    Gritty or Flexible: Which Is a Better Predictor of Academic Success?

    In any classroom, there are clear differences in the ways students learn and respond to challenges. Growth mindset, the belief that intelligence is malleable and can be improved through hard work (Dweck, 2008), has been shown to influence response to challenging problems. Another quality associated with the response to challenges is grit. Grit is defined as the tendency to sustain perseverance and passion for challenging long-term goals (Duckworth & Gross, 2014). Consequently both growth mindset and grit are implicated in problem solving. However, it is unclear whether either one is associated with executive functioning. 61 college-aged students completed the Growth Mindset Questionnaire (Dweck, 2008), a short Grit Scale (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly, 2007), two Sudoku puzzles (one easy, one hard, with the order counterbalanced), and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST, to assess executive functioning). We found that grit was associated with more correct responses and fewer errors on the WCST. When participants completed the easy Sudoku puzzle before the hard Sudoku puzzle, growth mindset was associated with performance on the hard puzzle. When participants completed the hard Sudoku puzzle before the easy Sudoku puzzle, grit was associated with performance on the hard puzzle

    Improving Strength Properties of Paper Utilizing Mycelia Fungus

    Alternatives to the traditional sack grade of paper used for grocery bags was investigated for use in the commercial market. This project investigated the use of mycelium in conjunction with wood-based pulps to produce a structurally enhanced paper sheet. The study included creating and testing a fibrous sheet containing a network of mycelium. Three mycelium types were used: Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum), Pearl (Pleurotus Ostreatus var. Columbus), and Enoki (Flammulina Velutipes). All three require similar growth conditions but have different growth patterns. Three major trials were run, providing the mycelium with different growth conditions and medium. The first was a simple inoculation. The second was an inoculation of filter paper that was then stored in petri dishes to help reduce the mold growth discovered in the first trial. And the third was an inoculation of pulp slurries that were left to grow before being converted into small sheets. The slurry samples were made with both bleached and unbleached pulp to see if the type of pulp affected the growth. The mechanical properties of the developed materials were evaluated and compared to control samples of each pulp medium. Testing of the mycelium sheets was minimal because of poor growth, mold buildup, and an insubstantial number of samples per trial. Visual inspection under a microscope with 2x magnification and low angle light revealed areas of shiny, hairlike tendrils, protruding off the surface. In some cases, the tendrils appeared to grow over dark mold spots. Under visual inspection only, Pearl had the most clear and substantial growth. After visual inspection, the sheets were tested mechanically in hopes of more sufficient data; the grammage and tensile strength were measured. Strength comparisons were separated based on the inoculation method--inoculated onto pre-formed sheets or added to pulp slurry. The collected data indicated that Reishi grown on bleached pulp was the strongest. In general, inoculated samples of pulp turned out stronger than the original or plain sheets for bleached pulp and weaker for unbleached pulp

Q-methodology - a hybrid of qualitative and quantitative research techniques - is a systematic study of subjectivity that enables researches to understand user's beliefs or attitudes about particular issues. This workshop will train librarians to utilize Q-methodology through hands-on activities. Librarians will learn tangible skills that they can use to assess services, collections, and initiatives at their home institutions

    Preservation Outreach Through Non-Traditional Instruction and Engagement

    This poster will present outreach initiatives undertaken by the library’s preservation department to promote library preservation among students and patrons. In collaboration with special collections, the preservation librarian has lead several instruction sessions for various classes within the university’s art department. The sessions focus on bookbinding and book structure through the perspective of book repair. The success of these sessions has lead to a regular schedule of classes with multiple art department faculty. Based on feedback from these sessions, the department held several public events in order to reach a wider student population. Events included setting up book repair stations in various high traffic areas of the library, where passing students could observe book repairs being performed. The department also sponsored a book arts event, in which students observed book repair and book binding demonstrations. This poster will discuss the collaborative process and outcomes of these initiatives

    Joining forces with Faculty to Foster Information Literacy Best Practices in the Classroom

    Faculty often are frustrated by the quality of student research, including low scholarly resource use and lack of evaluation skills. Miami University (Oxford, OH) has created a faculty learning community (comprised of both faculty and librarians) to explore the above concerns during the course of an academic year. During the first semester, faculty discovered the information literacy skills of their students via survey tools, focus groups, and class observation. Disturbed by the results, faculty began work on a “best practices” list for bringing information literacy skills into the classroom. This poster will detail the process, successes, and future prospects for this project
