Sign Language Interpretation as a Deaf Support System in Seminar Classes (1): Identifying the needs of students with hearing impairment to improve their “quality of participation"
The main reasonable accommodation for students with hearing impairment is to convert audio information into other formats. The main method used in our university had been to convert spoken information into text by typing; however, in 2020, we began using sign language interpretation in seminar classes. This study reports on the process leading up to the decision to use sign language interpretation. A case study of a hearing-impaired student illustrates the importance of addressing the needs based on a careful assessment. To improve the “quality of participation,” it is important to provide a support system tailored to individual needs.

On the Special Topic "Study and Employment Support for Students with Diverse Needs Amid the Corona Pandemic"
Sapporo Gakuin University has been involved in supporting students with disabilities from a relatively early stage nationally. It is currently serving as a base school for the Japan Student Services Organizationʼs Learning Support Network for Students with Disabilities and providing consultations to students from other universities. It has also accumulated expertise in dealing with students with diverse needs, including those with developmental disabilities. However, it is a trial-and-error practice to deal with the Corona pandemic. This paper outlines recent initiatives and related practices and research implemented at the university to support learning, including in response to the pandemic.
