Coccolithophores in Polar Waters: Papposphaera sagittifera HET and HOL Revisited

    Get PDF
The re-examination of the lightly calcified Arctic coccolithophore species, Papposphaera sagittifera, has some inherent challenges due to the research history on this taxon. It is thus obvious in retrospect that the species description based on just a single specimen does not adequately account for the true identity of this taxon. Today we are aware of the existence of at least three species of Papposphaera that have basically the same calyx design while being differentiated based on patterns of central area calcification. In order to remedy this we emend here the description of P. sagittifera and provide an epitype for the species. When realizing that species pairs of Papposphaera and Turrisphaera share a life history, the new combination, P. borealis, was established to accommodate P. sagittifera and T. borealis. However, it turns out that ‘sagittifera’ is in fact the senior epithet by a few months, which means that the correct name for the species is P. sagittifera with T. borealis added as a synonym. While the P. sagittifera HET and HOL morphological variability across Arctic sites clearly leaves the impression of a single, fairly well defined species, the situation is different with respect to the occurrence of P. sagittifera in Antarctic waters. While there are obvious similarities between P. sagittifera HET across the Polar Regions there are also subtle differences, and most importantly it has been found that the Antarctic P. sagittifera shares a life history with a species of Turrisphaera that is markedly different from T. borealis. While awaiting molecular evidence the Antarctic material is tentatively referred to as P. sagittifera cfr

Psammophaga fuegia sp. nov., a New Monothalamid Foraminifera from the Beagle Channel, South America

    Get PDF
Psammophaga fuegiais a new monothalamid foraminifera discovered in surface sediment samples in the Beagle Channel, South America. The species is a member of the important, globally distributed genus Psammophaga, which has the ability to ingest and store mineral particles inside the cytoplasm. Its shape is ovoid to pyriform, the size varies from 250 to 600 µm in length and from 200 to 400 µm in width. Like other Psammophaga species P. fuegia has a single aperture. It was found in multiple samples across the Beagle Channel area at water depths of 4 to 220 meters and in environments as variable as fjords, the main channel, and the harbour of Puerto Williams (Chile). The occurrences of the new species in environmental DNA and RNA samples correspond well to its distribution inferred from the microscopic study

How much does culture matter in organizational learning in municipalities

    No full text
Background. Culture as the sole of each organization is examined itself or in different management concepts. Many studies identify culture as a main dimension in the organizational learning process or in learning organizations, both in the private and public sector. However there is a lack of research focusing on municipalities, especially in transformed countries. Ongoing changes in the task of imposed by the government as well as those resulting from the European grants cause needs for appropriate culture which is one learning organization dimensions in the light of theory. Research aims. This paper explores which variables shaping organizational culture are important for the local municipalities in relation to their scope and to propose their consistent typology for the state of art in research in the example of a transformed country. Methods. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 670 municipalities, with response rate of 26,7% of total population. The questionnaire was filled in by one official from each municipality, who takes one of the following position: mayor, deputy mayor or municipality secretary. Key findings. The analysed research results clearly demonstrate that the level of culture in the rural municipalities is higher than in the urban rural municipalities and urban municipalities. It could be observed, inter alia, that high-rang officials (head of division or mayor) tend to be afraid to talk about their mistakes and there is hardly any atmosphere for constructive remarks

Investment and innovation priorities of meat factories in the Podkarpacie Province

    No full text
The transformation of the Polish economy has changed the situation of companies dramatically and the opening of borders to foreign entities and products has caused fundamental changes on both domestic and foreign markets. Innovativeness of the European Union member states is one of the most important factors which will be determining the competitiveness of economy and companies of the agribusiness sector in the forthcoming years. In the last two decades the level of competition between the functioning companies of the meat industry has increased significantly and globalization of the market has changed the rules of its functioning. The article provides verification of investment and innovation priorities of meat factories in the Podkarpacie Province within the last three years. It exemplifies their local implementation and making use of them in the balanced development of the region. It has been stated that the most important strategic priorities of companies are the improvement of profitability and the quality of products, the increase in competitiveness, widening the range of products, adapting production methods to the requirements of the European Union and environmental protection, reducing production costs and the increase of market share. In order to improve the competitiveness it was judged necessary to create the rules of functioning for the regional system of innovation

3D computer modelling of architectural details based on the modern BIM inventory systems

    Get PDF
The article presents the 3D computer modelling of architectural details based on the modern BIM inventory systems. It discusses the methodology of architectural inventory, which employs laser measurements in the ArchiCad programme interconnected with the FlexiJet system. The use of this method allows one to create elements of a virtual building (BIM model) with great precision, thanks to its very high measurement accuracy and appropriate software. The application of this system is exemplified by the specified elevation detail of the Royal Palace in Łobzów, currently housing the Faculty of Architecture of Cracow University of Technology

Managment of hazardous trees in heritage areas

    Get PDF
Trees growing on heritage terrains or in the vicinity of natural landmarks can be subject to hazard and also they themselves can become a hazard to people and their property. Nevertheless, considering the trees’ high environmental and heritage values the decision of their removal should be a measure of finality. A major role in preserving hazardous trees with simultaneous improvement of the safety of users is conducted by risk management preservation planning. This paper aims to outline the steps for minimizing the safety risks and the steps for preserving hazardous trees. It further explains how these measures can be used in management of large clusters of trees on heritage terrains, and presents advantages and disadvantages of the WID method by PhD. Rosłon-Szeryńska (2006) in routine tree management

Application of the active ir thermography for the detecion of non-uniformity of materials in building partitions

    Get PDF
The paper describes the problem of building envelope investigation with active thermography. Mainly emphasized is its application to detect different material of wall inclusions. Examples of active thermography application and description of experimental investigation has been shown on a model envelope, with inclusion of significantly different thermal conductivity and heat capacity materials; XPS polystyrene, steel and granite. Thermograms received for every kind of inclusion have been compared and analyzed. Finally, the summary and conclusion have been shown along with the prospects of development and practical application of this kind of investigation in construction

Eerror analysis in mathematical model of electromechanical actuator using Hamiltonian equations

    No full text
This paper presents a methodology of error analysis in a mathematical model of an electromechanical actuator using Hamiltonian equations in the description of energy conversion. As the basic quantity in numerical algorithms, the coenergy of magnetic field Ecm is employed. The reason for the application of coenergy as a state function is the explicitness of its value for a given set of state variables, resulting from neglecting eddy currents and hysteresis phenomenon in the model

Modern solutions for presentation of lost urban heritage in the public city space exemplified by Kraków between 1985 and 2015

    Get PDF
The article shows, on the basis of selected examples, modern activities aimed at presentation, in the public space of Kraków, of lost elements of urban heritage. It discusses the manners of commemorating and making historical urban forms legible (layout of streets and squares, development, defence structures, watercourses), which were liquidated and whose reconstruction is not planned. Five methods of activities were distinguished and discussed: 1. Placement of visual or tactile information; 2. Application of specific surfaces and elements of landscape architecture; 3. Introduction of specific solutions in designs of new buildings erected in the historical structure of the city; 4. Establishment of a generally accessible or partially accessible reserve; 5. Application of specific local names. The conducted analysis indicates that application of various methods is a beneficial phenomenon: it enriches the public space of a city, allows the society to become acquainted with lost heritage and provides the designers with possibilities of artistic creation in specific conditions
