Climate Change Mitigation in Practice: Ecosystem Restoration Around Lake Singkarak, Sumatra

    Get PDF
An increasing important component of climate change mitigation is restoring degraded lands, while improving the economies of communities living in and around degraded forests. The national Low Emission Development Strategies (LEDS) in Indonesia have put ecosystem restoration and sustainable forest management (including social forestry) in degraded areas upfront.  In line with the Indonesian and global climate change policies, a Dutch-based social enterprise named CO2 Operate, has been running a Voluntary Carbon Mechanism (VCM) scheme in West Sumatra’s Singkarak Lake watershed since 2009. The scheme is entirely financed through private sector carbon offsetting. In close collaboration with the Provincial Forestry Department and local partners in education, the VCM scheme brings back tree cover to restore ecosystem functions on the degraded slopes of lake Singkarak. A combination of Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and tree planting brings both significant environmental and livelihood improvements. The ecological and cost effective approach allows for even the poorest farmers to join and improve their livelihoods. It brings back a forested landscape and its associated biodiversity within 5 years, while significant carbon sequestration above and below ground fits the low emission development of the Indonesian government to mitigate climate change

The Role of Geography in Understanding, Managing and Governing Disaster Related to Waste Management

    No full text
Geography has a long record of understanding, managing and governing disaster. The key element that connects geography and disaster is spatial distributions. Potential disasters and the physical and social impacts after any disaster events, can be described in spatial patterns. Many researches have shown that geography knowledge on spatial and scalar skills have been adopted and adapted in the processes of rescue, recovery and policy making of natural disaster around the world such as earthquake, landslide, forest fire and flooding. This paper seeks to elaborate a different perspective to the relation of geography and disaster. It intends to explain how geography is relevant and significant in the process of avoiding disaster related to new or man-induced disaster related to solid and hazardous waste management. Mapping skills and technology, as in GIS, has been adapted in siting the best location to build a solid waste landfill to avoid pollution, and the long-term and short-term disasters that it may bring. On the other hand, in managing transboundary hazardous waste, geography understanding of skills and scale has been useful in governing and decision making processes. The application of multiple level governance perspective in policy making as highlighted in this paper, stresses the complex web of interactions between state and non-state policy makers, which are operating at various levels of governance; indicating the significant of multidimensionality in policy making to avoid disaster due to hazardous material in e-waste.  &nbsp

Mesh-free Particle Method for Simulation of Earthquake-induced Slope Failure

    Get PDF
The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method for simulation of earthquake induced slope failure is presented. The SPH method was first invented for simulating dynamic behavior of compressive viscous fluid in the late 1970s and has been applied to other various problems in engineering field. So far the SPH method has been extended to handle not only fluid dynamics but also solid dynamics. The most advantage of the SPH method compared to other well established numerical method, such as the Finite Element Method, the Finite Discrete Method et al., is feasibility of analyzing discontinuity problem. This feature of the SPH method is desirable to earthquake induced slope failure simulation because slope failure phenomena posses discontinuity inherently. In this paper, the SPH method is adapted to simulate the earthquake induced slope failure. The SPH method can describe full dynamic behavior of a slope excited by earthquake and possible to predict the final configuration of slope after failure

Ecotourism as a Tool for Mangrove Conservation

    Get PDF
Intertidal mangrove forests cover much of the coastline of Southeast Asia, provide crucial ecosystem services to millions of people living in the coastal zone, and are some of the most biodiverse in the world. However, they are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the tropics due to land cover conversion to agriculture (rice, oil palm) and aquaculture. Several conservation tools have been suggested to reduce mangrove deforestation, with many recent tools based on financially valuing the mangrove ecosystem and using that money to incentivize habitat protection. An important set of ecosystem services that can potentially be paid for under some settings are cultural values, such as recreation, tourism, spiritual value and aesthetic value. Ecotourism potentially represents a set of sustainable tourism principles that utilize the cultural ecosystem services of habitats to provide income to tourism operators and local communities. While we don’t yet have a comprehensive and large-scale overview of the full extent of mangrove ecotourism activities in the region, numerous case studies suggest the importance of these activities in bringing mangroves and people together. However, ecotourism must be implemented correctly in order to minimize the adverse impacts of tourists on local habitats. These impacts can be physical, including increased shoreline erosion, noise and pollution, or social, including the exclusion of local tour operators and communities. We need to understand these impacts, and how to reduce them, if we want to better conserve mangrove forests using neoliberal approaches such as ecotourism
