An assessment of the Cracow landscape from the level of the Vistula river with the use of the urban riverside landscape valuation model
The objective of this article is to present the results of a Cracow landscape valuation from the level of the Vistula river. The paper presents and verifies the urban riverside landscape valuation model based upon five classification functions. The study covers a thirty-kilometre section of the Vistula river within the administrative boundaries of Cracow. 144 valuation points were designated at which the landscape was assessed based upon eight parameters. The presented results indicate the dynamics of the Cracow Vistula river landscape value and allow the assessment of application possibilities of the model developed for the landscape of Wrocław
The morasko estate – an example of historic value degradation caused by ownership changes and plot dismemberment
The historic estate in Morasko has been the subject of transformation for years. Both owners as well as functions have been changing. New plots, existing after estate plot dismemberment, were covered with new buildings, which dominated both the manor and palace and changed the historic spatial design as well. The aims of the study were: to identify the threats rising from plot dismemberment and ownership changes, to determine the scale of historic value destruction and to determine the revalorization possibility. The achievement of those goals was possible after research and analytical methods were used. The applied methods allowed for the creation of scientific analysis and 3D models. Despite the fact that Morasko estate historic value is remarkably destroyed it is still suitable for partial restitution
An experimental and theoretical study of deflections of BFRP RC beams
Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars are a new material used in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. They present such properties as high tensile strength, low modulus of elasticity and shear strength. Due to these mechanical properties, flexural behavior of BFRP RC elements is significantly different to that of traditional steel RC. This paper presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the short-term flexural behaviour of a series of simply supported BFRP RC beams. The beams were tested under four-point bending. The main objective of this paper was to investigate deflections of the beams depending on reinforcement ratio. The results of experiments were compared with code formulations and prediction models
Using concavity index for manufacturing feature recognition
The paper presents the usage of the concavity index for the effective recognition of the concave, open manufacturing features like open pockets, through slots and steps. The determination of this index using B-Rep representation is presented in detail. This is a fragment of an algorithm for the recognition of manufacturing features defined in the STEP-NC standard
Strategy of placemaking – an essay on Seattle architecture
The following article concerns planning policy in Seattle, whose important element is the strategy of placemaking. Place-oriented thinking is expressed with a polycentric understanding of city space (as a sum of places), but also an organic view of all of the city’s components: architecture, history, natural and cultural environment. Development of this strategy (topics of projects, methods of projecting, public involvement) is described by an outline of the history of city planning and chosen examples of contemporary urban projects in terms of public space (parks, museums, a library)

Hybrid Heating and Cooling System with Renewable Energy Sources
This paper presents hybrid heating and cooling system with four heating devices, three of which are producing heat from renewable energy sources. The systems operate in real conditions in residential and commercial building near Cracow. Geothermal heat pumps have an additional working mode that can be used for passive cooling during summertime for the cooling of building interiors. Results from several years of installation operation with a particular emphasis upon performance, the consumption of electricity, and the amount of heating and cooling production achieved by the individual devices have been presented
The interwar spa resort Wisła – the degree of cultural environment preservation
The aim of the article is to present and highlight the cultural heritage of Wisła as an example of an interwar spa resort designed from scratch, which in the contemporary times has been to a large extent destroyed. The urban principles and the construction projects realized in result of the regulation plans of the 20s and 30s of the 20th century created a coherent concept of the town’s growth based on spatial order and harmony with the natural environment, a concept which was consistently executed. The Author emphasizes that at present, owing to erroneous planning decisions, the proportions between the developed areas and the natural environment have been distorted, and the stylistic uniformity of buildings has been disfigured in the process of their modernization
The role of cities in the development of rural areas
The article is a polemic with the doctrine of multifunctional rural areas development (WROW) in Poland. This doctrine is supported by many scientists and politicians but it lacks reflection on its impact on spatial planning. It is a denial of the logic of the settlement process according to which the rural population leaving the employment in agriculture sector should be given the chance to choose the city as a place of residence
Mathematische Kränzchen in Prag – a forgotten German Mathematical Society
The most important and interesting phenomena from the history of the association Mathematische Kränzchen in Prag (the Prague German Mathematics Community), which operated in Prague between spring 1913 and spring 1934, will be introduced, on the basis of the study of surviving archive sources available in Czech country and abroad, original professional journals mathematical works, and diverse secondary literature. We will try to clarify the position of the German mathematical community in the Czech lands, respectively in Central Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. We will try to capture its specifics resulting from the Prague genius loci, to describe its contributions to the development of science, to indicate its links to the surrounding German scientific world and to show its relations with Czech and foreign professional associations and societies
