Place of new art and architecture in the historic cultural space – “the right of good continuation”

    Get PDF
The necessity of remaining the authentic historic substance and also the traditional cultural climate obliges to analyze the extension of adaptation works in detail. It mainly refers to historic buildings of unique cultural and artistic values; however, it does not stand for a full limitation of intervention of modern architecture into the historic substance. Such a conclusion is drawn on the basis of an analysis of many European examples connected with the establishments of the Venice Charter from 1964 and subsequent supplementary additions, such as Nara Document 1994 and others

Numerical modelling of sub-glacial flow in a retention reservoir

    Get PDF
This paper deals with applying a numerical finite element model of water dynamics to sub-ice flow in a retention reservoir. On the basis of earlier experiences, the AdH model is chosen for this task. The previous usage of this model is outlined along with the physical basics used by this algorithm. The application procedure is then described and finally a few simulation results obtained for different conditions are shown. The results comparison and analysis indicate that the chosen model is capable of performing the required tasks

    Fixed points of α-nonexpansive mappings

    Get PDF
This paper is connected with the theory of a-nonexpansive mappings, which were introduced by K. Goebel and M. A. J. Pineda in 2007. These mappings are a natural generalisation of nonexpansive mappings from the point of view of the fixed point theory. In particular, they proved that in Banach spaces all α = (α1,..., αn) -nonexpansive mappings with α1 big enough, namely α1≥2 (1/1-n), have minimal displacement equal to zero. This paper introduces some new results connected with this problem

    Architectural games with history

    Get PDF
The text discusses architectural games related to the conservation of historic monuments. Two museum designs are presented connected by an innovative design approach despite being fifty years apart. Between 1957 and 1974, Carlo Scarpa began an architectural game with the museum building in Verona. In the twenty-first century Daniel Libeskind continues Scarpa’s unusual approach to design, but does so in an even bolder way, abandoning modernism and creating his own unique style

An analysis of the application of the Alden turbine ‒ a case study of the Dobczyce hydroelectric power plant

    Get PDF
This study contains an analysis of the Alden turbine with a power level of 5.0 MW in the Dobczyce power plant. Taking into account results of annalysis, it may be concluded that the contemplated use of the Alden turbine in the Dobczyce power plant is close to the limits of practical applicability and economic viability of this solution. The average annual energy output value achieved using the Kaplan turbines oscillates around 9 GWh, and if the turbines are replaced with an Alden turbine, the estimated average annual output may reach a maximum of 10.6 GWh which represents an increase in power output of about 17%

Simulation of the Single Bubble Ascent with OpenFOAM

    Get PDF
This project is motivated by the challenge of cleaning flat sheet membrane surfaces with the help of aeration. On the basis of earlier experiments and CFD simulations, a decision was made to use the CFD-tool OpenFOAM in contrast to earlier simulations which were performed with Ansys Fluent. In the new simulations, the advancing computing power allowed the simulation of a bubble ascent in the full channel which is of special interest in cases where the bubble size is smaller than the channel depths. Besides saving the licensing cost, OpenFOAM allows access to the source code and, therefore, easier implementation of sub-models if necessary

Hybrid Heating and Cooling System with Renewable Energy Sources

    Get PDF
This paper presents hybrid heating and cooling system with four heating devices, three of which are producing heat from renewable energy sources. The systems operate in real conditions in residential and commercial building near Cracow. Geothermal heat pumps have an additional working mode that can be used for passive cooling during summertime for the cooling of building interiors. Results from several years of installation operation with a particular emphasis upon performance, the consumption of electricity, and the amount of heating and cooling production achieved by the individual devices have been presented

Climatic aspects of durability in contemporary architecture

    Get PDF
Buildings maintain their original shape for some time after their completion. Thereafter, they begin to deteriorate gradually. Their technical and aesthetical longevity is diverse and depends on many acting factors. First of all, the rules of building art should be obeyed while designing and constructing as well as the selection of adequate building materials is necessary. A very important factor, which determines their durability, is the local climate. The most adverse climatic conditions for buildings are in the coastal localities. One can perceive there best the impact of particular climatic factors on accelerated deterioration of building structures, as opposed to other more advantageous geographical situations. The paper presents the results of observations in situ and the analysis of technical and aesthetical condition of selected buildings in some cities in the Netherlands and Spain, with the aim of elucidating the reasons of their aesthetical and technical deterioration

    Inspiration or fascination

    Get PDF
The essay discusses the issues related to the phenomenon of inspiration in the process of creating architectural forms. The sources of such inspiration are particularly evident during the process of developing temporary architecture, or architecture which does not have a clear function, or in fact none at all, being more of a sculpture than a building. Structures of this type usually reflect the idea behind them in the most vivid manner – the idea that first settled in the mind of its creator

Energy savings by application of supercapacitor storage in trolleybus supplying station – analysis of experimental results

    Get PDF
In 2011–2013, stationary supercapacitor storage developed by the Electrotechnical Institute in Warsaw was put into trial operation in the trolleybus substation “Północna” (North) located in Gdynia. The article presents the results recorded during supercapacitor storage operation and discusses the impact of the storage on energy consumption savings. Guidelines for selecting a location for stationary supercapacitor storage were carried out based on exploitation experience
