At the confluence of art nouveau and ecclectic early modernism in Riga’s metropolitan architecture
The aim of this paper was to draw attention to the coincidence of streets intersections ending, in general, in corner buildings making up typical and picturesque parts of the townscape of the 19th c. European cities, including the central quarter of Riga. This type of town-planning establishments perfectly compose with the art and aesthetics of Art Nouveau in Riga. An additional and very important component of the townplanning- architectonic solutions is the decorative finial of the corner houses (not only in Jugendstil, but also the Latvian national romanticism) creating a harmonious composition in respect of art and town-planning, ideally completing the townscape of this Baltic metropolis
Young’s Modulus test in two directions on the basis of eigenfrequencies in concrete beams
This paper covers the experimental studies of Young’s modulus of concrete on the basis of eigenfrequencies. Experiments were performed on beam elements measuring 1050 × 200 × 100 mm, using operational modal analysis (OMA). Two types of concrete with different mixtures were tested. The dynamic Young’s modules were calculated on the basis on the resonant frequencies measured in two directions. The values obtained were compared with static Young’s modules determined on concrete cylinders in axial compression testing
An Evaluation of the Changes to the Mechanical Properties of Polymer Biocomposites Resulting from their Long-Term Storage at Low Temperatures
This paper presents an analysis of the properties of biocomposites that were stored for four years in the refrigerator at 6°C and were investigated for detailed information of mechanical properties like tensile strength and bending. The study was based on test results obtained in 2011. Comparison of changes in the structure of composite materials was carried out an analysis of SEM image. The game and play at architects in the example of Polish feature films from the 1960s
The goal of this paper, in relation to the conference topic, is to show how a female architect was shown in movies from 1960s. The author presents this in two views of the life of women architects: passive – set in the realization of everyday career goals, and creative – set in creating the architecture of the future. He also emphasizes that, in retrospect, the creative attitudes of presented movie heroines are an excellent record of the times, when being a female architect was associated with the choice in the career path of little creative engagement on behalf of creative activity that could not achieve results because of the social reluctance in the time of the Polish People’s R epublic (PRL)
Antonio Gaudi’s works of architecture in the aspect of chosen geometrical surfaces
The article presents the systematics of various types of geometrical surfaces in the aspects of their occurrence in Gaudi’s architecture. Basic groups of surfaces were characterized, focusing on those typical for the architect. The aim of the analysis of three-dimensional forms is the knowledge of geometrical shapes that form a work of architecture. It can facilitate the understanding of construction of the body and familiarize the concept of the project. On the basis of abovementioned systematics examples of buildings are presented, in which Gaudi used particular surfaces. Causes and results of usage of such spatial solutions in structural and aesthetic aspects are discussed. The article includes buildings designed by Gaudi in Barcelona and Colonia Guell

Architectural games and play with form, or on the pursuit of pretexts to shape things
While shaping things, architects frequently seek pretexts in the world of art, to justify the originality of the accepted solutions. Such pretexts are also spatial games and play with the form of the object devised by architects. They are based on rules and guidelines, which have a direct impact on the idea, composition or implementation plan of the designed facility. Architectural games and play are also repeatedly used in the process of educating future architects
Local pressure loss coefficient during the flow of slurry ice trough sudden pipe expansions
The paper presents the results of experimental studies on ice slurry flow resistance in sudden pipe expansions. In the experimental studies, the mass fraction of solid particles in the slurry ranged from 5 to 30%. The pressure loss coefficients identified as a result of the experimental studies of the turbulent flow of the ice slurry are the same as the coefficients calculated for Newtonian liquids
Modeling of gas flow through valve (CRV)
The aim of this work is to calculate the effective area of a compressor recirculation valve. Analytical solution and numerical modeling for compressible flow through a valve will be presented. Critical parameters of flow will be determined. Numerical modeling will be performed using ANSYS FLUENT. The results of the numerical solution will be compared with the analytical solutions
Beta-adrenergic drugs (β-blockers) in the environment ‒ new methods of removal
This paper is part of a series of publications discussing the prevalence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment and the effectiveness of their removal and degradation during wastewater and water treatment processes. It presents the most commonly used b-blockers and their parameters related to their metabolism and excretion from a body. In the paper, the authors review the literature data on the presence of b-blockers in wastewater and surface waters and present new solutions which have been developed to increase the efficiency of removal of these compounds from wastewater and potable water
