elier, Accorder, Ouvrir, ces trois titres choisis pour la trilogie 
posthume de Guillevic, inaugurée en 2007, année du 
centenaire de sa naissance, semblent totalement correspondre à la vitalité 
du poète telle qu’elle nous apparaît. Présent, Guillevic est présent, dans 
cet infinitif présent qui témoigne de son action d’être en poésie. Ces titres 
font écho à « Gagner » paru en 1949, infinitif qui engage, dès les 
premiers livres, la cohérence de l’œuvre.  
 
Relier et Accorder reprennent des séries et des poèmes publiés en 
tirage limité, livres d’artistes ou poèmes du début de l’œuvre, des inédits 
aussi qui couvrent la période de 1933 à 1996. Le troisième volet de la 
trilogie ouvre pleinement sur la nécessité du poète à partager son vivre 
en poésie, à relier les artistes les uns aux autres, à accorder dans le sens 
même de l’union fraternelle et du poème les êtres vivants qu’ils soient 
poètes, peintres ou sculpteurs ou plus éloignés du monde de la poésie.

Ouvrir les portes de l’univers Guillevic ce n’est pas seulement 
lire et apprécier ses poèmes même si d’aucuns considèrent que l’œuvre 
est la meilleure révélatrice du sens. Pour avoir fréquenté assidument et 
passionnément cette œuvre, je peux assurer, que pour ma part, la 
connaissance de l’homme, de ses préoccupations, de son engagement, de 
ses plaisirs, de ses joies, de ses interrogations sont parts importantes dans 
l’approche de sa poésie.  Ouvrir  est donc un livre nécessaire qui montre 
les rapports du poète avec les autres arts, ses amitiés poétiques, ses 
collaborations avec les peintres, les musiciens, les sculpteurs d’où 
l’exergue choisie : Tous les arts doivent s’aider l’un, l’autre, dans 
l’appréhension du futur ». (Guillevic – décembre 1996) 
 
Le livre s’ouvre tout naturellement dans la complicité « Avec les 
poètes ». Nathan Katz le tout premier a accompagné le jeune Guillevic 
dans le monde de la poésie, suivi des poèmes « Pour saluer ses maîtres », 
Rimbaud, Supervielle, Corbières, Valéry, « Pour saluer ses frères », 
Michaux, Ponge, Adonis, Dib. Il salue aussi avec grande amitié quatre 
femmes en poésie, Francine Caron, Claudine Helft, Denise le Dantec et 
la rédactrice de ces lignes qui s’appelait alors Monique Welger. Adresses 
sous forme de poèmes, préfaces, lettres ou regard particulier, Guillevic 
se livre ici et nous livre aussi une connaissance de lui-même tout en nous 
éclairant par ses choix. Les différences subtiles se font entre 
« camarades » ou « grands amis » et Eluard occupe une place privilégiée 
dans le cœur du poète.   
La séquence « Avec Elsa Triolet » est d’autant plus intéressante 
qu’elle est mal connue. Ce sont les personnages de deux de ses romans 
qui ont inspiré Guillevic à écrire des poèmes-chansons, des 
chansonnettes dit-il, poèmes retravaillés avec Elsa. Des documents en fin 
de volume nous renseignent sur cette entente créative.  
 
« Avec les peintres » ouvre un chapitre important de la 
contribution de Guillevic avec ses amis peintres. Depuis « Elégie » et 
« Les Murs » avec Dubuffet jusqu’aux plus récents livres d’artistes en 
passant par Léger, Baltazar ou Pouperon,  Ouvrir  est un formidable

cadeau fait aux lecteurs de Guillevic qui ont maintenant la chance de déc-
ouvrir les poèmes de ces livres au tirage limité.  
 
La postface de Monique Chefdor est plus particulièrement 
consacrée à « L’œil de Guillevic », un œil qui voit les toiles des peintres 
avec un œil de poète, un œil qui réunit dans l’immédiateté du regard le 
mot et l’image., 
 
Ouvrir n’est pas un livre qui appelle à la lecture critique. Il est en 
soi le résultat (avec Relier et Accorder) d’une somme unique de création 
poétique, d’échanges entre artistes, de soutiens amicaux, de 
reconnaissance, de plaisir, il guide vers un approfondissement de 
l’œuvre, favorise un authentique creusement du corps poétique 
guillevicien offert par Lucie Albertini-Guillevic qui a réuni, choisi, 
orchestré ce travail important qui nous permet de mieux vivre le poème 
de ce grand poète.

equis is one of Guillevic’s major collection of poems, of personal, 
thematic and stylistic importance. On a personal level, it marks the 
period which ends the relationship with Marianne Auricoste and begins his life 
with Lucie Albertini.  Thematically, the volume is fragmented, touching on a 
myriad of earthly things and topics, typically Guillivician, but also engaging 
periodically in musings towards the planetary and starry spheres of the 
universe. However, the form and language of these poems constitute its most 
significant aspect. Guillevic continues to explore and develop here poetic traits 
initiated in Du Domaine, namely a haiku-like form which he calls quanta and 
a fundamental, minimalistic language devoid of figurative and descriptive 
elements.  The present translation, Summoned, captures admirably these formal 
and linguistic traits and communicates precisely the meaning of each quanta. 
On the other hand, the poetic quality of these fragments is even more elusive 
in English than in French, since the poetic in Requis is more a function of the 
non-said than the said, more of the white space than the written text.

Of special critical value is the Afterword by Lucie A. Guillevic, which 
generally explains the genesis of the volume and includes a number of 
manuscript pages of the poems. Particularly interesting is the reference to the 
original title given to this collection, Tohu-bohu, not retained because, 
apparently, there was another publication with this title. It must be noted, 
however, that “Tohu-bohu” is significant in that it reveals Guillevic’s intention 
to relate these poems to Rimbaud and specifically to the inebriated visions of 
his Bateau ivre. “Tohu-bohu” represents the bobbing, up and down thematic 
and spatial movement of his poems and, more importantly, the avant-garde 
nature of his poetic form, the quanta, totally modernistic. 
The two prefaces are equally interesting and useful in that they give 
context to Requis within Guillevic’s works, and explain the nature and method 
of the translating, as well as the overall significance of these poems. Stella 
Harvey reads into the text the poet’s attempt to structure some sort of 
cosmogony, such as the one represented by the illustration on the book-cover, 
and even to give expression to Einstein’s theory of relativity. Certainly there 
may be such intimations in these fragments, as in the ones identified in this 
preface. However, imposing such a structure on this text, betrays its intrinsic 
fragmented character and the austere, simple nature of its language, relatively 
speaking. If there is some kind of unifying element in this volume, it is the 
“blankness” or “starkness” of the expression and also its minimalistic “light” 
content. “Light”, so dominant in other Guillevic texts, is almost absent here. 
Indeed, using a phrase from a beautiful song from The Phantom of the Opera, 
one can say that Requis bathes in darkness and expresses Guillevic’s “music 
of the night”. 
It is quite difficult to relate the title of this volume, Requis, taken as an 
adjective or as a noun, to its fragmented sequence of poems. The translation of 
the title as Summoned communicates some kind of poetic imperative or the act 
of writing: the poet is “summoned” to fulfill a calling, at the same time personal 
and social. However, the word “Requis” carries also juristic semantics, 
designating as a noun the “defendant” and thus, possibly, expressing a call to 
defend one’s existence as “accused”, a theme not uncommon in Guillevic’s 
poetry. 
Similar translation projects of other texts by Guillevic should be 
encouraged. Not only do they expand readership of the poetry, but also and

perhaps more importantly, they contribute to our understanding of the text and 
to its critical appreciation.
