Specific Aspects of Song Dynasty Arhats Based on Japanese Materials and Painting Materials: Focusing on the Relationship Between Ritual Spaces, Ritual Tools, and Esoteric Rituals
Get PDF聖僧信仰の一部である羅漢信仰は、唐代に萌芽し、五代十国に展開をみせ、宋代に全盛期を迎えた。「羅漢供」として知られる羅漢供養の儀礼に関する資料は断片的なものしか現存していないが、こうした文字資料や絵画資料の断片を博捜していけば、羅漢供の実相を把握することも可能である。
本稿では、はじめに羅漢信仰を形成する要素のうち、羅漢が住まうとされる天台山の石橋と、石橋で行われた羅漢供に言及する文献を検討した。これを踏まえ、大徳寺伝来「五百羅漢図」などの絵画資料や、平信範（一一一二～一一八七）の『兵範記』の羅漢供に関する記述などを併せ考察したところ、宋代の羅漢供を行う際に、儀礼空間の東西に羅漢図を配置すること、供物は羅漢の人数分
を用意すること、法具の色は朱色が重視されることがわかった。また、入宋僧・成尋（一〇一一～一〇八一）が天台山において、密教的な「鈴杵真言」で羅漢の供養を行うこと、羅漢供と密教星供の代表的な供物がいずれも茶であることから、羅漢信仰と密教信仰との関係性についても試論した。The belief in arhats 羅漢, which forms part of the broader veneration of holy monks 聖僧, originated during the Tang dynasty, developed further through the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, and reached its peak during the Song dynasty. The ritual of offering to arhats, known as arhat rituals 羅漢供, has left only fragmentary evidence from the Song dynasty. Nonetheless, by examining these
surviving written and pictorial materials, it is possible to reconstruct the actual practices and customs associated with arhat rituals.
This article begins by reviewing literature related to the stone bridge 石橋 on Mount Tiantai 天台山, which is believed to be the residence of the arhats, as well as the arhat rituals performed there, elements central to the belief in arhats. Building on this foundation, the study employs pictorial materials such as the“ Five Hundred
Arhats Paintings” 五百羅漢図 preserved at Daitokuji Temple 大徳寺, alongside Taira no Nobunori’s 平信範(1112 － 1187) Hyōhanki 兵範記, which provides detailed descriptions of arhats. By comparing these resources, this article explores specific aspects of arhat rituals, and concludes that during the Song dynasty, when arhat rituals were conducted, arhat paintings were placed on the east and west sides of
the ritual space, offerings were prepared in accordance with the number of arhats, and vermilion was emphasized as the color of the ritual implements. Furthermore, it examines the correlation between arhat beliefs and esoteric Buddhist practices, highlighting that the monk Jōjin 成尋(1011 － 1081), during his travels to Song China，performed offerings to arhats on Mount Tiantai employing esoteric ritual instruments such as the Vajra Bell 鈴 and Vajra Pestle 杵, as well as mantras 真言. This research also underscores the role of tea, a common offering in both arhat rituals and esoteric star offerings, to further elucidate the relationship between arhat beliefs and esoteric Buddhist traditions.departmental bulletin pape

Foreign disease in the Hawaiian archipelago brought fear, suffering, an illumination on racism, and in the case of the Native Hawaiians, depopulation. Venereal diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea, cholera, smallpox, measles, and Hansen’s disease contributed to the dismantling and ultimately the colonization of the Hawaiian Islands.
