Perceptual Strength, Concreteness, Imagibility, Context Availability, Age of Acquisition, Familiarity, Emotional valence, and Arousal Ratings for 2100 Serbian Nouns and their Effect on Visual Lexical Decision Latencies

    No full text
In this norming study, for 2100 Serbian nouns, we collected ratings on familiarity, concreteness, imageability, age of acquisition, context availability, emotional valence, arousal, the possibility of experiencing a concept on each of the five sensory modalities (visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile), and the extent of the actual experience for the same concept. Based on the sensory ratings, the integrative perceptual richness measures were derived: maximal perceptual strength, modality exclusivity, number of modalities, the sum of ratings, Euclidian vector length, and Minkowski 3 distance. The principal component analysis revealed different factor structure for the perceptual strength measures based on the possible and the real experience. All modalities except the auditory grouped into one component for a possible experience. On the other hand, PCA analysis for the real experience ratings showed that the gustatory and olfactory modality migrated into a separate dimension, suggesting that concepts are less multimodal and described mainly by visual/tactile olfactory/gustatory experience. Finally, we conducted a lexical decision over the entire data set of words. Gustatory, olfactory and tactile strength significantly accelerated word processing when estimates were based on the possible experience. When estimates were grounded on real experience, auditory strength inhibited processing additionally. Analysis of the perceptual richness measures showed that the modality exclusivity was the only measure with the consistent inhibitory effect in all analyses. Because the high values of modality exclusivity indicated the unimodality's tendency, our results showed that words perceived with only one modality took more time to process.notReviewedothe

Risk and protective factors associated with perinatal psychopathology in mothers and fathers: Registered report of an umbrella review of meta-analyses

    No full text
Background: This study protocol outlines an umbrella review of meta-analyses to assess risk and protective factors associated with perinatal psychopathology in mothers and fathers. Perinatal mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are prevalent, yet comprehensive reviews of contributory factors remain limited. Identifying key risk and protective factors is essential for improving interventions and clinical care during the transition to parenthood. Method: We will conduct a systematic search using EBSCOhost and the Cochrane Library. Eligible studies will include quantitative meta-analyses of observational research published in peer-reviewed journals. Narrative reviews, single studies, protocols, books, book chapters, theses, and grey literature will be excluded. Study overlap will be managed by selecting the meta-analysis with the largest number of primary studies when multiple meta-analyses exist for the same PICO combination. Statistical analyses will calculate summary effect estimates, confidence intervals, heterogeneity, and small study effects. The quality of included studies will be assessed using AMSTAR 2. To establish a hierarchy of evidence, the credibility of each risk and protective factor will be rated as “convincing”, “highly suggestive”, “suggestive”, “weak”, and “not significant” in relation to its respective psychopathological outcome. Results: Relevant meta-analyses will be identified, and statistical analysis will determine effect sizes for risk and protective factors in relation to perinatal psychopathology in both mothers and fathers. Conclusion: This umbrella review will identify the most robust risk and protective factors for perinatal psychopathology, with implications for preventive interventions and clinical practice to better support parents during the transition to parenthood. This work has been financially supported by the Italian Ministry of University and Research within the PRIN-funded project “Prediction of psychopathological outcomes and parental reflective functioning based on perinatal risk factors: A machine learning quanti-qualitative longitudinal study on mothers and fathers” (Prot. 2022X37WMB).peerReviewedothe

Intervention of Snoezelen Rooms in reducing burnout among healthcare professionals: A pilot study

    No full text
Background: Burnout among healthcare professionals is a significant concern, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. This phenomenon adversely impacts the well-being of healthcare workers and compromises the quality of patient care. Effective interventions are needed to mitigate burnout and enhance the mental health of healthcare staff. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Snoezelen Rooms—multisensory environments designed to provide relaxation and stress relief—in reducing burnout among healthcare professionals. Methods: A sample of 20 healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, participated in this study. The participants had an average age of 44.19 years, and all were female with an average of 14 years of work experience. None of the participants were smokers or users of alcohol or drugs. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used to measure burnout levels before and after the intervention. Participants accessed the Snoezelen Rooms for 30-minute sessions twice a week over three months. These rooms were equipped with sensory devices such as bubble tubes, fiber optics, projectors, starry sky curtains, mirrors, sound and light walls, vibrating chairs, water beds, and aroma diffusers. Results: The analysis revealed a significant reduction in burnout levels among participants following the intervention. Emotional exhaustion scores decreased from 30.5 ± 6.2 to 20.1 ± 5.4, representing a 34.1% reduction (p<.001). Depersonalization scores dropped from 15.3 ± 4.7 to 10.4 ± 3.9, a reduction of 32.0% (p<.002). Additionally, personal accomplishment scores increased from 22.6 ± 5.3 to 28.9 ± 6.1, indicating a 27.9% improvement (p<.01). Conclusion: The use of Snoezelen Rooms proved to be an effective intervention for reducing burnout among healthcare professionals. The multisensory environments facilitated relaxation, reduced stress, and improved personal satisfaction. These findings suggest that integrating Snoezelen Rooms into healthcare settings could significantly enhance the well-being of medical staff and improve patient care quality. Further research is needed to confirm these results in larger and more diverse samples. Key words: Burnout; healthcare professionals; snoezelen room; stress reduction.peerReviewedpublishedVersio

Dataset for: Who engages in Citizen Science projects on urban wildlife ecology? Findings on participant groups from cluster analyses

    No full text
Citizen Science (CS) for nature sensing has gained popularity in recent years. Yet, little is known about the demographics of participants and to what extent they can be classified into specific participant groups. Knowing more about such groups could help attract, engage, and retain CS participants. Therefore, we aimed to identify distinctive participant groups in two ecological CS projects (N1 = 847, N2 = 223) and performed cluster analyses based on participants’ demographic data. The results revealed four clusters in each project: (1) All-Round Workers who were middle-aged, medium-educated, full-time or part-time employees, (2) Academic Employees who were middle-aged, highly educated, full-time or part-time employees, (3) Free-Timers who were medium-educated and non-employed, and (4) Academic Free-Timers who were highly educated and non-employed. Thus, participants of two different ecological CS projects could be classified into similar groups. The grouping of CS participants could, therefore, offer important new opportunities in CS research.unknow

Prognostic validity of aptitude tests for applicant selection for psychology studies

    No full text
Due to high popularity and limited capacities, German universities have to restrict access to psychology studies. In the interest of universities and students alike, the selected applicants should be the ones most likely to success in their studies. It has been shown that aptitude tests can predict study success together with the grades of the high school diploma or equivalent degrees. However, aptitude tests have only recently been introduced to the admission procedures of most public universities in Germany, and only partially been evaluated regarding their prognostic value for predicting study success. This retrospective longitudinal study investigates the relationship between test performance in an aptitude tests used for applicant selection and study success in the form of successful completion of studies and the Bachelor's degree grade at the Faculty of Applied Psychology at the private SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg. In addition to the final school grade, the constructs intelligence, written language competence and personal dimensions of the applicants of the class of 2015 were used as predictors, operationalized using the test procedures I-S-T 2000 R, D-PA, E-PA and a diagnostic interview. In addition to the final school grade, intelligence (I-S-T) and written language skills in German (D-PA) proved to be suitable predictors of academic success. In a linear regression, the D-PA results were able to explain variance in the bachelor's degree grade independent of the school grade, while the I-S-T results were able to predict successful completion of studies independent of the school grade in a logistic regression. The results indicate that intelligence and German language skills are predictors that, complementary and supplementary to the final school grade, can predict academic success in the subject of psychology at Bachelor level and should therefore be tested during the selection of applicants. In contrast, tests of domain knowledge, which are included in several other aptitude tests, do not seem to be strictly necessary to predict study success.notReviewedothe

Accompanying observation of the 5th follow-up survey in 2004 used during the sixth wave of the Berlin Aging Study. The multidisciplinary Berlin Aging Study (BASE) was conducted by the Research Group on Aging and Societal Development of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in collaboration with institutes and research centers belonging to the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. The study was initially directed by a steering committee consisting of the late Paul B. Baltes (chair), head of the BASE Psychology Unit, Karl Ulrich Mayer (vice-chair), head of the BASE Sociology and Social Policy Unit, Hanfried Helmchen, head of the BASE Psychiatry Unit, and Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen, head of the BASE Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Unit. The project was supported financially by several organizations including the German Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (1989–1991, 13 TA 011 + 13 TA 011/A) and the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth (1992–1998, 314-1722-102/9 + 314-1722-102/9a) as well as by the institutions involved. From 2008 to 2011, it was co-sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (01UW0808). The Center for Lifespan Psychology at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development has led the project since 2008 and Ulman Lindenberger has meanwhile become the speaker of BASE (see also https://www.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/research/research-centers/lip/projects/aging/base).BASE was established in 1989 to investigate questions about old and very old age from the joint and collaborative perspectives of four disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, sociology, and geriatrics/internal medicine (see Baltes et al., 1993, 2001). The initial goal of BASE (1990–1993) was to obtain extensive baseline information about old and very old age using a 14-session multidisciplinary Intensive Protocol covering older people’s mental and physical health, psychological functioning, and social and economic situation. The study design called for an age-by-sex stratified heterogeneous (locally representative) sample of 70- to over-100-year-olds. The central goal of the longitudinal study was to follow-up the core sample of participants who completed this Intensive Protocol. Extensive information about the baseline sample selectivity, assessment procedures, and cross-sectional findings are reported in Mayer and Baltes (1996; Baltes & Mayer, 1999; Baltes & Smith, 1997; Lindenberger et al., 1999).Begleitende Beobachtung der 5.
