Modeling of heat flow through multilayer internal supports of cryogenic vessels

    Get PDF
The article presents the issue of heat flow through internal supports of double-walled cryogenic vessels. The influence of the thermal resistance at the contact plane between supports and vessel materials is discussed. A simulation of heat flow through the support multilayer made of plastic is presented. The simulation takes into account the influence of temperature and local contact pressure on the thermal resistance

Climatic wind tunnel for wind engineering tasks

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a new climatic wind tunnel laboratory, which is one of the laboratories of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ITAM ) of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic. The tunnel is used for fundamental research in civil engineering, architecture, and heritage care and in other fields where wind effects appear along with other factors. The paper includes essential information about the interior layout of the tunnel, descriptions of the principal parts of the tunnel which were designed taking into account both the optimal flow characteristics together with the description of some facilities serving for the simulation of a strong wind, rain, freeze and heat radiation, and the modelling of the atmospheric boundary layer. A design for a rectangular contraction nozzle, based on a parabolic profile and extending the capacity of the wind tunnel is presented

A comfort comparison of a foam seat against a seat with an auxetic spring skeleton

    Get PDF
This paper presents a comfort analysis of two different office chair types. The first is made of foam and the second is comprised of auxetic springs with foam upholstery. Several steps of quasi-static loads are chosen for comfort analysis in order to assess the dependence of measures of comfort on the mechanical properties of the applied structural solutions. Numerical analysis is performed by means of ABAQUS software – this allows the comparison and selection of optimal structures with respect to comfort requirements

    Playing with meanings

    Get PDF
Meaning is an element of form wherever it manifests itself as an aesthetic aspect. Playing with symbols and allegories and the game of intentions and inspirations is an intrinsic element of art, so also of architecture which, too, needs meaning to become a valuable cultural element in the surroundings and a quality mark of perceptible form. Two interpretations: that of the author and of the observer seem to be its most prominent indicator

Playing “hide and seek” or penetrating architecture

    Get PDF
Creating a relationship between space and the matter of a work of art has resulted in the fact that the relationships between the exterior and the interior are more important than ever before during the development of modern architecture. Together with the modernist revolution, the engagement of creators in surpassing the threshold of the visible exterior to enter the purely internal plane became the basis for the most radical manifestation of freedom and everything that is connected with defining the new architecture

Drawing as an element of architectural education of the youngest

    Get PDF
The architectural drawing is a permanent part of the architect’s work – it is a bridge between vision and its realization. It cannot be clearly classified. It can be either a medium conveying information, as well as an end in itself and there are many opportunities to use its potential. This article attempts to answer the question of whether drawing can support architectural education of young children (3‒6). This period is very important for the development of a human being. Skillfully stimulated curiosity of a child allows to expand the possibilities of perception, which may lead to increased sensitivity to the shape and quality of the space

The park in St. Yuri (st. George) Square – the jewel in the emerald necklace of the city of Lviv

    Get PDF
The most valuable parks in Lviv were designed by the famous city gardener Arnold Röhring, who managed to combine in the art of landscape design the different styles of the turn of 20th century. If the large parks of the city are under state protection, the smaller ones designed as public gardens, boulevards, gardens near the villas are constantly being rebuilt and destroyed. The results of the study of the park in St. Yuri Square in Lviv give grounds for considering this park an authentic monument of landscape art of the end of the 19th century, where its compositional structure and state of rare old-growth species of trees and shrubs are well preserved

Simulation of the Single Bubble Ascent with OpenFOAM

    Get PDF
This project is motivated by the challenge of cleaning flat sheet membrane surfaces with the help of aeration. On the basis of earlier experiments and CFD simulations, a decision was made to use the CFD-tool OpenFOAM in contrast to earlier simulations which were performed with Ansys Fluent. In the new simulations, the advancing computing power allowed the simulation of a bubble ascent in the full channel which is of special interest in cases where the bubble size is smaller than the channel depths. Besides saving the licensing cost, OpenFOAM allows access to the source code and, therefore, easier implementation of sub-models if necessary

Issues of identity and identification in the protection of the multicultural architectural heritage in selected spas in the Hutsul region

    Get PDF
The spa towns situated in the valley of the river Prut in the Hutsul region preserved a little-known but extremely interesting set of historical urban and architectural layouts dating back to the first half of the previous century. Considering the progressing destruction of the multicultural landscape of this region, the need to identify and register them is becoming urgent. Neither the historical architectural objects nor their immediate surrounding are covered by any form of institutional protection. Very often the inhabitants did not identify with the region and they lost their sense of their identity It seems necessary to create legal provisions for their protection and to establish guiding principles for the process of their restoration

Brzeźno – forgotten watering place of Trójmiasto

    Get PDF
For more than 150 years, Brzeźno was a popular and frequented seaside resort with characteristic development, characteritic of what? You need to specify this or use a different adjective extensive, well cared-for park and a grand pier, yet the place was able to retain an intimate climate. The history of the resort started around the middle of the 19th century, when spa objects and facilities were built next to the medieval fishing hamlet. The place, which later became a seaside district of Gdańsk, had its heyday in the first half of the last century. In the post-war years, Brzeźno fell into decline, lost its historic development, former infrastructure, character and significance; although it was not completely forgotten, it played the role of a residential district. The beginning of the present century brings the commencement of the revitalization process of the partly preserved fragments of the former spa, which may signify a new era in the development of the former spa resort. Brzeźno’s asset is still its location at the seaside, traces of its historic identity and close connections with Gdańsk. Using the potential of the place and restoring it to its former function will be possible if the actions undertaken at present are not limited to the fragmentary revitalization of some elements of the complex, but also provide for the introduction of a diverse functional programme and harmonious spatial growth, including reconstruction of the atmosphere of the old Brzeźno
