Get PDFThe narratives on the category of the “unwanted memory” of traumatic historical events present in Polish museums The article presents the problem of unwanted memory based on the analysis of narrative exhibitions, conducted in two Kraków museums – the Oskar Schindlerʼs Enamel Factory, which is a branch of The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, and the Home Army Museum. The Schindler’s Factory permanent exhibition Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939−1945 presents the fate of Kraków Jews and Poles under Nazi occupation during World War II, as well as the history of the manager and employees of the factory (during WWII bearing the name of Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik). The exhibition in the Home Army Museum presents the history of the Polish Underground State as an armed and ideological formation, and also the history of the Home Army and its named and unnamed soldiers. Both permanent exhibitions are part of a research area of unwanted memory, touching upon a subject which is very difficult for many types of customers, both individual and collective. This issue is still subject to analysis and has no precise definition or clearly defined research methodology. The recurring attempts to define the unwanted memory, in the opinion of the author of the article, are a great chance to create a dialogue between the parties in many current problematic discussions

Get PDFThe Postsecular Romanticism – the Case of ShelleyThe paper proposes to define the concept of postsecularity as some sort of interpretative tool to deal with historical phenomena related to the presence of religious ideas in modern literature. The subject of this postsecular hermeneutics is British Romanticism and in particular the work of Percy B. Shelley. It is the latter’s evolution from the attitude of materialistic atheism towards some appreciation of religious or spiritual dimension that the paper is focused on. This evolution leads Shelley – especially in Mont Blanc that I discuss here more closely – to a highly idiosyncratic and sceptical form of “negative theology.

Feature Selection and Classification Pairwise Combinations for High-dimensional Tumour Biomedical Datasets
Get PDFThis paper concerns classification of high-dimensional yet small sample size biomedical data and feature selection aimed at reducing dimensionality of the microarray data. The research presents a comparison of pairwise combinations of six classification strategies, including decision trees, logistic model trees, Bayes network, Na¨ıve Bayes, k-nearest neighbours and sequential minimal optimization algorithm for training support vector machines, as well as seven attribute selection methods: Correlation-based Feature Selection, chi-squared, information gain, gain ratio, symmetrical uncertainty, ReliefF and SVM-RFE (Support Vector Machine-Recursive Feature Elimination). In this paper, SVMRFE feature selection technique combined with SMO classifier has demonstrated its potential ability to accurately and efficiently classify both binary and multiclass high-dimensional sets of tumour specimens

In six parts of the book the authors of Unthinkable coincidence… point out nad investigate the most important issues present in the poetic work of the Nobel Prize laureate: the anthropological perspective, the unanthropocentric model of humanity and human condition, existential and metaphysical problems, philosophical contexts, irony, figures of memory, silence, uncertainty and helplessness, models of poetics and metrics of Szymborska’s poems. The last two parts of the volume focus on translations of Szymborska’s poems into English, Bulgarian, Czech and Slovak, on Szymborska’s translations of French baroque poets and on her images in Polish media form 1995 to 2012 and her posthumous traces in German newspapers. In the conclusion the reviewer describes the volume as the first really significant Polish collection of essays on Szymborska’s poetry since her death in 2012

Get PDFThe image of China in De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas suscepta, that is Jesuit vision of the Middle Kingdom in the seventeenth century.The first trustworthy and reliable image of the Far East was presented to the European readers by the missionaries who have been working in India, Japan, China and other Oriental countries in 16th–18th centuries. In the case of the Middle Kingdom it was the Society of Jesus that was sending there the most qualified and educated monks. They were using their mathematical or astronomical knowledge as a key to better understand and accept Chinese intellectual elite. This special interaction between a science and the Christian faith became a symbol of the Jesuits’ way of acting in China. As a result, the Jesuit missionaries presented the European science to Chinese and at the same time gained many important information about the Middle Kingdom. Their observations were presented to the European readers in their letters, relations and, above all, in the academic treatises presenting all the facts and miracles (“mirabilia”) of the Oriental world. Between them the most influential description of China during the first half of the 17th century was De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas suscepta (first edition in Latin – Augsburg 1615), written by Nicolas Trigault SI as a translation or augmented version of the Matteo Ricci’s journal. This picturesque description of the Middle Kingdom and the Jesuit mission to China provided European readers with more, better organized and more accurate information about China than has been ever available. The Author presents the figures of the major antagonists – General Horvath – general manager of the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER, built in the Chinese Manchuria under the contract between the Russo-Chinese Bank and China) and the Bolshevik Martemyan Ryutin who in 1917 attempted to overthrow General Horvath i. e. the legal authorities of the expropriated zone of the CER. This event was opposed by the Allies and the United States and the Chinese authorities, centrally as well as locally, and led to the forcible removal of the Bolsheviks from the zone of CER by the Chinese troops and was the first and the only successful example of foreign intervention against the Bolsheviks and their power

Get PDFBrief history of mangaSpeaking of Japanese culture, always brings strong associations with bushido codex of samurai, sushi cuisine, blossoming trees of cherry trees and historic clothing like kimonos. Many more can be mentioned, although there is one, the most visible aspect of their life – the presence of manga. Manga (jap. 漫画) nowadays well known around the globe is not so young as many of us believe. The history of the most famous comic books in the world started almost hundred years ago with first Japanese traditional images known as emaki (jap. 絵巻) literally translated as picture scrolls. After many centuries, the period of Edo (1603–1868) revealed new type of art: ukiyo-e (jap. 浮世絵). New technique of woodcut inspired many of artists. One of them, Katsushika Hokusai created The Great Wave off Kanagawa, famous of being the most popular Japanese art of all time. He, also as first man in the world, introduced the term Manga, which means flowing words. During years of historic changes, new kind of infl uence approached. Western foreigners started to discover sacred land of Japan, inspiring them to change old-fashioned lifestyle. European artists set new standards in art, causing caricatures cartoons to appear in local press, inspiring young generations of drawers. Post-war Japanese artist – Tezuka Osamu brought revolution to comic world, with first manga comics such as: Astro Boy (1952), Kimba the White Lion (1950) and Pheonix (1967). Many artists, inspired by Osamu’s work, started creating their own manga. Walt Disney’s technology of animations enabled to bring characters from Japanese comic books to move on screen. During 80’s first anime, as Japanese animations were called, were broadcasted. Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and Pokemon are only few titles that introduced world of manga and anime to the wider audience. Nowadays, young people each year create new artworks inspired by Japanese style of drawing. Nonetheless, manga and its long history, in large extent, popularized Japan among other countries

Get PDFParticipation of Japanese aircraft carriers in the Battle of Midway June 4–6, 1942: breaking the sea power of JapanThe Battle of Midway, according to the historiography of naval warfare, is considered as one of the most important events in the Pacific Ocean campaign. The Japanese Empire in order to implement their strategic plans used the most efforts and resources. The events that took place between 4 and 6 June 1942, contributed significantly to the decline in offensive capabilities of the Empire. The aircraft carriers involved in the battle were considered the best units of the Combined Fleet. Indecisiveness of commanders, with a total fiasco of intelligence operations, and too much fragmentation of forces directly contributed to the loss of all ships of the 1st and 2nd Aircraft Carriers Divisions. These units having a great potential and the best trained crews were supposed to tip the scales of victory in favor of Japan, but it did not happen. Severe loss of the stem of the fl eet has reduced considerably the perspectives of the expansive empire, but it did not mean an outright victory of the United States in this war. The campaign in the Pacific continued, but Japan until the end of the struggle did not manage to fully rebuild the military potential of its fleet
