female pioneers in singing education in the Nineteenth Century: Virginia Boccabadati and Matilde Esteban
During the 19th-century, the teaching of singing became a career opportunity for the women who had worked in the lyrical stage. The core objective of this article is to reclaim the role of women in music education by studying two prime donnewho, after building a career as successful professional singers, became singing teachers and were pioneers in publishing their methods for female voice education. This research is based on the review and analysis of documentation, mostly historical.
By looking at the biographies of the Italian singer, Virginia Boccabadati (1830-1922) and the Spanish singer, Matilde Esteban (1841-1915), we can discover the context in which their treatises were published and the image they offer of woman as a singer and as a student. By choosing women who were each other's contemporary, but from different countries, helps us to observe the obvious points related to gender determinants that their treatises had in common. Aggressiveness is negatively related to attractiveness and social power. Argumentativeness is important for the position one holds in their network and argumentational deficiency may lead to marginalization. Gender, body characteristics and academic distinction affect attractiveness and aggressiveness emergence.
Technological advances in industrial production have modified international financial management, and the traditional influence of the city in commercial transactions. The transport and telecommunications revolution has led to the normalization of travel and human flows, where in addition the evolution of the city has been in close dependence on private investment, a fact that has triggered the reduction of public spaces, in benefit of the space profitability with massive consumer business and with the expansion of urbanization. Given the current climate situation with high levels of pollution, the city of the 21st century should review its growth models, and change towards a more responsible posture with respect to the environmental characteristics of the place, where layers of the past could exercise a good influence on this reinterpretation. Furthermore, artistic production should play a prominent role in visualizing these needs, in this case, an interactive application is exposed within the experimental cartography that shows the heritage quality of the nearby landscape the path of one of the eight historic irrigation canals, called Rascanya that structured the city of Valencia.
This paper focuses on the scientific production that has been generated on single-parent families headed by a man. The objective is to identify contributions that have been made from different areas of knowledge, and to provide a descriptive synthesisof these contributions, focusing on the research interests that these families have raised over time. This will allow us to systematize, albeit in an approximate way, the scientific research in the field of single fatherhood. In methodological terms, thestudy is based on a bibliographic search in documentary collections of international libraries. After obtaining the final list, each contribution was reviewed to identify descriptive issues. The results are presented in two historical phases. The first one, focused on the seventies and eighties when the research topic started to arouse some interest in the scientific community. The second one, from the nineties to the present. A historical approach is prioritized in the analysis, in order to observe theevolution of research interests.
Are 9th Grade Students Ready to Engage in the Theoretical Discursive Process in Geometry?
This study was conducted to examine whether newly enrolled 9th grade students were ready to directly engage in the theoretical discursive process from the perspective of Duval’s Cognitive Model. The sample of the study was comprised of 51 newly-enrolled 9thgrade students between the ages of 14 and 15, who had not received any prior geometry instruction. These 51 students were posed two open-ended questions that would enable them to make a transition between perceptual and discursive apprehension. The qualitative data obtained from the open-ended questions were classified into three categories, and clinical interviews were held with three students from each category. According to the findings obtained from the study, many of the students could not display the necessary behaviors for theoretical discursive process. Students were mostly unsuccessful in converting discursive information into perceptual information, in writing discursive information based on perceptual information, and making inferences based on discursive information. These findings indicate that recent graduates of secondary school are not ready enough to directly engage in theoretical discursive process and, thus, they could experience difficulties in such high order skills as providing proof requiring the theoretical discursive process.
How Must a Polygon Be According to Hard of Hearing Students? An Investigation with a Semiotic Approach
This study explores how hard of hearing students decided whether the shape was a polygon and which semiotic sources were used when the students engaged in explaining geometrical concepts. It was defined how the students interacted with geometric shapes using semiotic sources and examined how such multimodal interactions with geometric figures displayed their reasoning. The study was a case study and carried out three hard of hearing students. The data was collected through interviews and analyzed with content analysis. It was detected that the students paid attention to edge, angle, and vertex of the shapes in the process of identifying polygon. It was seen that the students used gesture, speech, sign language, inscriptions which are semiotic sources and personal or mathematical definitions to express polygon concept. However, it has been determined that students have some misconceptions in the process of explaining concepts. It is suggested that the words used in the concept definition should be selected carefully by the teachers to teach the concepts correctly and the teachers use hand signs for concepts in their lesson
Empirical Validation of a Model for Predicting Students' Sense of Belonging and School Engagement as a Function of Classroom Management Practices
Over the last two decades, several studies have overlooked at-school belonging and engagement, two dimensions that are associated with several positive outcomes. However, the relative influence that contexts and interventions may have on these components has received much less attention. In this study, school belonging and engagement were examined as a function of the implementation and application of classroom rules. The study took place in two Moroccan schools, and participants were 238 students from 9th grade (101 boys, 137 girls; Mage = 15.1) living in the cities of Casablanca and Témara. They all completed a questionnaire that allowed to measure their belonging and engagement in conjunction with the manner in which rules are implemented and applied. Correlational and structural equation modeling methods were used to analyze the aforementioned relationships. Results showed that implementation of classroom rules had a positive effect on school belonging, which, in turn, had a positive effect on school engagement. These results indicated the need to conduct further empirical research to measure the contribution of classroom management practices on school belonging
Strengthening Ties to L2: Improving Secondary Students’ Attitudes through Dialogic Literary Gatherings.
Over the last decades, many efforts have been made to establish the Basque minority language as a normalized language in the Basque Country. Research has shown that language use, language proficiency and attitudes towards language are closely associated. Likewise, the benefit of interactive learning environments for improving language proficiency is well known. However, the effect of such environments on attitudes towards second languages (L2) has been less studied. This article presents a qualitative study that explores the extent to which the implementation of a particular dialogue-based classroom strategy, named Dialogic Literary Gatherings (DLGs), may transform secondary students’ attitudes towards Basque (L2). The DLGs were carried out with 46 secondary education students in the Basque Country. After implementing DLGs, teachers’ interviews and students’ focus groups were conducted and analysed inductively. Results show that participants reported changes in students’ attitudes towards Basque and they related these changes to the dialogical space they experienced during the DLGs, since this created affordances for them to engage in meaningful discussions when speaking in Basque. Implications of the study are discussed
