Productive and Social Engagement following Driving Cessation: A Couple-Based Analysis
Drawing on interdependence theory, this study examined the cross-spouse impact of driving cessation on productive (work, formal volunteering, and informal volunteering) and social engagement of older couples age 65+ using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (1998 – 2010; N = 1,457 couples). Multilevel modeling results indicate that driving cessation reduced husbands’ productive and social engagement, and wives’ productive engagement. Spousal driving cessation reduced husbands’ likelihood of working or formal volunteering, and wives’ likelihood of working or informal volunteering. The more time since spousal driving cessation, the less likely husbands were to work and the less likely wives were to formally volunteer. Results suggest the need for greater recognition of the impact of driving cessation on couples, rather than just individuals, as well as the need for enhanced services or rehabilitation efforts to maintain driving even among couples with one remaining driver
Assessment of a Broad-Based CCC “Get It Now” Program Implementation
We conducted a year-long pilot of the Copyright Clearance Center’s “Get It Now” rapid document delivery program. Get It Now is intended to supplement traditional library journal collections by providing rapid on-request electronic access to a deep body of journal literature, for a per article charge which is absorbed by the library. Our pilot project provided the service to all constituencies within our university community: undergraduate, graduate student, staff and faculty. This differs from many implementations which are limited to certain populations e.g. faculty-only. With a full year of data, we
assess whether this broad availability of service is sustainable financially with current resources; whether it makes sense from a collections development standpoint; who the major users are when the service is available to all; and what subject areas the requested articles predominate. Our general experience in setting up and managing the service is discussed
Transforming ghost-boxes: From abandonment to engaging community individuality
Since the 1960s, big-box stores have defined retail shopping for American suburbs. However, these
megastores are becoming abandoned at alarming rates due to economic decline and expansion.
Large retailers, such as Wal-Mart, are contributing to the presence of empty big-boxes across the
country. Big-box reuse is becoming more common. Communities still need to address the problem of
these vacancies. The abandonment of big-boxes in the suburbs affects communities because the
empty stores cause blight, reduced property values, loss in tax revenue, and decreases social
capital. As these big-boxes become abandoned, the communities need to find a solution to reuse
them that will be beneficial. Big-boxes are created for one purpose – retail. When these megastores
leave their old store to build a new superstore, there are legal constraints preventing competing
retailers from purchasing the property, which leads to issues for the city because it can sits empty
for years. The superstores are usually built near the old structure, leaving the city and its community
to find a solution for the unused space. This paper will look at several case studies on communities
that have found an alternative use for these “ghost-boxes”. How can big-box stores be re-adapted
for community needs? The growing presence of empty big-box stores across the U.S. is affecting
communities. As designers we need to address the scale and complexity of the problem to create
better community engagement through public connections.
Beginning with a former big-box in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, an active community of about 60,000
people explores the possibilities of redesigning a big-box building to a library. The building is
transformed into an enjoyable place where people can interact. It also creates a place for the
surrounding neighborhoods to connect with one another. The ghost-boxes provide design challenges
to break the typical structure, such as, bringing in natural light that would welcome the public. These
challenges offer an alternative to the windowless, concrete, one-story structure of a typical big-box
store. This type of project would encourage the community to grow and be an example for other
communities such as Austin, Minnesota and Olathe, Missouri
Cryobiology of the freeze-tolerant gall fly Eurosta solidaginis: Overwintering energetics and heat shock proteins.
The goldenrod gall fly Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tehritidae) ranges from the southern U.S. northward into Canada. The larvae overwinters with a ball gall on the stem of goldenrod Solidago spa. The galls often extend above the snowpack, exposing the larva to a wide range of environmental extremes in winter. This species has received extensive attention as a freeze-tolerent insect model. A seasonal study of the overwintering bioenergetics of an Ohio, USA, population revealed marked decreases in body weight, lipid and total caloric content in October and November when environmental temperatures were the highest. Overwintering larvae produced heat-shock proteins in response to high-temperature exposure. However, unlike other insects E. solidaginis does not appear to synthesize head-shock proteins in response to low-temperature exposure
Identification of ice nucleating active Pseudomonas fluorescens strains for biological control of overwintering Colorado potato beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).
Laboratory studies were conducted to identify ice-nucleating active bacterial strains able to elevate the supercooling point, the temperature at which freezing is initiated in body fluids, of Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), and to persist in their gut. Adult beetles fed ice-nucleating active strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. putida, or P. syringae at 10(6) or 10(3) bacterial cells per beetle had significantly elevated supercooling points, from -4.5 to -5.7 degrees C and from -5.2 to -6.6 degrees C, respectively, immediately after ingestion. In contrast, mean supercooling point of untreated control beetles was -9.2 degrees C. When sampled at 2 and 12 wk after ingestion, only beetles fed P. fluorescens F26-4C and 88-335 still had significantly elevated supercooling points, indicating that these strains of bacteria were retained. Furthermore, beetle supercooling points were comparable to those observed immediately after ingestion, suggesting that beetle gut conditions were favorable not only for colonization but also for expression of ice-nucleating activity by these two strains. The results obtained from exposure to a single, low dose of either bacterial strain also show that a minimum amount of inoculum is sufficient for establishment of the bacterium in the gut. Persistence of these bacteria in Colorado potato beetles long after ingestion was also confirmed using a polymerase chain reaction technique that detected ice-nucleating active bacteria by virtue of their ina genes. Application of these ice-nucleating active bacteria to elevate the supercooling point of this freeze-intolerant insect pest could significantly reduce their winter survival, thereby reducing local populations and, consequently, crop damage
Survival and physiological responses of hatchling Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) to submergence in normoxic and hypoxic water under simulated winter conditions.
Abstract Overwintering habits of hatchling Blanding’s turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are unknown. To determine whether these turtles are able to survive winter in aquatic habitats, we submerged hatchlings in normoxic (155 mmHg Po2) and hypoxic (6 mmHg Po2) water at 4°C, recording survival times and measuring changes in key physiological variables. For comparison, we simultaneously studied hatchling softshell (Apalone spinifera) and snapping (Chelydra serpentina) turtles, which are known to overwinter in aquatic habitats. In normoxic water, C. serpentina and A. spinifera survived to the termination of the experiment (76 and 77 d, respectively). Approximately one‐third of the E. blandingii died during 75 d of normoxic submergence, but the cause of mortality was unclear. In hypoxic water, average survival times were 6 d for A. spinifera, 13 d for E. blandingii, and 19 d for C. serpentina. Mortality during hypoxic submergence was probably caused by metabolic acidosis, which resulted from accumulated lactate. Unlike the case with adult turtles, our hatchlings did not increase plasma calcium and magnesium, nor did they sequester lactate within the shell. Our results suggest that hatchling E. blandingii are not particularly well suited to hibernation in hypoxic aquatic habitats
