The factor of the business development of the Japan Braille Library which made a fresh start after the war: In the Business Reports from 1948-1958

    Get PDF
This report investigated the factors in the business development of the Japan Braille Library after it resumed operations after the war. The main factor was “volunteer translators into Braille” which this study is notable for being the first to clarify this point, which is determined from the heading “Volunteer Copying by Blind Readers” in the library’s business reports for 1948-1958.departmental bulletin pape

Rubric Design and Development for English Speaking Practice and Performance in the First-year University Classroom

    Get PDF
As part of an ongoing action research project researchers collaborated on the creation, administration, and evaluation of a formative speaking assessment tool. A primary element of this tool was an analytic rubric to help first- and second year university students across departments practice and improve their speaking skills. The impetus of this research emerged from the results of previous speaking assessment studies involving second-year students. Though the previous learning outcomes appeared to have been achieved on average, the evaluation results of the second-year students tended to range around the high end of the grading rubric. This prompted researchers to have a closer look at the most recent rubric in use and improve its clarity, comprehensibility and transparency. The assessment tool and rubric integrated clear learning objectives, independent practice, peer evaluation and transparent instructor evaluation enabling researchers to focus on supporting student learning and confidence. The research questions were: 1) How did editing and revising the rubric affect student results? 2) How did editing and revising the rubric increase student confidence? This study took a mixed method approach where data from student grades and survey results were collected and analyzed. The data from the assessments showed that after introducing the newest version of the rubric student grades showed less extreme off shoots and were centered around the expected results. In addition, survey responses were positive regarding the rubric’s efficacy in supporting students’ English language speaking confidence.departmental bulletin pape

The effects of extremeness aversion, financial self-efficacy, and time discounting on decisions regarding student loan amounts: A survey of high school students

    Get PDF
Almost half of Japanese university students use student loans to fund their university education; unfortunately, there is little chance of learning about the financial system of student loans at school or at home. Therefore, students borrow as much money as possible without seriously considering how much money will need to be paid back in the future. Coupled with the low economic growth rate, this has become a major social problem. This study focuses on the three concepts of extremeness aversion, financial self-efficacy, and time discounting and examines the effect these factors have on the amount of student loans high school students plan to take out using a questionnaire survey conducted in the fall of 2021 (N=143). Multiple regression analyses were performed to identify the factors influencing the student loan amounts. We confirmed that higher extremeness aversion was associated with an average loan amount and that time discounting had a statistically significantly positive effect on the amount of student loans. However, we did not find a statistically significant effect of financial self-efficacy on the amount of student loans. Finally, we discuss future research directions.departmental bulletin pape

Shin-Etsu Kiko and Utako Shimoda’s Awareness of the Ancestors: Thoughts on the Erection of Tojo Kindai’s Inscription

    Get PDF
The travel journal Yomogimugura was compiled as Kosetsu Sosho, Vol. 1, A Collection of Utako Shimoda’s Handpicked Writings (November 1932, Jissen Girls’ School Publishing). It contains 20 travelogues and essays written by Shimoda. The book contains Shin-Etsu Kiko and Shin-Etsu Kiko Koki (postscript). These include hinamino nikki (journal), a set of diaries covering the 30 days from August 9 to September 7, 1899. Shin-Etsu Kiko comprises 80 tanka poems (58 by Shimoda and 22 by others), while Shin-Etsu Kiko Koki includes 26 (22 by Shimoda and four by others). Although researchers occasionally mention Shin- Etsu Kiko in Shimoda’s biographies and other similar materials, no discussion has focused on the writing. This paper analyzes the work to explore Shimoda’s whereabouts and practices at the time of the founding of the Imperial Women’s Association and considers her awareness of the ancestors underlying it.departmental bulletin pape
