The magic of shadow in fun with architecture
Light is at its best in the presence of darkness. Information about the object illuminated by the light is conveyed by two kinds of shadows, its own and those cast. Shadows come into play with architecture in the form of chiaroscuro created by a solid object or some other additional elements constructed especially for this purpose. The cast shadow, which is very susceptible to deformation, can also be used to create some fun projections on surfaces
Innocent games unexpected plays
The game is never innocent. N either is architecture. Their innocence is rather that of a weapon. The device is power. G ame and architecture, both retain a strict relationship with the rules (of the game, of the architecture); they are generators of the happening, of openings and uncertainties, of possible (un)expected multiplications. Architecture as a game refers to the life of a work after design and construction, to the ability to be a tool that welcomes life. I t is a way of designing open architectures which recycle the rules (and the memory) by presenting them with the apparent innocence of children’splay, poised between the rationally fragile and the relationally shy. The topic is expressed through design experimentation on architectures and infrastructures of war that constitute a complex system of visible and invisible elements, palimpsests on the move of both present traces and cancellations. The project suggests a new narration of the E astern military border through the superimposition of heterogeneous contemporary strata. The void of the urban margin constitutes the context for trying to live by playing, by recycling the in between space that counterpoints invisible military fronts and so on
The determination of non-standard seepage parameter values based on standard parameter values
The estimated characteristics of water seepage in a the vadose zone have been determined using analytical formulae based on the Carman-Kozeny capillary beam model. Only two standard soil parameters are needed to achieve this objective: hydraulic conductivity and porosity. The characteristics obtained find their application in a simplified description of infiltration known as the piston model

Unmanned floating research vehicle for bathymetric measurements
Unmanned water vehicles have been routinely used for marine purposes. This technology has emerged only recently for inland waters. It is used for two main purposes: bottom area scanning, in order to create maps of bottoms of rivers and lakes, artificial or natural. This information is needed for water engineering development and rehabilitation projects, and for flood protection planning. The other use is for the determination of flow velocities in rivers and lakes, which is needed for the determination of hydraulic properties of rivers, also necessary for flood protection. For the first purpose, an original vehicle is shortly described (UPP-1E), for the other, a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf solution is presented (RiverSurveyor of SonTek)
Mobile Pilot-Plant for the Evaluation of Novel Scrubbing Liquids for the Absorption of CO2 from Industrial Gases
Most available scrubbing liquids suffer from either high heating duties for the regeneration or vulnerability towards gas components. In order to increase the efficiency of the absorption process a novel scrubbing liquid has been developed by thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. For verifying relevance and feasibility of long-term operation of the new fluid assumptions for installation were created – conceptual design and detailed simulation of the process without detailed thermodynamic information

The aim of the essay is to remind people of selected realizations done during the last two decades of the 20th c. targeted at the rescue, restoration and enlivening objects of the 19th c. architecture. They were created in the period of industrial revolution, when the turn of the century became the past, remaining a valuable relic of the past and serves new aims, cultivating both old-time and restored functional, aesthetic and artistic values
A single-phase slotless axial-flux low-power generator with ferrite magnets
The design and development of an axial-flux ferrite magnet slotless generator for use in a small-scale wind turbine is described. The 4/4-pole single-phase machine is designed for simplicity and ease of manufacture and it consists of one slotless stator disc. The generator produces approx. 12 W at 1000 rpm with electrical efficiency of up to 46%. Because the efficiency of the machine is important, the power curve characteristics and voltage produced by the generator are investigated. The presented generator should generate sufficient output DC voltage to charge 4 to 5 batteries of 12 volt each. Finally, the finite element (FE) results are compared with measurements on a prototype. The calculated values coincide to a strong degree with the experimental results
Introduction to numerical modeling of electromagnetic wave field on the example of georadar data recorded in river dike
Selected result of GPR surveys, which were carried out on the dike of the Vistula River, three days after the flood in 2010, was presented in the paper. Radargram was processed in a standard way, which allowed 2D visualization of main loose zones in the examined dike. Theoretical background of numerical modelling of electromagnetic wave field in the geological medium was presented in the paper. The results of numerical modelling were used for the evaluation of water and air saturation of loose zones during radargram interpretations
Synthesis of controller for railway – level crossing devices using Petri nets and state machine
The design of modern digital measurement-control systems applied in such fields as nuclear and power, chemical, air and rail transport as well as military requires a special approach to the philosophy of design, manufacture and the use of such systems. Therefore, attention should be focused on safeguarding the required level of reliability and safety of working conditions of such systems. On an example of a controller for an automatic railway crossing devices is presented synthesis of this controller.
