(Case Study Report) Analytical Study of Materials Used in Suzuki Harunobu's Luxurious Picture Books: A Case Study of the Fourth Volume of "Ehon Seiro Bijin Awase" Held by Chiba City Museum of Art
To clarify the materials utilized in color woodblock-printed picture books by the ukiyo-e artist Suzuki Harunobu,we investigated the paper and color materials employed in the fourth volume of Ehon Seiro Bijin Awase from the collection of the Chiba City Museum of Art.This study leveraged non-invasive approaches, encompassing X-ray fluorescence analysis and reflectance spectroscopy. The findings validated that safflower was predominantly harnessed for the red areas, orpiment, and fluorescent organic pigments for the yellow areas, aobana(dayflower)for the blue areas, and a mixture of saffl ower and aobana for the purple areas.Orpiment and indigo were found in the green areas; however, the blue pigment could not be identified in regions with a dull yellow‒green tint.Furthermore,a comparison with a previous study conducted by the Museum of Fine Arts,Boston, highlighted inconsistencies in the identifi ed color materials for the red and dull yellow‒green regions.Potential reasons for these discrepancies encompass variations in survey site selection, errors in data analysis,or distinctions in the printing dates, which may have contributed to variations in the materials employed.Future research, involving the shared disclosure of survey sites and measurement data, along with a comprehensive reassessment of the findings,is anticipated to yield more precise conclusions.departmental bulletin pape
Paper Used in "The Tale of Genji's" Ancient Genealogy: Observations Using a High-Resolution Digital Microscope
This research reports on the surface analysis of nine ancient genealogy sheets from "The Tale of Genji," housed at Jissen Women's University, conducted utilizing a high-resolution electron microscope. The study is divided into three parts. The first stage details the methodology employed to obtain analytical data for the paper survey, which serves as the core focus of this study. The second facet provides a comprehensive examination of the "Genji Genealogy Sheet" written by Kujo Yoshitsune, believed to be the oldest of the nine sheets, based on bibliographic, textual, and paper observations. Finally, the third phase, presents facsimiles and survey fi ndings for the remaining eight sheets, supplemented with images where necessary to support the anlysis and conclusions.departmental bulletin pape
The Swabian Dialect: An Exploration of Usage and Attitudes
German is a language rich in regional dialects, with significant variations in usage across the German-speaking countries. These dialects can be so distinct that speakers from one region might have considerable difficulties understanding those from another. Each dialect reflects historical, geographical, and cultural influences, creating a vibrant linguistic landscape. Dialects are not only part of everyday communication in many regions but also an important part of regional identity and heritage. It has been widely reported that many German language dialects are in varying degrees of steady decline, raising concerns about their long-term survival. In this paper, I examine the answers to questions in a survey I distributed to individuals living in and around the town of Munderkingen in the Swabian-Alb region of Baden-Württemberg, focusing on the respondents’ use of the Swabian dialect in various social contexts, the impact of social interactions on dialect usage, their perceptions of their own dialect, intergenerational differences, and their attitudes toward Swabian. The aim of my study is to help provide insights into the factors affecting the survival of the Swabian dialect and to contribute to discussions on the preservation of linguistic diversity within Swabian-speaking communities.departmental bulletin pape
