The Relationship Between Interoception, ACEs, and Emotional Processes in IBD

    No full text
Emerging evidence highlights the crucial role of interoception—the ability to perceive internal bodily sensations—in shaping psychological and somatic health. This narrative review explores the relationship between interoception and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and its relevance in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs), a group of chronic immune-mediated conditions. ACEs have been shown to compromise interoceptive development, contributing to emotional dysregulation, altered brain-body communication, and increased vulnerability to both mental and physical disorders. In patients with IBDs, interoceptive impairments manifest not only in physiological hypersensitivity to visceral stimuli but also in the subjective interpretation of these signals, often influenced by emotional distress and trauma history . These interoceptive dysfunctions are associated with structural and functional brain alterations, particularly in areas involved in emotional and bodily processing, such as the insular and somatosensory cortices. The review underscores the bidirectional communication along the gut-brain axis and its modulation by psychological factors, suggesting that interoceptive dysfunctions may serve as a key mechanism linking early trauma, emotional suffering, and chronic gastrointestinal symptoms. Integrating interoception-informed interventions in the treatment of IBDs could improve emotional regulation and enhance patients’ quality of life.notReviewedothe

The appreciative qualitative interview: A research method for empowering people

    No full text
This article introduces the Appreciative Qualitative Interview, a qualitative research technique grounded in Appreciative Inquiry, Social Constructionism, and the narrative turn in psychology. The Appreciative Qualitative Interview emphasizes positive, strength-based questioning to elicit more empowering personal and collective narratives from participants in qualitative research studies. The aim is to uncover and amplify participants' successes, strengths, and aspirations, thereby facilitating a more generative, enabling, and transformative research process. This tutorial article provides a detailed interviewing blueprint for conducting Appreciative Qualitative Interviews, including opening, core, and closing questions. While acknowledging the challenges of overemphasizing positivity, the article highlights the value of this approach within an action research and social constructionist epistemology.peerReviewedpublishedVersio

    No full text
The CorBel Scale is a self-assessment instrument for capturing the 97 nuances of the CorBel model, the most differentiated model on beliefs to date. The original German version contains 291 items that reliably capture the 97 nuances of the CorBel model with 3 items per nuance. In addition, three short versions (CorBel-101, CorBel-60, CorBel-20) and an English version were developed. Reliability: For all 97 nuances homogeneity in the sense of Omega(total) could be confirmed (median at .82). Validity: Content validity can be assumed for the items due to the high specificity of the nuances. One-dimensionality in the sense of factorial validity could be confirmed for all nuances.reviewedpublishedVersio

    No full text

Dataset for: What is the effect of alarmist media and radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure on salivary cortisol and non-specific symptoms?

    No full text
While there is consistent evidence that the symptoms reported by people who experience Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance attributed to Electromagnetic Fields (IEI-EMF) are closely associated with a nocebo effect, and that alarmist media reports may contribute to this nocebo effect, some methodological criticisms remain to be resolved. This study aimed to replicate previous findings and determine whether viewing an alarmist media report and being openly exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) could induce a salivary cortisol response. 144 participants were randomly assigned to watch either an alarmist or control video before completing an open-label provocation trial where they were either exposed or not exposed to RF-EMF. Pre-existing personality, RF-EMF risk perception (pre- and post- video), symptoms and salivary cortisol were assessed. Consistent with previous studies, participants who were aware that they were being exposed had increased symptoms compared to participants who were aware they were not being exposed. However, the current study failed to replicate an effect of viewing an alarmist media report and being openly exposed to RF-EMF on symptoms and failed to identify an effect of on salivary cortisol. This suggests the RF-EMF nocebo effect may be influenced more by cognitions than underlying physiological processes.unknow

Supplementary materials for: Advancing Transparency and Reproducibility: Criteria for Documenting Research Synthesis Processes and Data

    No full text
This study addresses the adaptation of research synthesis standards in social, educational, and psychological sciences. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive documentation and adherence to reporting guidelines and FAIR principles to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and data reuse. Existing guidelines like PRISMA and FAIR guide documentation but lack specifics on making methodological data accessible. The study aims to develop a set of criteria to document review processes and data, enhancing reproducibility in psychology and education. Using a sample of 100 systematic reviews within these disciplines, it evaluates the adherence to these criteria. The results will reveal the extent of documentation rigor, identify missing elements, and inform recommendations for improving research synthesis documentation. The study's findings will contribute to standardizing synthesis documentation, promoting transparency and collaboration in the scientific community.unknownunknow

Code for: A cross-sectional study of the completeness of preregistrations by psychological authors from German-speaking institutions

    No full text
Preregistering confirmatory research aims at reducing researchers’ degrees of freedom and increasing transparency to ultimately increase replicability. Yet, the extent to which preregistrations actually achieve these goals depends on the completeness of a preregistration. To scrutinize the completeness of current preregistrations, we coded all preregistrations mentioned in journal articles published by psychologists from institutions in German-speaking countries in 2020 as to whether they contain six procedural specifications: (1) the hypothesized pattern of results, (2) the measures, (3) planned sample size, (4) exclusion criteria, (5) planned analyses to test the hypotheses, and (6) a timestamp. In addition, we consider transparency related elements. Our results show that the completeness of preregistration was neither associated with the journal’s Impact Factor nor its Transparency and Openness Promotion Factor. Approximately, half of the preregistrations contained all six procedural specifications. Hence, in line with previous research, our findings indicate that when considering publications from diverse subdisciplines of psychology, there was room for improvement regarding the completeness of preregistrations in psychology. We discuss steps to improve preregistration completeness.Code for: Hahn, L., Glöckner, A., Gollwitzer, M., Hellmann, J., Lange, J., Schindler, S., & Sassenberg, K. (2025). Exploring basic psychological need satisfaction and relationship quality as protective factors of mental well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic

    No full text
COVID-19’s global impact on mental health has been profound. To better understand factors that mitigate effects of stress, particularly during quarantine periods, this study examined roles of basic psychological need satisfaction and relationship quality in mental well-being in the context of COVID-19-related stress. Conducted from March to May 2020, this online questionnaire research involved 805 individuals in romantic relationships (mean age = 37.88 ± 12.50 years; 70.19% female). Path analysis revealed that higher mental well-being was associated with satisfaction of basic psychological needs, positive relationship quality, and lower COVID-19-related stress. Higher autonomy satisfaction was linked to lower COVID-19-related stress, whereas increased relatedness satisfaction and better relationship quality predicted higher COVID-19-related stress. The findings implicate complex associations among basic psychological need satisfaction, relationship quality, and mental well-being. While better relationship experiences might even heighten perceived stress during a global crisis, they simultaneously function as protective factors for overall mental health.peerReviewedpublishedVersio
