    Rescatando el legado de Ediciones Gráficas Escuela de Arte UC (1980-1989)

    "Recuperando el legado de EDICIONES GRÁFICAS UC 1980-1989" es un proyecto de investigación y rescate patrimonial de las obras producidas por el grupo de Grabado de la Escuela de Arte UC en la década de los ochenta. En ese tiempo se realizaron ocho carpetas temáticas con grabados de profesores, estudiantes, egresados y artistas invitados, en donde se produjeron 48 grabados inéditos de 20 autores, con una edición total de 3300 copias. Las ediciones de las carpetas variaron entre ediciones de 40 a 150 ejemplares. Este material se expuso y circuló por un tiempo y posteriormente quedó en el olvido, guardado en distintas cajas en bodegas. En el año 2019 junto a la profesora María Elena Farías comenzamos a reunir el material existente, logrando compilar 1024 grabados, con al menos una copia de las 8 carpetas producidas. Se genero un fondo de colección específico para el Archivo de Grabado UC, escaneando el material para producir un catálogo digital. También se realizaron entrevistas a 3 de los participantes de la creación de Ediciones Gráficas, las que se incluyen en el presente catálogo y se registran en un video documental generado en esta investigación. Este proyecto se termino en enero del 2025 y contó con el apoyo del Concurso de Creación Artística 2024 de la Dirección de Artes y Cultura de la Vicerrectoría de Investigación UC y el patrocinio de la Escuela de Arte UC.Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.     Use of Hansen solubility parameters to select supercritical carbon dioxide cosolvents for improved extraction selectivity: Case study on green tea decaffeination

    This study explores the selective decaffeination of green tea using supercritical (SC) CO 2 modified with ethanol and/or water as cosolvents based on experimental data in eight manuscripts in literature. We analyzed the solubility trends of caffeine (data from three literature sources) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) (data from a single source) using the Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) model to evaluate the solute-solvent interactions through the distance parameter R. We identified that the highest selectivity (favoring caffeine removal and EGCg retention) occurred at 70 ◦ extraction C and ≥25 MPa using pure CO 2 and hypothesized that the addition of water facilitated substrate swelling and improved inner mass transfer. Ethanol showed limited benefits at higher pressures. Data for operational solubility were more in line with actual solubility than apparent solubility, although both were still dependent on substrate-solute interactions. Solubility measurements revealed a significant scatter in the data, particularly for caffeine in water- and/or ethanol-modified CO 2 , underscoring the need for better experimentally derived data. Despite these challenges, HSP-based approaches effectively identified conditions that maximized selective decaffeination while preserving EGCg content

    Development of detailed kinetic models of Βeta-Carotene production in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains

    Tesis (Master of Science in Engineering)--Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2025El β-caroteno es un pigmento con alta relevancia comercial en varias industrias gracias a sus propiedades antioxidantes. Sin embargo, los métodos actuales de producción son poco atractivos para el consumo humano, por lo que la ingeniería metabólica se ha presentado como una alternativa. No obstante, los factores que limitan los rendimientos de producción no son bien entendidos. Una herramienta para poder guiar el diseño racional de microorganismos modificados genéticamente han sido los modelos de conjuntos. A diferencia de modelos cinéticos tradicionales, estos capturan la incertidumbre de la dinámica intracelular sin sacrificar información termodinámica, regulatoria y mecánica. El desafío es seleccionar un marco de trabajo que efectivamente describa el comportamiento cinético del sistema y de nuevas perspectivas de su funcionamiento. En este trabajo se construyeron modelos cinéticos de conjuntos para la vía metabólica del mevalonato que precede la síntesis de carotenoides para poder entender y mejorar la producción de β-caroteno. Se generaron datos transcriptómicos y fluxómicos de cultivos en quimiostatos para tres cepas recombinantes de Saccharomyces cerevisiae a 2 tasas de dilución. La regulación y los mecanismos de la red fueron obtenidos de literatura. Esta información llevó a la evaluación de diferentes estructuras de modelos que capturan distintos niveles de complejidad cinética. Modelos sujetos a una condición de referencia termodinámicamente factible fueron muestreados y luego seleccionados para poder representar mejor múltiples condiciones experimentales. Partículas de modelos que incluían regulación enzimática y mecanismos promiscuos simularon con mayor exactitud condiciones experimentales. Los modelos fueron investigados para identificar prometedoras intervenciones genéticas usando análisis de control metabólico. Finalmente, se simularon los conjuntos para predecir el estado de la red bajo condiciones de producción convenientes, resultando en valioso conocimiento para optimización futura. En general, los modelos desarrollados profundizan el entendimiento del metabolismo de β-caroteno en levaduras, y son un precedente para estrategias ingenieriles racionales.FONDECYT Iniciacion; No. 11190871FONDEQUI

    Climate Change, Health, and Migration in LAC

    This chapter examines the interconnectedness of climate change, health, and migration in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). A comprehensive literature review identified severe and disproportionate consequences of climate change on the health of migrants, with major impacts on vulnerable mobile groups such as indigenous peoples, children, women, and the LGBTI+ community. We analyzed the consequences of infectious diseases, such as vector-borne and neglected diseases, as well as non-communicable diseases and mental health. The findings highlight the urgent need to generate evidence on climate-induced migration at sub-regional and national level and to address the vulnerability of marginalized groups that contribute the least to greenhouse gas emissions, a matter of climate justice. Additionally, there is a need for further research on the health impacts of climate change on migrants in LAC, including those that migrate for non-climate-related reasons. These knowledge and action gaps underscore the importance of designing tailored health policies that ensure to reduce the vulnerability of migrants to health threats

    Measurements of WH and ZH production with Higgs boson decays into bottom quarks and direct constraints on the charm Yukawa coupling in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A study of the Higgs boson decaying into bottom quarks (H → b b ¯ ) and charm quarks (H → c c ¯ ) is performed, in the associated production channel of the Higgs boson with a W or Z boson, using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. The individual production of WH and ZH with H → b b ¯ is established with observed (expected) significances of 5.3 (5.5) and 4.9 (5.6) standard deviations, respectively. Differential cross-section measurements of the gauge boson transverse momentum within the simplified template cross-section framework are performed in a total of 13 kinematical fiducial regions. The search for the H → c c ¯ decay yields an observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level of 11.5 (10.6) times the Standard Model prediction. The results are also used to set constraints on the charm coupling modifier, resulting in |κc| < 4.2 at 95% confidence level. Combining the H → b b ¯ and H → c c ¯ measurements constrains the absolute value of the ratio of Higgs-charm and Higgs-bottom coupling modifiers (|κc/κb|) to be less than 3.6 at 95% confidence level

    Inhibition of the formation of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) and 2-amino-3,8-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) by phenolics in model systems and beef patties

    The comparative inhibition of the formation of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) and 2-amino-3,8-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) by phenolics in both model systems and beef patties was studied to better understand the protective role of these compounds. Model systems were selected to produce PhIP and MeIQx by carbonyl-amine reactions. Obtained results showed that their formation was inhibited up to 100 % by assayed phenolics. Among simple phenolics, m-diphenols were usually more effective than o-diphenols, and MeIQx was better inhibited than PhIP because m-diphenols both produce the Strecker degradation of amino acids to a lower extent than o-diphenols, and trap acrolein (responsible for MeIQx formation) better than phenylacetaldehyde (responsible for PhIP formation). When complex phenolics were assayed, other groups also contributed to the observed protective function. However, relative inhibitions of both compounds in model systems and beef patties were correlated, therefore suggesting that the formation of PhIP and MeIQx also occurs in beef patties by carbonyl-amine reactions

    LiDAR and GPR Data Reveal The Holocene Evolution of a Strandplain in a Tectonically Active Coast

    This study investigates the Holocene evolution of the Laraquete-Carampangue strandplain (LCS) on the tectonically active coast of south-central Chile using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and LiDAR data. Laraquete-Carampangue strandplain (LCS), on the tectonically active coast of south-central Chile, is a rare accretionary feature in a region dominated by rocky shorelines and limited sediment supply. LiDAR-derived digital elevation model reveals a complex geomorphology comprising 52 beach ridges, aeolian dunes, and fluvial paleochannels, while GPR radargrams uncover marine and aeolian facies influenced by past seismic and climatic events. We interpret these units in the frame of past seismic and climatic events. Our geomorphological and stratigraphic findings suggest that the strandplain progradation was driven by relative sea-level changes associated with past seismic cycles and Holocene climate change. We propose that the transition from drier to humid conditions in the late Holocene triggered the onset of dune formation at the end of the Little Ice Age. This integrated approach highlights the interplay of tectonic and climatic forcings in shaping coastal landforms, offering insights into their long-term response to environmental change

    Did you do something today, or did you solely play? Barriers and facilitators for the use of play in early childhood educational contexts

    © 2025 TACTYC.Despite the pivotal role of playing in children’s developmental areas, current evidence indicates that its use in Pre-kindergarten (PreK) and Kindergarten (K) is scarce. In these levels, children are encouraged to develop paper-and-pen activities, although there is agreement that learning achievement at these ages should be aimed at playing with their peers. Following a qualitative approach, this study urgently analyses facilitators and barriers to implementing play in schools. Twelve Chilean Early Childhood Teachers (PreK and K) were asked about the features and conditions of playing in schools through a semi-structured interview. The availability of materials and planning lessons were reported as the facilitators of playing. In contrast, the excess of schooling at this level, pressures from the educational system, and parents and teachers conceptions about playing emerged as barriers to its use in classroom settings.     Este libro está destinado a estudiantes de publicidad y a los jóvenes que están considerando la publicidad como una opción profesional. Reúne parte del conocimiento y la reflexión de profesores de la Facultad de Comunicaciones UC, y de algunos representantes de entidades gremiales, sobre los más diversos temas relativos a la disciplina. Desde qué es la publicidad y qué es una campaña, hasta cómo definir y estudiar una marca, cómo entender a las audiencias y de qué maneras dialoga la publicidad con el storytelling y la ética. En ese sentido, esta obra aspira a ser un libro de cabecera, que acompañe a los estudiantes durante todo su proceso de formación. Además, buscando representar el carácter dinámico del proceso publicitario, el libro invita al lector a intervenirlo en ciertos espacios, gracias a su diseño y composición.
