Evaluating the standard error estimation of the Local Structural-After-Measurement (LSAM) approach in structural equation modeling [Author Accepted Manuscript]
Accurate estimation of standard errors (SEs) is essential in SEM as they quantify the uncertainty of parameter estimates, are fundamental to computing test statistics, and ensure robust population inferences. This study evaluated SEs within the Local Structural-After-Measurement (LSAM) framework, a two-step approach to SEM. Two simulation studies examined analytic and resampling-based SE methods under varying conditions, including normal and nonnormal data, different sample sizes, and both correct and misspecified models. The nonparametric bootstrap yielded near-unbiased SEs under nonnormality, even when models were misspecified, while the parametric bootstrap performed well under normal conditions with correct model specification. The analytic two-step method performed well under normal conditions but showed increased bias with nonnormal data and smaller samples. The robust two-step method reduced this bias in larger samples, though some underestimation remained in small-sample and misspecified conditions. To complement SE bias results, 90% coverage rates were assessed. Findings confirm LSAM’s capability for accurate SE estimation in challenging research contexts. The first author acknowledges the support provided by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).reviewedacceptedVersio

Perspectives from Peerspectives: Structured peer review training for early career researchers
Peer review is a vital part of academic publishing, yet most scientists receive little or no formal training in how to conduct it effectively. In this talk, we will explain why it is important to begin teaching both the theoretical foundations and the practical skills of peer review early in a scientist’s career. We will introduce Peerspectives, a semester-long, researcher-led peer review training course that partners with scholarly journals. This collaboration allows participants to contribute to real scientific peer review while earning academic credit. Originally designed for early-career researchers in the biomedical sciences, the course creates space for participants to critically examine the scientific publishing system and encourages them to apply what they have learned in their academic studies to evaluate research quality and reporting practices. By gaining a clearer understanding of what editors and reviewers value, participants also strengthen their own scientific writing and communication. We will share findings from our evaluation study of the program, highlight our train-the-trainer workshops and customizable teaching materials, and outline ongoing efforts to expand the course to other disciplines. On September 29th, 2025 Dr. Jessica L. Psychometric Validation of the Flourishing Scale (FS) in the Algerian Context
This study aims to validate the psychometric properties of the Flourishing Scale (FS) within the Algerian context, contributing to the understanding of psychological well-being in non-Western settings. Flourishing reflects an individual’s perception of leading a fulfilling and meaningful life, with optimal functioning across social, emotional, and psychological domains. Using a sample of 365 university students, the study evaluated the FS alongside the Satisfaction with Life Scale. EFA and CFA were conducted to examine the FS structure, along with internal consistency and validity assessments. The results demonstrated strong psychometric properties, confirming the scale’s unidimensionality, high internal consistency, and validity as a measure of flourishing in Algeria. Correlations with SWLS further reinforced its construct validity. The findings support the use of the FS in Algerian settings to assess psychological well-being. Future research should explore its applicability across diverse demographic groups and investigate its relationships with other constructs, such as resilience and work-life balance.reviewedacceptedVersio
No matter of trust: Retrieval of observationally acquired stimulus-response bindings occurs in interactions with both trustworthy and untrustworthy partners
Recent findings show that simply observing how another person responds to a stimulus is sufficient to create stimulus-response (SR) episodes, which can later be retrieved from memory to guide one’s own actions. However, this only occurs if the observed person is socially relevant for the observer. This social relevance can result from task demands (e.g., cooperation or competition) or the relationship between the interacting people. An essential component of successful social relationships, which should therefore also increase the social relevance of another person, is trust. In two online experiments we investigated whether trusting versus distrusting an interaction partner modulates observationally acquired SR binding and retrieval (oSRBR) effects. Trust was manipulated by a variation of the Investment Game. Interaction partners behaved either trustworthily or untrustworthily by keeping or violating a previous promise. After that, participants performed an online interactive color classification task to assess oSRBR effects. Both experiments yielded successful manipulation checks. Significant oSRBR effects emerged, but these were not modulated by trust. We discuss potential reasons underlying these findings, particularly whether and how distrust may also have facilitated the occurrence of oSRBR effects.notReviewedothe
Code for: A "front-row seat" to catastrophe: Testing the effect of immersive technologies on sympathy and pro-environmental behavior in the context of rising sea levels
For 63% of the world's population living farther than 100km (60 miles) from the coast, rising sea levels due to climate change represent a distal, abstract problem that might not appear to require urgent action. This poses a challenge to environmental educators seeking to foster pro-environmental responses. We tested if and how using immersive digital technologies like virtual reality (VR) can aid educators in overcoming this challenge.
Participants in our experiment (N = 146) viewed a report on how rising sea levels affect contemporary Fijians either in high immersive VR (360° video in a head-mounted display) or in low immersive VR (360° video on a traditional computer screen). Pro-environmental intentions did not differ between the experimental conditions. However, perceived presence, a sense of "being there", was higher in the high immersion condition than in the low immersion condition. Presence, in turn, correlated positively with pro-environmental intentions and sympathy but not problem awareness. This suggests that environmental education on rising sea levels aimed at promoting pro-environmental intentions might benefit from creating a heightened perception of presence.unknownunknow
